they quote counting crows in that song? i thought it was springsteen.

one of the many great things about the songwriting here (and something that's lacking a little in the new one i think) are the great bridges/codas in a lot of these songs. none of these songs are very long, by any means, but it's a testament to the strong songwriting that they all feel fresh however many dozen times i've listened to this. (think "when our boots they hit the ground..." from 'high lonesome' or "as we go down, down, down" from 'miles davis' or the honestly breathtaking "and now i driiiive the 101..." from 'meet me by the river's edge'.)

This gonna sound ridiculously corny indie of me - but the title song can still reduce me to a big weepy mess in the best way possible.

"...River's Edge" is a close second.

That's a godamn Springsteen reference. I'm on fire

is no one gonna rep for anything on the back half of this record other than "river's edge"?

This Friday, SideOneDummy Records will release the original demo sessions for The ’59 Sound, a glimpse into the band’s first stab at a record that would take on meaning few imagined
*drools*

oh man, they CRUSH this version of "the patient ferris wheel". brian's vocals are as good as I've ever heard them -- really hamming it up too, without being over the top
― k3vin k., Friday, 15 June 2018 04:34 (five years ago) link
REALLY leaves you wishing this version had that sick coda, as great as the vocal-less version here is

Rosamilia: It was the coolest thing ever at that point, a label showing us around the office. They had nachos just there, ready to go. Joe said something like, “Tuesdays, we nosh on ’chos.”

That whole oral history is just so earnest and innocent. I love this:
Fallon: I remember the tape echo being a big thing. People were like, “What?” and I was like, “Yeah, the tape echo. What’s the matter with you? Have you never listened to the Clash, or Bruce Springsteen, or literally any band?” This is a thing. It’s the whole sound. But it wasn’t common for a punk band.
Which sort of gets at the core of the group, dopey kids whose frame of reference is Floggy Molly and Bouncing Souls and Hot Water Music or whatever, yet don't know the Clash from Bruce from who knows what, because they're so wrapped up in the '90s/'00s alt-punk scene.
All the Bruce stuff is great.
(Bruce) just walked up and was like, “Can I play that song with you?” My first answer to him was not, “Yeah.” My first answer was, “Do you know it?”

man I've actually never taken the time to look at the lyric sheets. "great expectations" kind of cuts me open

the lyrics on the record are generally fantastic

aw i'm gonna listen to this today, it's been... almost ten years

"Miles Davis & The Cool" – 4:11 1
best song on the record imo, title track can't even touch it
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 16:11 (five years ago) link
there's something so much more ingratiating to me about quoting fuckin Counting Crows than all the classy on the nose reference points that are usually in their lyrics
lol i just recorded an album where i deliberately referenced "raining in baltimore" in a fast punk song. think the sensibility of this record stuck with me more than i was even aware of
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 16:12 (five years ago) link
weird side note but i think the title track's music video is the first youtube video i ever saw in 480p, i was like "wow everything is so clear, i guess this is the future"
― flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 16:15 (five years ago) link
I actually think I prefer the demo version of "ferris wheel" to the studio version. even more animated, if that's possible
