"Lettre à Monsieur le chef de gare" is one of my favourite songs ever.

If I got rich and started a vanity reissue label Comme a la Radio would be project #1.

I was gonna say, don't know much about her but that record (Comme a la Radio) with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago is one of the best things ever.

I've recently pulled out all my Fontaine & Areski - all of it is amazing.I found an Areski record, Un Beau Matin, that is equally fantastic. About half the songs are credited to Fontaine/Areski and I hear her vocalizations throughout the record tho Areski takes the driver's seat on the record. I need to own copies of Vous et Nous and Le Bonheur...

I've just discovered BF via Comme A La Radio. This is seriously cool and weird and deserves more recognition. Jai 26 Ans is a fave at the moment.

I looks like Comme A La Radio is getting a reissue;http://www.superiorviaduct.com/products/brigitte-fontaine-comme-a-la-radio-lp
And she's released an album this year. Thanks for bumping the thread, I will investigate further. Definitely worth seeing live, based on when I saw a few years back.

I = It
she's got such an interesting voice, it wavers between extreme confidence and just-about-to-crack. there's something just slightly unsettling about the way she sings.

wow Superior Viaduct continues to amaze, great news xxp
― sleeve, Thursday, 21 November 2013 16:30 (ten years ago) link
aw shit it doesn't have my favorite track! apparently 'Le Goudron" is a CD-only bonus track on the older versions :(
― sleeve, Thursday, 21 November 2013 16:32 (ten years ago) link
It is??? That's my fave on 'Comme' too.
'Est' is a fantastically fruity record and well worth investigating too. Bought one of the early 70s ones w Areski and wasn't that into it.
― mr.raffles, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:40 (ten years ago) link
'Vous et Nous', mentioned upthread a couple of times, is quite good, though I don't think anything quite tops 'Comme'
― rob, Thursday, 21 November 2013 19:49 (ten years ago) link
Love Brigitte, have listened to pretty much every album she's done. I'd say her self-titled album might be her best album besides "Comme," although all her 70s albums are scattered with great tracks.
― Michael F Gill, Thursday, 21 November 2013 23:22 (ten years ago) link
if you're looking for le goudron on vinyl, it can be found on the bearded ladies comp finders keepers put out. not sure when or where the bonus track that was added to the cd i have of her first record comes from, but it's completely out of place with the rest of the album. how are her recordings with jacques higelin that have been (re)released lately? quite like the higelin/areski record too!
― no lime tangier, Friday, 22 November 2013 21:31 (ten years ago) link
sweet, thanks so much for that reference! I have been on a big LITA kick lately anyway.

Been listening to Comme a la Radio all week. Not sure what's being sing about but am enjoying the lp.
I'm not familiar with any of the rest of her work so wonder if there's anything to progress to. Did Superior Viaduct do any of the other titles than the 1st 2? Or are they planning to?
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 22:22 (nine years ago) link
Comme a la radio is more avant-jazzy than all the rest of her records, due to it being a collaboration with Art Ensemble of Chicago. Most of the rest of her more is (freak?) folky, with a lot of duets with Areski.
Her self-titled record is excellent, has some lush orchestral pieces as well as some short acapella bursts that I wished she explored more. Vous Et Nous is also great, although slightly long-winded as a double album. I would say all her 70s records have worthwhile things to offer.
― Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 23:49 (nine years ago) link
the arrangements on her debut are by jean-claude vannier, i think? vous et nous is one i've always wanted to check out but never been able to find. her self-titled album from the early seventies is a favourite of mine, also have a soft spot for l'incendie, one of the fontaine/areski albums: definitely the most "folk" one that i've heard.
― no lime tangier, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 00:56 (nine years ago) link
I love 'Vous et Nous' - very sprawling indeed but despite the variety (some folk stuff, some Oud/arabic Areski jams, even some proto-electro stuff) all the songs capture a kind of floating eeriness that's really poetic. Her new stuff ain't bad either
