I'll repost my question from earlier since it got missed out in all the excitement. Maybe some of you can help.

A question for you metaller's- Judging by the tracks & album results so far, there appears to be lots and lots of sub-genres sub-sub-genres and micro-genres. Metal appears to be even more splintered than say, indie or even electronica/dance music. is that the case? I'm told that this list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_subgenres is not even definitive. Why is metal more open to a cross pollination of other genres? It looks as though it's always evolving. Anything I hear now sounds completely different to what I heard in the 90s, or the 80s and 70s metal I've heard (while a lot of indie music is stuck in the 60s, at least here in England), even commercially, yet older genres are still going strong too. Is the famous elitism part of this as when a band or genre gets popular, they all get into another one to remain cool? or is it just a progressive genre where boundaries are always broken?( a bit like pop music absorbing everything and anything).

paula (Minnie The Minx), Saturday, 7 August 2010 03:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm no metaller, Paula, so I can't help - I just wanted to let you know that I did read your question and wondered that too.

Ian Christe writes about a lot of genres in Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal, but I'm not sure if he directly addresses the question of why so many sub-genres. It seems to me it's a healthy sign of metal's enduring popularity. The sub-genres seem mostly fan driven. Many fans don't dabble, they obsessively see all their favorites live, wear the t-shirts, buy all the albums, and live the life. And often form their own band. For every new variation a single band might create or stumble upon, there are fans that might follow through with their own band. A good example would be Lars Ulrich. A budding pro tennis player who became an obsessive metal fan who bought imports, haunted record swaps, participated in fanzine culture, flew to the UK to see his favorite band Diamond Head and ended up living with them for a bit before going back to work on his own band.

There was like 30+ more voters in the albums poll rather than the tracks poll, plus a few who voted in the tracks poll didn't submit a ballot. So not surprisingly results might be a bit different. So expect some surprises, left outs, too lows, wtfs and lots of GREAT albums.
