If I have a real complaint it's that "He's Kissing Christian" is boring, thematically anomolous and feels like it was tacked on just so there'd be a bankable single. And its sensibility seems horrible dated/faddish.

i appreciate the straightforwardness of He's Kissing Christian, and the instrumentals. i kno tho, the lyrics/sentiment seem shorthanded, is that a word?

yes there are bunk moments, upon further investigation... but some amazing moments

probably not a significant enough band to be "classic" but I love em. Ditto the upthread remarks about the Waronker solo, good stuff that. Never so popular...

Off the top of my head I am imagining that this came out on DGC at a time when selling 90,000 records was enough to get you dropped (not that this did that, I wouldn't think). At the very least the first album was still going through WEA then (again, if I'm not too mistaken, or if I am it was another major distrib) so it wasn't getting the type of attention at the distributor level that it would get now through a place like ADA (which is indeed the whole point of ADA and those types of distributors). At the very least, it is imagined that an ADA rep is more likely to have heard of (or even heard!) Charlie Haden, for example. One of those records that companies like those were invented for, but unfortunately at the time when it really counted (on the debut), they were behind Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Urge Overkill and probably even Sloan on the roster's foodchain (if not behind others as well). Good job finding them!! :-)

eight months pass...

I just realized after all these years that the song "Retreat From The Sun" is an answer/followup/homage to the VU's "Who Loves The Sun."

At least when they sing "Su-u-u-u-u-u-n"

I love the song on the last Say Anything album where Anna Waronker sang "Juicy" on the bridge.

one year passes...

Wait until you hear 'Retreat From the Sun'.

Which I'm finally doing. It's quite good.

ten years pass...

I saw these guys at the Whisky a go go before or just after their first album dropped (so 93 or 94). Probably supporting someone slightly bigger. Cranes perhaps? Any idea?

So happy to see the love for That Dog here. I had the albums back in the day and loved them, but zines were slagging them for being daughters of music stars (jealousy?), which annoyed me greatly.

I mean, nepotism's a thing and it didn't hurt them.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 July 2019 16:07 (four years ago) link

I saw them on tour supporting the Wallflowers and the Counting Crows but that was definitely after 94.
