DESTROY: "Why I'm Glad the Space Shuttle Blew Up"

eleven months pass...
While going through my CD collection with a fine toothed comb for things to sell, I came across one that had collected dust for several years called Witch Trials from 1980. I remember jumping at the chance to buy this CD many years ago simply on the grounds that back in the days before CD's, it was nearly impossible to find on vinyl. Anyway, it was the only one in a rather large stack of CD's I decided to play before selling that I decided to keep right away upon playing it. I was rather amused to learn that both Adrian Borland of The Sound appeared on this as well as Morgan-Fisher. These were surely two people I never expected to be in a studio with Biafra, ever. The music is electronic doodling, spooky, like early Cabaret Voltaire or even the Gadgets. And Biafra's weirdness of lyrics/vocals just goes right along with the eerie WTFness of the music. A marriage made in heaven.

search for his cover of "plastic jesus" with mojo nixon.
also the stuff with the melvins, which is totally blazingly kickass punk rock loud loud loud fury.
and the no wto trio. it's a very exciting live recording.

my punk rock claim to fame: i was really involved in the campus green party in the 2000 elections, and we brought him to speak at my school. we took him out to dinner afterwards, and the only place open was denny's. he ate my fries. he also pissed in an empty water bottle before his lecture, so he didn't have to go out through the auditorium to the bathroom. bottle of jello biafra piss. yep.

The scab DKs can not sue Jello or anyone for playing DK material live. They could only sue if Jello started his own Dead Kennedys toured under that name.

And yes, Jello still rocks it live. He sat in with my band last month in Oakland wearing a pope's hat and a judge's robe. It was a good look for him.

New Full-Length Album From Jello Biafra On April 2, 2013

Alternative Tentacles is proud to announce the April 2nd release date for Jello Biafra & the Guantanamo School Of Medicine’s highly-anticipated new album White People And The Damage Done.

White People And The Damage Done (Virus 450) is the band's second full length, picking up where last fall’s “Shock-u-py!” left off. This long-awaited anti-austerity blast-a-thon with the teeth, venom, and one-of-a-kind music of Jello Biafra covers in gruesome detail: corruption (“The Brown Lipstick Parade”), “Werewolves of Wall Street,” “Road Rage,” and corporate McMedia making pop stars out of small-time crooks to shield the big ones (“John Dillinger”) or tabloid pop stars to lobotomize everyone else (“Hollywood Goof Disease”). The title track shines a light on our never-ending foreign-policy disasters in ways Jello’s spoken word albums never did. “Crapture” is the perfect song to play for those lovely “End Times” believers, pointing out how much better the world will be when they leave and we’re “Left Behind”- with melodies on the scale Biafra hasn’t touched since “Moon Over Marin.”

Listen to the preview track "Werewolves Of Wall Street" here: http://goo.gl/BBz4r

After 30 plus years, Jello Biafra’s music and lyrics remain in a class of their own. This is his 1st concept album since “Frankenchrist.” Anyone interested in Dead Kennedys won’t be disappointed to hear how Jello has not changed with the times. Biafra has continuously spoken the truth and has never waivered from his principles. Jello Biafra is more relevant now than he has ever been!

Above all, this album rocks! No pop-punk here. Jello and crew take punk fire in a wide variety of directions few ever try, with wall-of-sound, in-your-face production from Marshall Lawless and Matt Kelley (lots of Jello projects, Hieroglyphics, The Coup, Digital Underground, Zen Guerrilla, Victims Family). Lineup retains the double-barreled guitar attack of Ralph Spight (Victims Family, Freak Accident) and Kimo Ball (Freak Accident, Griddle, Mol Triffid). They are joined this time by bassist Andrew Weiss (Rollins Band, Ween, Butthole Surfers, and more) and drummer Paul Della Pelle (Helios Creed, Nik Turner’s Space Ritual, and Philly HC legends Ruin).

Winston Smith’s cover image is hard to forget and hard to ignore- one of his best in years!

Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School Of Medicine will be touring through most of 2013 on at least 3 continents to promote this beast. The live shows are the real deal. If you like OFF! or Dead Ending, for crying out loud don’t miss this!

This is not just an Age of Austerity album. It is THE Age of Austerity album!

This album kinda sucks unfortunately. The band sounds really stiff, the guitar sound is mostly rubbish slick distortion. There are some good songs on it, I think the production lets it down the most. Lyrics are a bit trite in places too, it's all angry and going for all the targets you'd expect but the wit isn't there in a lot of it.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 8 June 2013 00:35 (ten years ago) link
