but wait, i thought this was i LOVE music...

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 20:07 (sixteen years ago) link

i really dug rubies and from the few times i've heard it this one's good as well. neither of them's a streethawk but they do the grandiose ridiculous epic thing pretty well, i think.

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 6 December 2007 06:44 (sixteen years ago) link

i wonder what's "Plaza Trinidad" is about.
(will the lyrics of this record will be good for a good drinking game as well?)

Zeno, Thursday, 6 December 2007 07:01 (sixteen years ago) link

one month passes...

in the meantime, the other current Destroyer project "hello, blue roses" (with the catchy title:"The Portrait Is Finished and I Have Failed to Capture Your Beauty..." )is leaked.

Zeno, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 15:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, did I click on a Destroyer thread by mistake?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:08 (sixteen years ago) link

and it sounds like yet another unnecessary joni-mitchell-meets--indie effort

Zeno, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:10 (sixteen years ago) link

"Oh, did I click on a Destroyer thread by mistake"

self-denial?!

Zeno, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I dunno. I like the rekkids, just not the threads about them.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, did I bookmark a Destroyer thread by mistake?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:13 (sixteen years ago) link

this one is still innocence though.(not for a lone time prob.)

Zeno, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Beggars might ride, but not for long.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:17 (sixteen years ago) link

leaky leaky

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 03:58 (sixteen years ago) link

and?

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 10:43 (sixteen years ago) link

awesome

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 10:44 (sixteen years ago) link

not as immediately great as rubies (or at least nothing's hit me straight-on like 'painter in your pocket') but the instrument on this is so fleshed-out and great

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 10:45 (sixteen years ago) link

yammy!

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 10:46 (sixteen years ago) link

a pfrk 10 maybe...

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 10:47 (sixteen years ago) link

i can't tell if ppl will think this is great or if im just falling for it bcuz it's really good and sounds a lot like rubies

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 10:51 (sixteen years ago) link

well,according to this:
http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/destroyer/trouble_in_dreams/

ppl will think it's great.

i think it's great too, it catchs you up on the first listening.

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 10:55 (sixteen years ago) link

oh shit is that really the cover?

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 10:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i think at least some of the tracks were recorded live on the studio

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 11:00 (sixteen years ago) link

hopefully not cuz that looks like it was made on indesign xp

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 11:00 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah there's one in the middle where you can hear bejar briefly chatting then counting off the band

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 11:01 (sixteen years ago) link

about the cover, i'm not sure, it might be also this one - a better one for sure:

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 11:02 (sixteen years ago) link

hypertext record for optional drinking games - out

rubies melodies and the "da da da da..." - still in

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 11:22 (sixteen years ago) link

spidery guitar lines- still in

wailing piano- still in

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 11:29 (sixteen years ago) link

so far i think

back half (esp 'introducing angels' and on)>front

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 11:32 (sixteen years ago) link

almost no surprises, but thats a good think.
(i mean, i'm not one of the "your blues fan)

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 11:34 (sixteen years ago) link

good thing

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 11:34 (sixteen years ago) link

totally agree

i went into destroyer starting w/ rubies and didn't like notorious lightning or your blues half as much

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 11:35 (sixteen years ago) link

so u like the less poppy and more talky part

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 11:36 (sixteen years ago) link

kind of

i like rambling singing + da da das + awesome guitar peels

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 11:38 (sixteen years ago) link

not that the first half isn't also great

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 11:39 (sixteen years ago) link

"this night" is the destroyer record of that formula, i think (destroyer might be trying here to re-create the live atmosphere of that record)

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 11:40 (sixteen years ago) link

"jenny fell like a ton of bricks"
"WHOOOOOOOSH"
"jenny fell like a ton of bricks"
".......WHOOOOOOOOOOSH"

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 January 2008 11:44 (sixteen years ago) link

this is lovely. luscious, like. the tone of the instruments reminds me of In Rainbows but maybe just because ...In Dreams. reminds me of that. the opening song is so great. i'm only half-way through listening, though.

sean gramophone, Friday, 18 January 2008 13:49 (sixteen years ago) link

This album is Mellotron central!

Davey D, Friday, 18 January 2008 16:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Some serious stoner moments in the middle, too...

Davey D, Friday, 18 January 2008 16:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Does it have that shambling 70s rock feel to it, like Rubies did?

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 18 January 2008 16:32 (sixteen years ago) link

v harry nilsson

sean gramophone, Friday, 18 January 2008 16:36 (sixteen years ago) link

That makes it sound v. different from Rubies, which reminded me of 70s Bowie.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 18 January 2008 16:37 (sixteen years ago) link

dunno 70s bowie, really. definitely it's closest destroyer peers are Destroyer's Rubies and This Night. he seems to have worked pretty hard to make it sound pretty.

sean gramophone, Friday, 18 January 2008 16:55 (sixteen years ago) link

the 2nd half is like "rubies" - the song.
the first half is like "your blues" - the song.
the sound is somewhere in like "rubies" with live-vibe.

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link

ok i was way off. having spent more time with it it's not nilsson-like at all, or particularly pretty. in fact, i don't think musically it's that great. jammy in a way that's putting me off right now. lyrics are tops, though, all nonsense and vivacity.

sean gramophone, Friday, 18 January 2008 19:46 (sixteen years ago) link

"shooting rockets" and the last song are dramatic, pretty and somewhat depressing.
i think i'll like this record.

Zeno, Friday, 18 January 2008 23:40 (sixteen years ago) link

"Shooting Rockets" is AWE-SOME

Davey D, Saturday, 19 January 2008 00:18 (sixteen years ago) link

"Libby's First Sunrise" is so good

dmr, Saturday, 19 January 2008 00:47 (sixteen years ago) link

where the hell are you all hearing this?

iago g., Saturday, 19 January 2008 02:57 (sixteen years ago) link

nevermind

iago g., Saturday, 19 January 2008 03:08 (sixteen years ago) link

first response. same wobbly guitar leads, new? use of mellotron strings, not nearly as many girl's names, nowhere near Rubies (except Shooting Rockets)--my ambivalence is sure to turn rapidly to wildly inordinate overpraise upon repeated listens

iago g., Saturday, 19 January 2008 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

the biggest difference between "trouble" and "rubies" is that on this one there are less hooks .but still it's great and very enjoyeble.

Zeno, Saturday, 19 January 2008 17:23 (sixteen years ago) link

nothing is hitting me quite like "painter in yr pocket" or "european oils" just yet.

Simon H., Saturday, 19 January 2008 17:39 (sixteen years ago) link

maybe cause there are almost no hooks, and no catch-phrases..

Zeno, Saturday, 19 January 2008 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

enjoying the 'da-da-duh-duh-da-dee-daa-dada' section of rivers quite a bit

The Macallan 18 Year, Saturday, 19 January 2008 19:03 (sixteen years ago) link

yep. "Rivers" is second best behind "Libby" I think

the lyrics seem more .... straightforward than usual

dmr, Saturday, 19 January 2008 19:07 (sixteen years ago) link

...if u can understand them

yeah, i've googled this forum too..
aside from body builder,it's a well known fact that Destroyer is also popular among accountants and bridge players

Zeno, Saturday, 19 January 2008 23:47 (sixteen years ago) link

lololol zeno ftw

J0rdan S., Sunday, 20 January 2008 00:43 (sixteen years ago) link

this is growing at me to be the most disturbing, sometimes depressingly serious and maybe the best Destroyer release yet.
getting closer to Reed's "Berlin" and nick cave, and far away from "hunky dory"

http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/s1192657.jpg

Zeno, Monday, 28 January 2008 13:25 (sixteen years ago) link

the sense of depression, surrealism and insanity in this record is rare to find in records, and it strikes with great emotional power.
in short, it's the strongest Destroyer record to date
i really think bejar is in the same league as scott walker, lou reed and nick cave.at their best i mean.

"we live in darkness the light is a dream you see...the light holds a terrible secret.."

Zeno, Thursday, 31 January 2008 16:50 (sixteen years ago) link

one month passes...

After a couple of spins, I don't like it as much as Rubies. It's more bummed out, less ecstatic, less catchy. The song "Shooting Rockets.." is an impressive depressive reverie though - perhaps the one song that best approaches the peaks of Rubies - and there are some pretty, catchy tunes in the first half. The lyrics seem to be struggling a bit on this one.

o. nate, Thursday, 27 March 2008 14:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I just relistened to this yesterday and am trying to figure out why I don't like it nearly as much as Rubies, despite the fact that the sound is fairly similar. I think yeah, it's just a little less catchy.

jaymc, Thursday, 27 March 2008 15:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I also think Bejar doesn't really sell it as much this time - he sounds a bit fatigued, less sure of himself, grappling with doubt.

o. nate, Thursday, 27 March 2008 15:38 (sixteen years ago) link

i think it's actually a bit better than "rubies",BECAUSE it's less catchy

Zeno, Thursday, 27 March 2008 15:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I haven't decided where this places in the Destroyer pantheon yet, but it does feature my new favorite Bejar pun: "I was wringing a bell's neck!"

Simon H., Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I think that to get away with singing nonsense it's important to sound utterly sure of yourself. Bejar pulled this off beautifully on Rubies. But to listlessly and apologetically sing nonsense wears on the listener's patience.

o. nate, Thursday, 27 March 2008 17:01 (sixteen years ago) link

one month passes...

This has grown on me a bit, esp. "Rivers". I still don't like it as much as Rubies though.

There was an interesting Q&A with Bejar on eMusic recently where he said that he was listening a lot to Dylan's Christian-period albums while making Rubies - I definitely hear that in the singing.

o. nate, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 16:08 (fifteen years ago) link

saw him last week on tour for this record, it was one of the best shows I've seen him play

setlist was mostly This Night / Trouble in Dreams with a couple from Rubies .... any set that ends with Hey Snow White I'm gonna be cool with it

dmr, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

they're not playing anything from Streethawk or Thief though :/

dmr, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link

ten years pass...

i didn't know what time it was at all

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Saturday, 9 June 2018 00:43 (five years ago) link

yeah, that one always sticks

niels, Saturday, 9 June 2018 12:25 (five years ago) link

the Rubies - Trouble in Dreams combo remains my favorite era of Destroyer by far
