Anyway, I found a zip file of some demos, etc people have collected from over the past year or so. I vaguely remember hearing about her a LONG time ago, when she was still just a Myspace buzzword, but I don't remember if I actually listened to anything on her streamer.

Some of this stuff is good ("Femme Fatale" for sure), and some of it is really, really underdeveloped ("Almost"). afaict, this album could go either way.

it says a lot about the current crop of pop stars that i find myself interested in ferreira pretty much on the basis of not hating her immediately, à la katy perry or ke$ha. "one" is ok, i guess.

though i definitely think "17" has more to it

i don't think anything i've heard warrants any ~FUTURE OF POP~ talk, it's all much of a muchness except "17" is catchier

Oh yeah, despite starting the thread, I don't expect her to take the wheel and steer pop in an altogether new direction. tbh, I haven't heard enough of what she's written yet to even know if she's a solid bet or if she's patchy. I do like "One" and "Femme Fatale," though, and those are incredibly different types of songs. otoh, if it's true that "Obsession" is a Ryan Tedder composition, I can just about already predict what it will sound like. She's probably wise to distance herself from it in advance, and that indicates to me she's pretty aware of what she's doing and knows she might have to do grunt work a couple times to get to a better place.

I'm surprised the one you like is "17", lex, given how much she sounds like La Roux in the chorus.

that one song is pretty decent but this is all a bit little boots or whatever all those other chicks whose names i cant remember are. dont really get how she is a breath of fresh air or anything. she looks a bit like a young brooke shields though. Bloodshy and Avant are awesome when they get it right but their failures are so horrible, i mean that they get it right on that One track btw. Hi!

Little Boots always seemed like an empty vessel to me, but SF has more personality maybe? In fact, three years on, I still don't know anything about Little Boots other than that she plays with some kind of light board and that she can be a bitch.

i dont really know how much leverage you really have to blow fresh air into the music biz w/ ur sassy attitude when you're in a the type of position she is wrt major label grooming; being 17

"One" is seriously addictive.

My favorite part (that's not the hold & repeat effect on specific words) is the little ascending and descending sequencer part the runs throughout the song's chorus. Very cool.

There's a bit in Entertainment Weekly's current issue on her (hype watch!) which says "Obsession" is kind of a jock jam custom made for sporting events and the like. I know she's a smartass, though, so hopefully she's kidding.

there's a short clip of the song up on amazon.com and i am mortified to report that she wasn't really joking. there's a lyric about wanting her name on the marquee.

like at least when i heard "tik tok" for the first time (around this time last yr) i was slightly horrified but could at least tell it had potential to be massive... this sounds like mike posner's single or sumshit

I've just listened to another Greg Kurstin track called "Sex Rules". It's got all those little bleeps and stuff Kurstin is so fond of. Good tune too, IMO. The one issue I have with it is I don't think it suits Sky's voice at all.

kk just heard "sex rules" which was very easily googlable. good tune and nice production, yes. i agree that her voice doesn't sound just right for the track as it is right now, but i'd say it's still a step up from "obsession" in that regard, or at least what we've heard of "obsession."

Yes, and I've read the album version actually sounds very different from the leak, so hopefully they've fixed it. "Obsession" sounds awful, but I'm actually starting to get excited about this album.

"obsession" samples gary glitter's "rock and roll part 2," apparently, so yeah they're definitely trying hard with the whole sporting event thing. the video should portray her as a desperate cheerleader tbh.

And American labels wonder why they have a hard time selling records...maybe it's because they coerce new artists into recording tracks against their will that some focus group has determined will be in the Top 10.

So is "One" actually officially available? I can't seem to buy, borrow or steal an actual mp3 (there's one poor, watery mp3 that sounds like it was ripped from either vinyl or youtube).

It was ripped from youtube.

The single is officially released in September. Have no idea why they waited so long between debuting the video and putting up the mp3 for purchase...other than to make people REALLY WANT to legit mp3. In which case, their plot worked.
