Haha, excellent. I doubt my votes will be enough to get Cromagnon or Black Widow in, though (still have a little hope for my top two).

Don't tell me! I will be crossing my fingers up until the number one is announced.

emil.y, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 23:48 (thirteen years ago) link

(Neither will be number one. Though both kind of deserve it.)

but first, lets talk venom! Masters of lo-fi metal who invented a genre, anyone guess what it was?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 23:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm woefully underexposed to Venom. I have Welcome to Hell and At War with Satan, but not Black Metal for whatever reason. I really should listen to them more.

No slayer fans around?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Sure, but Slayer is Slayer and there's not really any new insight as to why they are the way they are at this point. In short, "Raining Blood" pummels your ass. Next?

So far, this list spans from 1968-1998. Also, just noticed I fucked up Public Enemy's year. I'll catch that on the next go-round.

What's from the past decade that has a shot of making it?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 01:26 (thirteen years ago) link

some great sutff so far - some sketchy stuff too. Love that two WFG tracks placed!! I pushed hard for them in the youtubes thread, maybe that helped!

also, I'm pretty sure most the the Led will be above the #50 mark... just sayin', don't get too anxious guys.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 01:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Surprisingly lowest so far goes to Welcome To The Jungle.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 01:38 (thirteen years ago) link

What will be the highest ranking Motörhead song that's not Ace Of Spades?

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 02:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Killed By Death. Which I may have given more points.

Number of the Beast most surprisingly low thus far for me. I would have put it in the top ten in this room, for sure.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 05:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Already mentioned, but the points spread is low- does this widen out a bit later on?

Neil S, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 07:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Killed By Death > Ace Of Spades

Better video too.

Captain Ahab, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 07:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I should've nommed "I'll Be Your Sister," but it probably wouldn't have gotten anywhere.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 07:49 (thirteen years ago) link

xp to aldo: the iron maiden vote prbably got spread too thin. I imagine we'll still see 2 Minutes to Midnight and a couple of others along the way.

kkvgz, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 10:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Okay, I've started my youtube watching marathon. I think I'm gonna post up semi-liveblogged stuff in a few groups of around 5/6 songs, so if anyone wants me to stop my ill-informed rambling just say so. Initial reactions:

MC5 – Kick Out the Jams: Well, this is obviously awesome. I voted for it, I love it. No video, though, which is a shame.

Trouble – Memory’s Garden: Urgh, insipid shit. This is why I sometimes have difficulty with metal being tied to ‘hard’ rock – I can see why this has various tropes that belong to the genre of metal, but it’s sooooo weak. Okay, I’ve watched half of this and I’m far too bored. Off off off.

Manic Street Preachers – Motorcycle Emptiness: Didn’t really need to watch this as I know the song, but I’d not seen the video. Cor, wasn’t James Dean Bradfield thin back in the day? And no matter how shit the song, Nicky and Richey were pretty damn hot. ANYWAY, I can totally see why people would complain about this being here – it’s further removed than even a ‘metal ballad’. God, the production is so bland. And it goes on forever. Arrrrrgh. On the other hand, if G’n’R count, then anything off Generation Terrorists has to be allowed.

Diamond Head – Am I Evil: I’m pretty sure I don’t know the Metallica version, so will take this entirely on its own merits. They definitely look like pretty awesome dudes, and the intro has warmed me to them straight away. This had better carry on being good. Hmm, around 1:20 gets a bit too widdly for me. But then back into a steady driving riff, so that’s okay. Yeah, I definitely like this. Probably wouldn’t get massively heavy rotation at home, but it suits my tastes fairly well.

Witchfinder General – Witchfinder General: Okay, at about a minute in, I *really* like this. Like, a lot. I hope I eventually find something that’s not from this era that I like in this poll. Otherwise it’ll get far too predictable. Again, though, they flirt with pointless soloing, but pull it back from the brink pretty quickly (I know I’ll get yelled at for hating on ‘pointless soloing’ and ‘widdly guitar crap’ on a metal/heavy rock poll thread, but y’know, I think it sucks, it doesn’t even sound heavy, it just sounds like a wanky whiny little guy showing off. You can get much heavier without it).

Okay, some more thoughts:

Faith No More – Midlife Crisis: Ha, I really can’t do any critical appraisal of this song. It just reminds me of my brothers – I wasn’t even really much of a Faith No More fan when I was younger, but this song is just a wave of nostalgia.

Soundgarden – Rusty Cage: On the other hand, while this is perhaps not *quite* as bad as I remember Soundgarden being, I can’t muster up any enthusiasm or interest in it at all. And whoops, I accidentally navigated away from the page on which it was playing. Oh well.

Guns ‘N Roses – Welcome to the Jungle: I have to say, I am surprised this is so low. Still, not even repeated Guitar Hero fun has warmed me to this very much. Nor do I hate it, really. It just exists. La la la la, la la la la.

Ministry – Just One Fix: Nice little pop-up telling off of Rammstein fans in the video, haha. Someone’s touchy. Never really listened to Ministry before, but I’ve always been sympathetic to industrial stuff. And yeah, a nice illustration of what I was saying about how you can be much harder without having yr guitar wibbles. Can’t say that I like it, particularly, but I recognise a bunch of ideas and aesthetics that I appreciate.

Celtic Frost – Mexican Radio: I started reading another thread on ilx and forgot I was even listening to anything. This is pretty bland, isn’t it? I guess pop-metal or something? Fairly pleasantly pop, I guess, but, uh...

Sepultura – Territory: Rargh, proper metal vocals. I never liked Sepultura, and this hasn’t changed my mind.

Celtic Frost – I Won’t Dance: Hahahahaaa, those backing vocals! I think I like this even less than their other one. Jesus, I’m starting to regret doing this now.

Slayer – War Ensemble: And this isn’t helping. I hate Slayer. This is just annoying. I’m gonna have to break for a bit, with the promise of something not entirely awful when I can stand to resume.

More from the youtubes:

Danzig – Mother: Yeah, okay. Danzig is cool (and I swear I don’t just think this because of the Shakira/Danzig mash-up, or indeed the dancing/Danzig replacement game). Again, I’m not going to go around listening to this all the time, but it’s all good.

Manilla Road – Necropolis: Never even heard of this. Started off with a bog-standard riff, and I was assuming that it was gonna be yet more of the stuff that I don’t like, but then I accidentally clicked to play both the embedded version and the one on the youtube site, and it made it have really awesome multi-tracked vocals. Just a shame that it was my own remix that did this, rather than the song itself. It’s alright, though, strong tune, pretty good mystical shit.

Angel Witch – Angel Witch: Again, this is okay. This run is definitely better than the last one. But it is all a bit... silly, isn’t it? To be honest, this sounds far more glam than metal. Which is fine by me. Ha, I like the little chant at about 2:20. I’m starting to believe that maybe I *am* an angel witch, whatever that may be.

Helmet – Unsung: Oh god, I didn’t realise I knew this song until the vocals came in. One of the better ones from the early ‘90s, definitely. I like how they all look like complete dorks, too. Again, not completely convinced this is metal.

Sepultura – Refuse/Resist: Like the clip, hate the song. Bah.

Soundgarden – Outshined: Ugh, more Soundgarden. Bah humbug. What’s with these lyrics “looking California, feeling Minnesota”? This clichéd bullshit was actually thought of as deep and meaningful at some point? Double ugh. And really stupid backing vocals. And that horrible pop-rock vocal style. Woah yeah, bodyform. Stupid, bad, pathetic.

Jimi Hendrix – Voodoo Child: I’ve always had respect for Hendrix without a lot of liking to go with it, but putting him next to crap like Soundgarden may well have changed that. A lot of what he does is showboating, but there are some awesome songs behind that, and his voice is pretty great. The footage is excellent, too.
