Sky also said she wanted to cover "Cinderella" by Britney

I have an iTunes playlist called "That Feeling" (Tape Store), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't know that song, but if she did it Siouxsie-style I'd be into it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh I'm not saying the list is bad at all!

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:06 (thirteen years ago) link

that list kind of makes me not like her.

aborted based fetus (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:06 (thirteen years ago) link

well u did say it was typical hipster fare/stuff she was told to like which is like not a glowing review of the list

janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:07 (thirteen years ago) link

not that the artists on there are bad or anything, it's just that compiled together... http://cpuwiz.com/smiley/rolleyes7cm.gif

aborted based fetus (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:08 (thirteen years ago) link

...it's just a little too "stuff that's cool to like in 2010" that's all.

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:09 (thirteen years ago) link

she's a teenager!

J0rdan S., Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:09 (thirteen years ago) link

lol at it being cool to like Hall & Oates in 2010

aborted based fetus (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:10 (thirteen years ago) link

lol it is tho

janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:10 (thirteen years ago) link

totally!

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:10 (thirteen years ago) link

i've heard at lesat 3 random hall and oates refs in the past year

janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:10 (thirteen years ago) link

In one list, she namechecked the twins from Suite Life, Deerhoof, and Buffy Saint Marie. That's too real to be sculpted by any PR team.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Anyway, she writes good songs (not named "17" anyway), and I'm sure she didn't pull ideas out of thin air. She's probably a crate digger.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:12 (thirteen years ago) link

17 has potential but it's not right

janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm hoping 17 was a misdirection and not an archetype.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:15 (thirteen years ago) link

it's not very subtle

janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:16 (thirteen years ago) link

lol

janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I think I like this one too

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Stand Back definitely deserves a good present-day cover, maybe even by Sky Ferreira, but this one was done ALL WRONG.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:32 (thirteen years ago) link

It's a cover? That's why it sounded so familiar!

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, Stevie Nicks.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Aha, you're right, the original is much, much better. Still like the Sky one though.

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Whoever produced the Sky cover is obviously more rooted in club production than radio production. That BOOM BOOM BOOM beat sort of bludgeons all the charm out of it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:43 (thirteen years ago) link

"one" is terrific. i totally wrote off sky at first when i saw "17" playing on mtv, but wow, "one" completely changed my attitude about her. i hope the album is good!

and yeah, it seems like they're doing the ke$ha/"tik tok" approach for "obsession" -- build profile 'organically' via internet/myspace, etc., then unleash guaranteed-smash single late in summer, release officially a bit later, then let it slowly conquer airwaves just in time for the enormous post-christmas sales. it's probably a fucking dr luke/benny blanco prod. smh. (i was listening to the radio on the way home tonight and heard three dr. l/bb produced songs back to back. that is fucked up.)

and yes "alejandro" is wonderful

teledyldonix, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:46 (thirteen years ago) link

the rumor is that it's ryan tedder and that sky hates ryan tedder

I have an iTunes playlist called "That Feeling" (Tape Store), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:49 (thirteen years ago) link

ALL RIGHT THINKING PEOPLE ON EARTH HATE RYAN TEDDER.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:50 (thirteen years ago) link

yes

I have an iTunes playlist called "That Feeling" (Tape Store), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm anticipating the Paul Epworth tracks.

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Apparently, that Stand Back version posted above IS a remix. I'm hunting up the original vsn now (hoping it's not disappointing).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I actually appreciate that it sounds a little like really late-period Talking Heads, especially during the verses. Her vocal and numerous overdubs are fine, but it's probably best this never gets a commercial release.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:05 (thirteen years ago) link

You mean as a single? I think it would still make a decent album track.

daavid, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:09 (thirteen years ago) link

tape store back me up on alejandro sucking pls? just so i'm not the only one?

janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:12 (thirteen years ago) link

thx

janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:12 (thirteen years ago) link

xxpost ...may need a little more work.

daavid, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Alejandro is grebt.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Anyway, I found a zip file of some demos, etc people have collected from over the past year or so. I vaguely remember hearing about her a LONG time ago, when she was still just a Myspace buzzword, but I don't remember if I actually listened to anything on her streamer.

Some of this stuff is good ("Femme Fatale" for sure), and some of it is really, really underdeveloped ("Almost"). afaict, this album could go either way.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:17 (thirteen years ago) link

i've got yr back, surm

I have an iTunes playlist called "That Feeling" (Tape Store), Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Okay, her weird cover of "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" over a recycled Dr. Dre beat is novel at least.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:19 (thirteen years ago) link

her vocals are great on that

I have an iTunes playlist called "That Feeling" (Tape Store), Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:31 (thirteen years ago) link

"Phil Collins. Not really because of his music, his songs somehow come up every dramatic aspect of your life. F'rillz."

jesus fuck, someone kill her.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:02 (thirteen years ago) link

it says a lot about the current crop of pop stars that i find myself interested in ferreira pretty much on the basis of not hating her immediately, à la katy perry or ke$ha. "one" is ok, i guess.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:22 (thirteen years ago) link

though i definitely think "17" has more to it

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Please detail the ways in which 17 is not:

lazy
boring
common
pretty bad
all of the above

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:37 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't think anything i've heard warrants any ~FUTURE OF POP~ talk, it's all much of a muchness except "17" is catchier

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, despite starting the thread, I don't expect her to take the wheel and steer pop in an altogether new direction. tbh, I haven't heard enough of what she's written yet to even know if she's a solid bet or if she's patchy. I do like "One" and "Femme Fatale," though, and those are incredibly different types of songs. otoh, if it's true that "Obsession" is a Ryan Tedder composition, I can just about already predict what it will sound like. She's probably wise to distance herself from it in advance, and that indicates to me she's pretty aware of what she's doing and knows she might have to do grunt work a couple times to get to a better place.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm surprised the one you like is "17", lex, given how much she sounds like La Roux in the chorus.

daavid, Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:15 (thirteen years ago) link

lmao, hearing that she may hate ryan tedder is artificially inflating my opinion of her.

teledyldonix, Thursday, 29 July 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Is it really that different if I had posted “this is a cool album” 10 years ago? By that metric every time anyone on ilm has expressed excitement or approval of an album they’re being grating and self-important.

It kind of wouldn’t be ILM at this point if we didn’t have imago arriving on various threads at least once a year after a big poll to bestow his canonical blessings like an off-planet Soto who’s been thawed out from cryogenic deep freeze.

Tim F, Monday, 29 August 2022 19:00 (one year ago) link

Xpost: yes, but she has that chameleonic model thing where depending the era and the photoshoot she looks like different people. I’ve seen photos of her where she also reminds me of Rihanna.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 29 August 2022 19:12 (one year ago) link

Also reminds me of Katherine Langford in some photos.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 29 August 2022 19:17 (one year ago) link

Maybe even like Robert Pattinson lol

But yeah Debbie Harry is the one that comes to mind in overall looks and style.

idk, it really does put to the test the saying, "better late than never".

I don't wear the right robes for bestowing those blessings.

Not just you — this is from the Guardian piece linked above: "In Spain, her extremely low-energy stage presence conjured a vision of Kristen Stewart playing Debbie Harry."

That article also makes it sound like she's still not doing great. If she does actually release the album, I hope she's in a mental/physical state to handle all the stress around it.

unreleased snippet, she's mad at her label not letting her put anything out

ufo, Sunday, 15 January 2023 00:24 (one year ago) link

Why won't Capitol just drop her? I can't think of anyone who's been bound by a contract as long as she's been while the label sits on almost everything she records. 99% of the time they just shelve material and say bye.
