Anyone think Henry has done such a great job he should be invited to help on the albums rundown?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 12:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Explain me "supa scoopa & mighty scoop"

More from the youtubes:

Danzig – Mother: Yeah, okay. Danzig is cool (and I swear I don’t just think this because of the Shakira/Danzig mash-up, or indeed the dancing/Danzig replacement game). Again, I’m not going to go around listening to this all the time, but it’s all good.

Manilla Road – Necropolis: Never even heard of this. Started off with a bog-standard riff, and I was assuming that it was gonna be yet more of the stuff that I don’t like, but then I accidentally clicked to play both the embedded version and the one on the youtube site, and it made it have really awesome multi-tracked vocals. Just a shame that it was my own remix that did this, rather than the song itself. It’s alright, though, strong tune, pretty good mystical shit.

Angel Witch – Angel Witch: Again, this is okay. This run is definitely better than the last one. But it is all a bit... silly, isn’t it? To be honest, this sounds far more glam than metal. Which is fine by me. Ha, I like the little chant at about 2:20. I’m starting to believe that maybe I *am* an angel witch, whatever that may be.

Helmet – Unsung: Oh god, I didn’t realise I knew this song until the vocals came in. One of the better ones from the early ‘90s, definitely. I like how they all look like complete dorks, too. Again, not completely convinced this is metal.

Sepultura – Refuse/Resist: Like the clip, hate the song. Bah.

Soundgarden – Outshined: Ugh, more Soundgarden. Bah humbug. What’s with these lyrics “looking California, feeling Minnesota”? This clichéd bullshit was actually thought of as deep and meaningful at some point? Double ugh. And really stupid backing vocals. And that horrible pop-rock vocal style. Woah yeah, bodyform. Stupid, bad, pathetic.

Jimi Hendrix – Voodoo Child: I’ve always had respect for Hendrix without a lot of liking to go with it, but putting him next to crap like Soundgarden may well have changed that. A lot of what he does is showboating, but there are some awesome songs behind that, and his voice is pretty great. The footage is excellent, too.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 12:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Gonna stop for a few hours, but I'll try to maintain a reasonable amount of youtube watching unless it's annoying people.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 12:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it's great! Keep going! (even if you're rong about the great songs by trouble and soundgarden etc)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 12:54 (thirteen years ago) link

btw hang around for the next track, it's your fault it made the top 100!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 12:55 (thirteen years ago) link

It's totally not annoying. Even though I don't agree with your views all the time (particularly w/r/t harsh metal vocals), I think your posts are the best contributions to this thread.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 12:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Kyuss were robbed. That's my favourite rock track of all time I think.

village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 12:57 (thirteen years ago) link

no thoughts on the excellent mastodon track?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:05 (thirteen years ago) link

hang around for the next track, it's your fault it made the top 100!

Haha, I don't like the sound of 'fault', here.

Just had to change from the sound-making computer as the mister's laptop overheats fairly quickly. If I give it some cooldown time I can continue.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:08 (thirteen years ago) link

you should hang around a bit longer too, you're doing well here. Your ballot is more ilm metal friendly than you thought.

The next song, is probably not what you're thinking its gonna be (sadly). Its a classic, but its not really metal... but....

Hawkwind - Silver Machine (1972) (343 Points, 9 votes)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Aw, alright! Definitely not what I thought it might be, but come on, this is awesome. And while it may not be metal, there's no way it isn't heavy rock.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Kate really needs to be here!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah this was the song where Hawkwind reined in the excesses and actually made a chart friendly pop rock number, but still with audio generators a go-go and ridiculous lyrics about space travel or time travel or something. Almost got to #1 in the UK singles chart too!

A prog venn diagram for you to think about (Matt #2), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:19 (thirteen years ago) link

This list is starting to kick some ass now. Lemmy, Maiden, Slayer,Mastodon. that 12 hour break I took paid off.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:20 (thirteen years ago) link

I think you will enjoy the next couple too, bill. Nothing I've hated here so far btw. ILM has good taste shock.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Never totally understood why Silver Machine was always more popular than say Master of the Universe or Orgone Accumulator. Always sounded like Quo or something to me. And I like Quo and all, but heck a Quo riff just isn't a suitable vehicle for interplanetary exploration imo.

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:25 (thirteen years ago) link

haha no wonder, I just realised 11 from my ballot is here (and i didnt vote any funkadelic so no-one could accuse me of getting my fave band in it)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Nah, Nick, it doesn't sound like Quo. It may (well, uh, I guess does) have a similar base, but it does things that Quo can't. I do agree that they have other stuff that is weirder and wilder, and yeah, better, but Silver Machine is a pretty great starting point.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Orgone Accumulator is my fave

Gah, I feel responsible for this placing so low - I gave it about twenty points, but should've gone double that. Wonderful, uplifting song.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 13:56 (thirteen years ago) link

If only more strippers voted. Would have been #1.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Going through the YouTubes now as the day progresses. Listening to every song.

100. MC5 - Kick Out the Jams: Not bad, I've heard this a bunch before. My first exposure to MC5, unfortunately, was the Rage Against the Machine cover of this song. Which is terrible, and kept me away from MC5 for too long. Rating: B+

99. Trouble - Memory's Garden: Not my thing. D

98. Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness: Sounds like '80s U2 meets Automatic-era JAMC. But I'd much rather listen to U2 or JAMC than play this again. Really, really boring. F

97. Diamond Head - Am I Evil: Alright, this is pretty good. Lots of different constituent parts that somehow cohere into a pretty good song. Haven't heard this before. How's the rest of their stuff? A-

96. Witchfinder General - Witchfinder General: Like the Sabbath(?) influence, but kinda monotonous until the soloing starts and then pulls back again too quickly. Like the lead guitar tones. Sounds like something I would like on paper. In practice, it's just alright, though. C+

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:08 (thirteen years ago) link

94. Soundgarden - Rusty Cage: Chris Cornell's singing is like nails on a chalkboard. Ugh. D-

94. Faith No More - Midlife Crisis: Awesome. Love this band, love this song. I've been playing FNM a lot this year given the reunion and such. Sounds great. Patton at the peak of his powers, before he got *too* quirky and a bit indiscriminate in his tastes. (Gotta admit he runs a great label at Ipecac, though.) A+

93. Ministry - Just One Fix: Always kinda liked this song for some reason. Ministry had a pretty hot career streak up until this album, which was the beginning of the end. With Sympathy really does tower over the rest of their stuff, sadly. B-

92. Guns N' Roses - Welcome to the Jungle: I'm no fan, and this is pretty far from my usual tastes, but gotta admit this track is classic. Mostly for the guitar heroics. Lots of fun to play on Guitar Hero, too. B+

91. Celtic Frost - Mexican Radio: My first time hearing Celtic Frost, I think. Cookie Monster vocals are awful; the rest is unremarkable. Yaaawwn. Sorry, I can't get with this one. C-

..No-one is gonna say LEMMY AIN'T METAL

Except Lemmy himself. Pretty much every interview (most recently on That Metal Show) he points out that he has never made any heavy metal music. It's just rock 'n' roll. He's sure influenced a lot of metal bands though. Out of respect for the man, I extracted a separate heavy rock list from my metal list on my site.

Diamond Head - Am I Evil: Alright, this is pretty good. Lots of different constituent parts that somehow cohere into a pretty good song. Haven't heard this before. How's the rest of their stuff?

This was their best song, but the rest of their first album was v. good. Second album Borrowed Time was less good, and their third and final album Canterbury was just weird, they tried to go prog but it all went a bit wrong and they split up.

That album rules too: Last, Baghdad, etc. All that stuff crushes.

Def still my fave HOF album, but everyone has their own fave.

Mine is Blessed Black Wings. Im sure there will be at least one song from that popping up on this list.

Never heard this, or the band even, until now. Rather good, isn't it.

89. Sepultura - Territory: UGH... these vocals. "RAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRR!!!!!!" ...sorry, I'll pass. D

88. Celtic Frost - I Won't Dance: I don't dislike this as much as the previous Celtic Frost track. That said, it still sounds entirely unremarkable. LOL at the backing vocals, for sure. C-

87. Slayer - War Ensemble: I prefer other Slayer tracks, this one's okay. Not generally into "thrashy" stuff, though. YouTube commenter says: "Justin bever can eat the assortment of nuts out of my shit" -- frankly, I'd rather play Bieber's "Baby" on repeat than "War Ensemble" -- sorry, Slayer. C+

87. Danzig - Mother: Now we're talking. I need to investigate into Danzig a bit more, this is great. Not sure why I haven't gotten into them already. Where do I start? Suggestions welcome... B+

86. Manilla Road - Necropolis: Never heard of these guys. Doesn't sound like I've been missing much. What the hell...? D-

Henry will be back online in just a few minutes, but he says that people should let him know if the linked youtubes dont work, because he refuses to look at them since "hair metal and posers are MTV's fault".

Mark "The Shark" Shelton certainly polarises opinion with his "one of the seven dwarfs" vocal style
