More likely still that Vito typed "Aeroplane album" into Twitter. I just tried that and everything prior to his now famous tweet is uniformly negative.

The thread I saw on Erol's forums looked like it was written by 17 year old electro fans. One guy's main complaint was that there were too many instrumentals on the album.

groovypanda, Friday, 30 July 2010 20:01 (thirteen years ago) link

They are written by 17 y.o. electro fans. But that, unfortunately, is the market most people seem to be shooting for.

I didn't see this mentioned above, but here is Stephan's first mix as The Magician. I'm only about 5 minutes in and it's pretty good. For those of you crushed by We Can't Fly maybe this will help you feel a little better.

"return to form" etc. Especially liking that odd italo version of Yalla Yalla wtf but pushing my buttons, natch.

loooove this 'magician' mix, great track selection. makes you realize that there are plenty of people out there making the type of music i think most of us expected to be on the album. that ali love "smoke and mirrors" track is so excellent, same with "chain of diminishing returns" from a prior aeroplane monthly mix. also there is always classixx to fill this niche

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 01:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow. That's the best monthly mix in absolutely ages. Wonder if it's a bit of a reaction to the reception the album got.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 07:39 (thirteen years ago) link

almost finished the mix. love it. i mean, they're never great in terms of the actual mixing part, but really i suppose it's just a showcase of tracks rather than showing off dj proficiency.

chromeo remix sounds exactly as it should, which is great, because i hate that breakbot remix

haido, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:22 (thirteen years ago) link

That Lindstrom remix of the Chemical Brothers track is everywhere right now, not sure what I think of it.

I love Chemical Bros Swoon. I love Lindstrom & Prins. I do not love that remix. ::sadface::

Official remix of Faith by George Michael!

piscesx, Monday, 23 August 2010 11:42 (thirteen years ago) link

It's becoming more and more clear to me that we, as a people, severely overrated Aeroplane from the beginning. In what world is that George Michael remix anything more than "zzzzzzzzz"? But because we just got done hearing a terrible album, the remix seems brilliant in comparison.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 August 2010 15:15 (thirteen years ago) link

doesn't seem to build with the song at all. it must be an existing track with vocals dumped on it.

nakhchivan, Friday, 27 August 2010 01:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Nice mix but it kind of blended into the background at work today.

To Vito's credit, whenever I download the individual songs they seem to be far worse in isolation. Montauk's Holiday was very effective in one of the recent monthly mixes and by itself is super boring and repetitive.

skip, Friday, 27 August 2010 02:02 (thirteen years ago) link

yes, this mix is ace

dayo, Friday, 27 August 2010 02:11 (thirteen years ago) link

haha having read back some to discover how hated this is, but then i can skip the tracks that start off annoyingly w/out feeling dreadfully disappointed (not quite tabula rasa since i know a few remixes but completely uninvested in them)

the total absence of restraint is kinda endearing

nakhchivan, Friday, 27 August 2010 02:37 (thirteen years ago) link

i assessed the album. it's sweet. slow it down like 10% and it's the exact mastery OPN drops on his games mixtapes ok

fennel cartwright, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 08:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Montauk's Holiday was very effective in one of the recent monthly mixes and by itself is super boring and repetitive.

Montauk had much better songs when they first started (see "Speed of Light"), but they've gone the wrong way since then.

WARMER MIXTAPES #237 | by Stephen Fasano [The Magician]

This is my Top 10 favourites songs EVER!

1. Jacno | Rectangle
This track remind me when I was young boy. I remember, it was taken for a chocolate-milk advertising in France around 1979. Unfortunately, Jacno just died last year.

2. M&G | When I Let You Down
Probably the best Italo-Disco track ever made. I've heard it for the first time on a BASF tape mix that my uncle has made. I was 8 or something. A bit later he gave me the record. I'm still playing it!

3. The Beach Boys | God Only Knows
Best voice/chorus ever. I think if I had the choose to take just one song on a desert island, that would be God Only Knows.

4. Aphex Twin | Alberto Balsalm
I'm not really onto Aphex Twin in general but this one is just fantastic!

5. Fiction Factory | Feels Like Heaven
I was listening to this in the Ford Mustang of my dad when we went to the Belgian coast. A fantastic souvenir!

6. Q. Lazzarus | Goodbye Horses
EMOTION!

7. The Visitor | Expedition Adam 84
From a Czech Sci-Fi series from 1984.

8. Jeanette | Porque Te Vas
I could say that it's the most POPular song I love.

9. Lucio Battisti | Ancora Tu
Italia! My roots...

10. Alba | Only Music Survives
This song is so intense... I play it to finish my djsets.

Stephen was the half of Aeroplane.

Aeroplane
We Can't Fly
[PIAS; 2010]
4.4

For the past couple of years, Aeroplane have been the best kind of music geek secret. A pop-disco production duo from Belgium, Aeroplane have released a sporadic but endlessly enjoyable stream of singles, remixes, and collaborations since 2007. It was a bit heartbreaking when Vito De Luca and Stephen Fasano announced their breakup this summer; they cited artistic differences (De Luca will carry on as Aeroplane). We Can't Fly will make you believe those artistic differences were real. A schizophrenic and ultimately confused record, We Can't Fly abandons Aeroplane's airtight constructions for loose, haughty tracks that are as unclassifiable as they are messy.

We Can't Fly has the feel of a record that's to be everything to everybody-- hit receptacle, compendium of past works, exploration-- and as such ends up being nothing. There are splinters of excellence: the title track weaves an unexpectedly skankin' guitar part into gospel chants, big-rock piano bridges, and miles of keyboards. It's the antithesis of so many disco-as-savior anthems; you will nod and chant to our collective failure. "Good Riddance" and "Without Lies"-- a strange country amble and a sassy pop gem, respectively-- suggest the range and diversity of Ze Records (a clear influence), though "Good Riddance" mostly serves to remind that those Mutant Disco comps had some real clunkers.

The misses miss big, and perplexingly. "I Don't Feel" splits the difference between Guitar World riffing and Patti LaBelle to disastrous effect. "The Point of No Return" auditions for Top Gun montages past and future; "Fish in the Sky" for Bowie's mid-90s blind spot. This from a band who had shown commendable restraint-- no wailing divas or 22-minute Kraut-funk jams; just tight, languorous bodyrock. It's not that these songs are gregarious, silly, and overstuffed-- we suspected Aeroplane had that in them-- it's that they are charmlessly so. "I Don't Feel" will fit most people's definitions of Bad Music, but more troubling is the existence of a giant, wailing barnburner that acts dressy and prim. Aeroplane aren't big personalities or great wits, so when they jostle and play it always feels like the joke's on us.

Aeroplane seem to know a bit about artifice-- the serrated hook of "Without Lies" imagines a boring world without artists-- but We Can't Fly doesn't see them inhabiting unexpected personas or adopting new voices. It feels like fucking around, like a definitively non-definitive remnant of a partnership. We Can't Fly's stylistic knuckleballs lack just about everything we'd grown to love about Aeroplane: namely luxurious grooves and effortless cool.

It's hard to disagree with anything in that review except the bit about "I Don't Feel" being Bad Music. Once you get acclimated to the the dueling vibrato in the first minute it's actually a solid track. Then again I can't imagine putting it on a mixtape intended for, well, anybody.
