um deej, take it from someone who keeps trying to reclaim it despite knowing better: the "emperor is naked" argument has the largest inverse relationship of "useful" to "annoying" of practically any other strategy you could take

also, telling people that someone they find interesting isn't really that interesting and they would only realize this if you patronizingly tell them over and over and over again doesn't work either (tried that one, too)

how come when the emperor is naked nobody ever comments on the size of his package

Hmm. When I see another Lady Gaga cover story or a column about the depth of Inception, I just close the computer or keep walking into the convenience store to buy the pack of almonds I came for.

see its funny, i thought i presented some fairly well-argued criticisms of her music & wasnt all about HEY SHEEPLE THE MIA WEARS NO CLOTHES (tbh that would probably get a lot more attention) until we ended up in a rabbit hole w/ lazy sniping from miccio & standard ilx bullying tactics that trolled instead of engaging w/ the actual arguments i made

deej also a terrible conspiracy you might want to know about is that liberal hollywood has conspired to make people think they enjoy movies with sex and violence, just by always giving lots of coverage to such filth - I am calling them out on this though, soon everyone will be back to wholesome comedies like won ton ton, the dog who saved hollywood

Mr. Que, Thursday, 5 August 2010 03:09 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah so no one cares but:

My interest in M.I.A. is driven by the fact that I like her music. I really couldn't care less about the critical furore around her. I'm only tangentially interested in her interviews; the last time I was deeply invested in following an artist's persona/personal life/work process/etc, I was in high school but I do like digging up where she gets inspiration for her material because usually there are allusions to some global situation I'm unaware of.

A lot of her negative critics argue from the standpoint that she is an infallible narrator and get angry when it's proven that she isn't. I don't get that; look at her whole story, where she came from and who she runs with. Her life, similarly to the lives of most people, is a ball of contradictory opinions and facts. I don't take her as an authority on anything other than being herself; what I do take her for is someone who works with others to make music I really dig who talks about things I'm interested in looking up for myself. That's why I'm interested in her.

I wager people are interested in writing about her because she came into prominence post 9/11 making dancefloor anthems that referenced violence and terrorism; the ongoing state of unease the country has been in since then lends itself pretty well to using her as a critical focal point.

ok, I'm going to Superman Returns this thread and pretend a huge chunk of the last hour's conversation didn't happen so I can uh finally discuss what I think of the album.

soooo I'm new to M.I.A. land, but Kala struck me pretty instantly, especially the ethnic percussive sounds. On first two listens, Maya is sounding enjoyable to my ears too. Contrary to Kala though i'm having a harder time determining and explaining why.

like it seems to me like she threw a lot of elements in a blender and it all comes down to whether you like how the different ingredients work with each other. it isn't one of those 'you just don't get it' things.

I really really love "Steppin Up"...

the bit about defiance being felt and not spelt out, and the sudden chaotic force of realization is some pretty writing but still, i think, complete bullshit. im not sure who is ventriloquizing for whom there. kind of don't think that there is a chaotic force of revelation felt by people who are actually being fucked over by the rulers of the world. imagine they perceive their lot right quick.

So you're saying a raised consciousness is as Western/Northern as pimping your authenticity as style?

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 5 August 2010 05:54 (thirteen years ago) link

I think radicalization is a lifelong process, with many realizations along the way (sometimes the same ones over and over, because we forget), and it cuts across the world. Sure, it's relative to power and privilege ("Amazing Grace" versus Nat Turner), but nobody's born free, whatever M.I.A. and Andy Williams have to say about it.

As for sputtering--what was it Jordan said? "90% of verbalized thoughts about politics in any form are sadly shit." I obviously don't agree about M.I.A.'s lyrics and album: To my ears, she's really going for this harmony-out-of-chaos, "Oh, now I see" Magic Eye thing in words/music like someone stepping back and seeing things for the first time.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 5 August 2010 05:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Re: The above. Do you honestly think MIA is in the process of becoming "radicalized" and this is expressed in her music? That's an interesting take I hadn't thought of before.

Hadn't really occurred to me--I was more thinking the music evokes this process, whether or not the inspiration is recent, autobiographical, or even entirely intentional or conscious.
