I keep restraining myself from starting a ILM thread called "creatively bankrupt newish music critics whose memes are just adolescent elitism".

I think that every time I read it. Either post it or don't but don't write it in some other thread where it won't be hard for ppl to put 2+2 together. BTW - this isn't in reference to any one post in particular but rather to the idea in general.

this should probably be an automatic ilx objection signature by now

schlump, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:46 (thirteen years ago) link

there are many reasons why you wouldn't post something - i think people who think this thread is a dick move aren't seeing this thread in the spirit in which it was created (i think) - i mean, there's definitely potential for using it for passive-aggressive purposes, and considering the history and nature of ilx, i can understand why someone might instinctively think "dick move" about it - but it's pretty much a conceptual thing

You know why you shouldn't use the word "rape" quite so casually?

It's not that you are going to cause some mysterious ineffable airborne "offense".

But because, if you are in a group of four or more people, given that the statistics are, that one in four women in their lives will or has been raped, the chances are, that one of those people is going to step back and think "wow, thank you for just totally trivialising this awful and horrible and possibly violent sexual assault that I went through, by comparing it to, like, a bad haircut or a strenuous workout. That makes me feel really great inside, and chances are actually quite good that talking about the event in such a casual manner, and dismissing my experiences in that way has a really good probability that I'm going to be blindsided into spending the rest of the afternoon in a really unpleasant and unhappy place, mentally, and bringing up a whole host of stuff I really didn't want to think about, or maybe I would have like to have been prepared to think about."

It's not that the trivial use of the word "rape" is somehow mysteriously *responsible* for more rapes occuring (though I would say it's linked to a rise in general misogyny or general backlash acceptance of misogyny - and actually this is linked both to incidence of rape, and how rape is reported and handled) it's that it makes some of us feel really seriously quite awful in a way that you can't really compare to a bad haircut or a strenuous test.

And maybe you should think about that, before you assert that your right to use language in whatever way you see fit regardless of however "offensively" other people you take it, is more important than the right for one in four women or whatever to feel, you know, comfortable in their own skins. Because your mileage may *considerably* vary and you might like to think before you speak and be, you know, just a generally better and more sensitive human being?
