whoa that cromagnon song is A+++++, how have i not heard that before

CHEESECAKE VOTING FRUIT HATING SCUM (jjjusten), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:19 (thirteen years ago) link

I certainly wasn't expecting it to get higher than about 70, so that came as a total surprise. Although squealing like a schoolgirl with delight is probably not a very metal response to it placing, is it?

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:20 (thirteen years ago) link

is the whole cromagnon album that insane and awesome?

CHEESECAKE VOTING FRUIT HATING SCUM (jjjusten), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:21 (thirteen years ago) link

The rest of the album is possibly more insane, but it turns into less of a song-based album and more of a torture chamber sound effects album. Which I think is awesome, but your mileage might vary.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean, pretty much exactly like an *actual* sound effects album, not using that figuratively or anything. It's very strange.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I think you might like it, though.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 16:25 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah nurse with wound is still my top last.fm artist i think so i should probably go obtain this right about now

Was there ever any doubt Led Zep wouldn't make it ffs? a metal poll without sabbath/zep is like a poll without beatles/stones, aint gonna happen.

I voted for dazed & confused btw.

Someone should call the ASPCA because this band looks like they are being badly underfed by their owners

Back to the grindstone:

Burzum – Det Som En Gang Var: Well, I don’t want to like this, but I’m gonna give it a fair go and try to disconnect it from its creator. The intro is kind of pleasant, sort of neo-classical new agey? Goes on a bit, though. When the song finally kicks in, it’s nothing spectacular, fairly average. Ends up sounding a bit like a soundtrack for some horror film, perhaps? Not bad, but I can’t quite work out why people go nuts for this. (Also, hopefully not incurring the wrath of any deranged fans, it sounds a bit wimpy, don’t you think?)

Public Enemy – She Watch Channel Zero: And yeah, this couldn’t have come at a better time. Absolutely awesome. I ended up not really knocking this down my ballot much, as I think it is a justifiable track for inclusion in this poll. Again, it’s more rocking than the bloody Manics song that got on.

Venom – Black Metal: I think if someone put this on at a party, I would find it hideously annoying, but I have become so inured by listening to this list that I currently think it’s alright. But I dunno, I guess it has something to do with how you’re supposed to respond to this stuff – do metal fans take it seriously, or is it okay to like it because you’re amused by it? Also, I note that Herr Neuname called them ‘lo-fi’ metal – this is probably part of the reason why I don’t mind it. If it was slicker I think it’d piss me off more.

Slayer – Raining Blood: I still hate Slayer. Also, they ruin Guitar Hero for me. Next.

Iron Maiden – Iron Maiden: This one doesn’t do anything for me. Lack of video means there’s nothing to even laugh at.

Kyuss – Supa Scoopa & Mighty Scoop: Oh god, CRINGE-MAKING intro. The main body of the song is a bit better but it’s still kind of embarrassing. Again, I know loads of people who love this – why? It’s really unimaginative. At least it’s not as boring as that Melvins track, but it replaces that with sounding like the inspiration for some of the worst grunge-associated rock pants. I do quite like the long drawn-out way it ends, though.

Mastodon – March of the Fire Ants: Serious metal is serious? Uh, not my thing.

I sang a bunch of death metal last week, but only because I was throwing up a sock that I decided to eat.

Henry Kvlt Pvp, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Three of my votes in a row there, and all 10+ minutes

Dude! What! YES!

kkvgz, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Death metal has been notably light in this poll, but here's to another of my top 5 placing.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

That is a great song. As is Achilles.

This is music for old people who are old. You can call it a classic, but I guarantee that once Chinese Democracy hits the stores no one will even remember this song.

Henry Kvlt Pvp, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Ugh. Most boring song on here by a band not named Manic Street Preachers.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Achilles was my #2 and one of my only 2 nominations, awesome to see it this high

the older the voter, the less likely they were to vote for a track after 1990

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Okay, I have caught up:

Hawkwind – Silver Machine: Yeah! This is a killer track. Give me some more of those whoosh space noises and I will be happy for the rest of the day. Have extra special fondness for this as when my band were just getting together we used to muck about playing this for hours in the practice rooms. To be honest, I could probably just listen to this on repeat instead of carrying on down the list. But carry on I shall!

AC/DC – You Shook Me All Night Long: Urgh, frat blues rock. Perfect for jocks to leer at women to. It sounds like sexual harassment at skanky bars.

High On Fire – 10,000 Years: I’ve always been sad that this band are not named after the Telescopes song. I think this might be the best one of the stoner stuff so far. Although that’s not saying much, and I still don’t really get the appeal. Is it pretty much a necessity that one is stoned while listening to this genre?

Judas Priest – Victim of Changes: Hmmm, I dunno. Can’t really think of anything interesting to say about this one. It’s not doing very much. Oh, at 4 minutes something it’s gone all phase-y in my headphones, that’s interesting. Looking it up on Wikipedia, I see this is some sort of mash-up of two songs to make an epic-length song, huh? I’m not sure it works.

Cromagnon – Caledonia: Surely my jubilation earlier is enough? If you haven’t listened to this yet, go do it. My favourite proto-death metal experimental bagpipe tune of all time. OF ALL TIME.

Led Zeppelin – Dazed and Confused: I don’t like Led Zeppelin. This seems more boring than excruciating at first listen, however. I must confess I’m not sure how I’m supposed to get through all 20-odd minutes of it, though. Okay, how about this, if anything interesting happens after the 6 minute mark, someone tell me and I’ll have a listen, because so far this is very tedious.

Jane’s Addiction – Three Days: The beginning of this sounds much more interesting than the last Jane’s Addiction track, though I’m worried it may go into some sort of terrible ballad. Oh, hello 1:00, you have confirmed my fear. Sorry, your nice ambient multi-layered background vocal trick can’t save this. Ah but okay, so it changes again. The beat is alright here and the vocals a bit better. Argh, but terrible guitar solo comes in. Now I am so confused, there are bits I like about this and bits I think are just dreadful. The not-good bits seem to last much much longer, though, so I think they have won.

Led Zeppelin – Achilles Last Stand: ilx doesn’t seem to like a very varied selection of bands, does it? (Not that I can talk, I had loads of multiples in my ballot.) I still don’t like Led Zeppelin. Am I caught up with the poll results yet? *clicks* Nope, the sheer length of these songs means I have more.

Entombed – Left Hand Path: Now that’s what I call cookie monster. I hereby call it that Entombed are better than Led Zep. In case there is any confusion, this is because Led Zeppelin are rubbish. Actually, also because it turns into music from The Exorcist about 4 minutes in. Where did that come from?

Guns ‘N Roses – Paradise City: This is just a bad song. So much boring stuff in here, guys! I was expecting a metal poll to have more lunacy and witchcraft.

I'm assuming this is the right video, all the rest of the ones that popped up were some creepy old mechanic looking dude playing a cover with his kid.

This is so on the money.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

did you not see the songs that were nominated; it was basically "everyone's favorite hobby horse + 60 songs/bands whose appearance on this list are inevitable"

Mayor Hickenlooper and the liberal agenda (HI DERE), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm not a big metal fan and am still following this poll with interest, but why the fuck would you even read this thread if you don't like Zep

The chickbad from the ludicrous 'ludacris' song (some dude), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I know! Although I perhaps chose the wrong act to level that at - I mean, I might not like G'n'R, but they are a ridiculously famous band, so I shouldn't begrudge them their places here.

Zep are played out and aren't metal much.
