Yeah, how cheesy of her to write "ye" in emails... she should say stuff like "OTM" and "grebt" instead. Because there's no way her mailing list could have any in-group affectations or anything.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 25 April 2003 04:13 (twenty years ago) link

ah, but nicole, aren't you thinking of sinead's "retirement" in the same vein as the "retirements" of david bowie and gary numan? unlike those two, i hope this isn't a "retirement" but the real thing ... not that i'd really notice or care to notice, since she hasn't done anything listenable since 1990.

(the skepticism here i think has to do with ms. o'connor's well-known tendency towards shrill drama-queenery.)

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 25 April 2003 04:19 (twenty years ago) link

I challenge you, Hazel, to cite a single post I've ever contributed to ILM wherein I've employed such mirthlessly in-jokey terminology as "grebt" and/or "otm."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 25 April 2003 05:41 (twenty years ago) link

Umm, didn't the record-buying public (or rather the non-record-buying public) already announce her retirement about 8 years ago?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 25 April 2003 05:56 (twenty years ago) link

She does an amazing vocal on "1000 Mirrors" from the new Asian Dub Foundation record. Seek the 'Visionary Underground remix'!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 25 April 2003 06:14 (twenty years ago) link

Wow, I was challenged. But really, what's with all the Sinead hating? She's thanking her fans on her own fan forum. Surely you understand the difference between that and a press release?

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 25 April 2003 06:34 (twenty years ago) link

I think she's being sincere. It's a shame she's not going to be making any more records, but if she wants to be left alone, fair enough.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 25 April 2003 07:23 (twenty years ago) link

Wasn't this statement more than three weeks too late?

I mean, it's been some time since 1. April now...

In the light of the above, we, the undersigned would also like to announce our retirement from the music business. Please can we ask that you respect our privacy as we make that awkward transition from international superstars to workaday plebian Joes (like yourselves). If you see us on the street, no matter how hard it may be, please please just walk on by.

NONE OF YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE UNDERSTAND.

It's an Irishism yeah. I have to say her comments about "leave me alone" show an abysmal level of arrogance which she acknowledges herself with the lame disclaimer about "this isnt meant rude".

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 25 April 2003 10:19 (twenty years ago) link

This still won't get the Asian Dub Foundation single in the top 40.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 25 April 2003 11:42 (twenty years ago) link

I'm going to rip her picture in half.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 11:54 (twenty years ago) link

apparently Sinead O'Connor first retired from the music industry around ten years ago.

I wonder is her current retirement linked to the way no one buys her stupid records any more?

this is all a bit like the way Sinead O'Connor at any given moment has just come through a bad patch but is now alright.

any woman who voluntarily copulates with arch-reactionary John Waters (not the film maker) needs a lot of help.

Sinead O'Connor announces retirement.... about 15 years too late

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 25 April 2003 14:35 (twenty years ago) link

There's a certain passive-aggressiveness about publicizing your retirement and then telling everyone to leave you the hell alone. Does anyone really believe in celebrity "retirements" anymore?

mike a (mike a), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:09 (twenty years ago) link

I was just amazed to find that her retirement was "posted on Sinead O'Connor's fan forum" - she still has fans!?!?!??!!

Leave me alone all of ye, but don't ye ferget t' buy me DVD when I release it.

Her collaboration with Natacha Atlas on Atlas's new album is Most Grand and I liked what she did on the recent Massive Attack. I honestly haven't followed her in the slightest for years but I very much enjoy the fact that she just seems to keep on keeping on.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 26 April 2003 16:26 (twenty years ago) link

I totally agree with what Davlo said. If she wanted to be left alone, then she shouldn't have said "OH OH BUT FIRST BUY MY NEW ALBUM AND DVD, BUT IF YOU SEE ME IN THE STREET DONT PRETEND YOU KNOW ME CAUSE THAT PISSES ME OFF."

Last I saw of her, she became a preist or something? Eh, at least she's not boring. Honestly, the new wave of pop stars lack so much charisma compared to people like Sinead and Prince and MJ.

I also noted that, for someone who claims to have written at least half of her first album by the age of 15, she lacks anything even the most basic grammar skills.

PS. This made me laugh:

Yeah, how cheesy of her to write "ye" in emails... she should say stuff like "OTM" and "grebt" instead. Because there's no way her mailing list could have any in-group affectations or anything.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 3 May 2003 13:08 (twenty years ago) link

GOD DAMN WRITE! If she didn't want to be famous when she was 36, then WHY THE HELL did she start her singing career at age 14?!?!

Great logic. Hypocrisy? I think not. I'd love nothing more than to make money off music and be left the fuck alone in real life. In order to do that, it seems you need to wear masks and use fake names like the Residents. Must get tricky copyrighting stuff privately under a pseudonym.

To all of the people who left negative comments about Sineåd: I think if you watched the VH1 behind the music episode of hers you might gain some understanding of her and realize that music was her way to get out of the hell she was living in. We all deal with the horrors of our childhoods differently, some people take a chance and try to better themselves and help other people in a posotive way by writing beautiful songs or taking an unpopular stand. Other people choose to sit on the sidelines of life and critisize everyone who is doing something. It is very easy to hide behind a computer keyboard and be critical.

You always know a newbie to ILM from comments like "It is very easy to hide behind a computer keyboard and be critical." ..like, no shit.. That's why we do it. If we had any real motivation, we would be working.

Yeah, Alex in NYC, you heartless wench.

Please, Ned, my hate-plate is full right now. I'm too busy being demonized by frothing DMB fans to re-direct my attention back to this ancient debacle. One customer at a time, please.

For what it's worth, at least Sinead made interesting music once upon a time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:22 (twenty years ago) link

I'd have to lose a bit of weight to be able to hide behind a computer keyboard.

I think if you watched the VH1 behind the music episode of hers you might gain some understanding of her and realize that music was her way to get out of the hell she was living in.

I don't think anyone's decrying Sinead's troubled life, it's merely her ludicrous, self-serving, contradictory and utterly presumptious open letter that's the subject of ridicule here. However Sinead feels she needs to handle her demons is her own business, and good luck to her, but please....she should've thought twice before hocking up that dollop of phlegmy malarkey.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

"Dollop of Phlegmy Malarky"
A great lost romance novel of the early 1860s. Worlds better than "Spoot of Wooten Manor" or "Dulcinea and The Naughty Pewtersmith"
