I don't know much about the room but this actually looks like it has pretty good writing in a very off kilter japanese-take-on-twin-peaks way

great ost too

If this is The Room as a video game I will buy it immediately. Y/N?

It's Twin Peaks meets Resident Evil 4 on a low budget.

Do you mean Tommy Wiseau's The Room, or Silent Hill's The Room? Both seem like appropriate questions.

Ok, I'm just going to go ahead and say it - this is making my end of year list for sure. It is HOPELESSLY shitty in so many ways, and there are some incredibly frustrating and awful gameplay moments for sure, but oh man the rewards that are there are golden. Not in a purely "so bad its good" way either, some of the moments here are so out of left field brilliant that they are jaw-dropping. Whoever scripted this knew exactly what they were doing.

FAIR WARNING: if you have a pulse, you will hate the first hour or so of this game, no question, but stick with it because it's worth it. Repeat this mantra the first time you drive (oh and also be sure to hit the a button to talk every chance you get, there is hidden gold, especially when you are driving alone). Also keep this persistence creed in mind the first time you have a long long long series of timed button presses to escape from danger (trust me, you'll know it when you see it).

god damn i love this game

haha wild

if i hate res evil style horror games is that a problem

goole, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 15:46 (thirteen years ago) link

well not really because the gameplay is so terrible and shitty that there isnt really a way to enjoy playing the game no matter what sort of games you like. i know that doesnt seem to make sense but idk you just have to trust me on this one

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE CGI (jjjusten), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Is this available as an XBLA game, or do i have to go to a gamestop to get it, or what?

Mordy, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:13 (thirteen years ago) link

you know now that i think of it "deadly premonition" makes some actual sense as a phrase unlike "resident evil" and "silent hill" which are just stupid.

goole, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:14 (thirteen years ago) link

the resident is evil (he's a zombie!), the hill is silent (everyone is dead!), the premonition is deadly (your prophecy will kill u!)

Mordy, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:17 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i dont think this will ever make it to XBLA, but it should be used at just about every gamestop on the planet for like $17

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE CGI (jjjusten), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Mordy, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:19 (thirteen years ago) link

hahaha ok but i take no responsibility if you hate it - many people do!

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE CGI (jjjusten), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:21 (thirteen years ago) link

no, this totally sounds like my thing. if it's anything like a video game version of The Room (a film I've seen 17 times and own the DVD of -- because my friends decided it would be the perfect gift for me) then it'll become my fave video game of all time.

Mordy, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE CGI (jjjusten), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 19:05 (thirteen years ago) link

It really isn't like The Room in any way other than being enjoyably weird and shoddy.

no gut busting joke can change history (polyphonic), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link

But weird and shoddy in an unfathomably uncanny way, right? Cause that's what I respond to in the Room.

Mordy, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 20:19 (thirteen years ago) link

is there a bit in the game where you're just sittin there, thinkin?

goole, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 20:31 (thirteen years ago) link

no but it seems that often the only rational thing to do when you are in an abandoned lumbermill surrounded by creepy ghosts and being chased by an invincible killer is to take some time and shave.

srsly this is one of the most bizarro games ever. just found out that if you are wandering around and bored you can go full on peeping tom crepe and peer through the windows of the unsuspecting townfolk. also kind of loving that you can only buy a couple of things from the nice elderly lady that runs the hotel, but naturally one of those things is machine gun bullets. and lollipops.

cozen - game is coming to the UK

Thursday 12th August 2010: Rising Star Games has announced it will be publishing the infamous Xbox 360 game Deadly Premonition in PAL territories, with the survival horror game slated for an autumn release.

Although Rising Star has an agreement to bring Marvelous Entertainment's games to market in PAL territories, Deadly Premonition was notably absent from the publisher's Q4 line-up, which it announced at the beginning of June.

"Having seen how Deadly Premonition split reviewers' opinions in America, gamers are itching to get their hands on it to judge it for themselves," says Martin Defries, managing director, Rising Star Games. "We have high hopes for what can only be described as the most distinctive survival horror game that has ever been released - it's going to be interesting to see how the game is received over here. It's a cult classic in the making."

To date Deadly Premonition has split reviewers down the middle - Destructoid awarded it 10/10, saying: "Judged as a piece of entertainment, as a game that consistently surprises and amazes and leaves jaws hanging, I have no choice but to say that Deadly Premonition goes above and beyond."

At the other end of the scale, IGN named it "terrible", awarding it just 2/10. It said: "Awful in nearly every way… Terrible controls. Terrible pacing. Terrible sound effects. Terrible visuals." However, gamers have been making up their own minds - on Metacritic the average user rating is 8.4/10.

Developed by Access Games, Deadly Premonition is an open-world game set in Greenvale, a secluded rural town in North West America. Playing as FBI Special Agent Francis York, gamers are charged with investigating the shocking, ritualistic and brutal murder of a local girl.

Deadly Premonition launches for £24.99 in the autumn.

wow this just gets more uh the further i get - for every WHY THE FUCK CANT I WALK UP THE STAIRS moment (oh trust me u will know exactly what im talking about when u play it) you get a batshit crazy story from "the general" or a discussion of "the sinner's sandwich" or the sheriffs deputy creepily dancing alone to non-existent music in the hotel room he lives in while you peep through the curtains at him. none of these are spoilers btw. im not even sure if you dould spoiler this game because it makes no goddamn sense most of the time.

its completely fucking unhinged - and unlike what some people are saying, not all the shittiness is intentional, but some of it definitely is (there is no way that using the old doom "picture of something on flat plane" technique to do the vegetable bins in the grocery store was anything other than intentional for example). i still dont know what the hell to make of all of it. also somewhere in there is a totally engrossing story. i think.

also, BEST PAUSE MENU IN ANY GAME EVER.

gg eileen (jjjusten), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 19:02 (thirteen years ago) link

another totally bizarre thing about this is that every so often out of the blue will come a really well acted and totally touching moment and then its right back into the blender of weird.

probably clocked at least 20 hours so far, only on day 2! however i would be lying if i told you that all of that time was enjoyable. there are some slogs here for sure.

I played through the first part (which I'd already seen before) and am looking forward to continuing. I think I'm going to only play a bit at a time, though. The gameplay is pretty terrible, so small doses is for the best.

hahaha ok i hit the first point in the game where i am 99% sure someone on the development team is not only in on the joke, but actively fucking with me. real time 30 mph LONG LONG LONG tailing a suspect sequence concluded by - well you know yer just going to have to find out for yourself.

yeah if i am not being clear here i have def got more solid enjoyment out of this than any other game thats come out this year i think. like i am pretty sure ill never finish red dead but i am certain that ill finish this

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 2 September 2010 20:15 (thirteen years ago) link

also no runthrough could really do this justice, the instrusions of bizzaro crazy kinda come from all angles. random conversations with NPCs that are otherwise obviously useless can yield fantastic results for example.

not to keep sounding like the street team for this - its def not for everyone - but its way better than the whole "so bad its good" thing, it stands up as a really legitimately entertaining (albeit sometimes frustrating) experience. whoever suggested rolling through on simple difficulty is otm though, yer def not playing this for the game mechanics.

pro tip: get some infinite ammo weapons early in the game, or you will break something in your house in response to the section w/several wall crawling ghosty things.

still digging this, although ive definitely missed out on some side missions and whatever. the bizarroness is starting to gel into something fascinating beyond lols tho - i think there might actually be something intriguing going on behind all this o_O stuff. we'll see.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 7 February 2013 22:57 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, i think the greatness of this game did get buried in the so bad its good vibe like i said upthread. there are some really shocking and startlingly emotional moments, and they are so interesting within this alien landscape of oddness rather than badness - def a game where i suspect many reviewers just didnt give it time to turn into what it really is and just got hung up on the gameplay, to which i say hey man, people please choose to play og resident evil games, this is a hell of a lot better than that.

theres at least one murder scene (no spoilers) that rivals anything "dark" ive ever seen in videogaming, and when it drops into a game with the sinners sandwich and one sided conversations between the protagonist and himself its like a slap in the face.

everyone should play Deadly Premonition 1, but I can't speak to how well it plays on the switch since at least the 360 and PC versions all had their own problems.

Judi Dench's Human Hand (methanietanner), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 20:06 (two years ago) link

play the 360 version. it's back compatible with the bone and series consoles too

if xbox is not an option, the various ports are all slightly worse than the 360 original: the director's cut extra content is pointless, game looks worse, performance is worse, crashes are more frequent. still worth checking out imo, but the switch one is the worst port of all i think

definitely don't bother with 2 unless you've played 1. i loved 1 but couldn't stomach 2, ymmv

chihuahuau, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 20:25 (two years ago) link

yeah 2 was not well received even by huge fans of 1 so i stayed away. sounded like it was just worse all around - writing not as charming or engaging, performance downgraded from 'janky low budget game' to 'so broken it's barely playable'
