Wow guys so glad you showed up to let us know that "Girlfriend" rips off those other songs, I hadn't heard that.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 23:33 (thirteen years ago) link

its kindof impressive how many okayish songs it rips off and still sounds shit tho

You hear all these hit pop songs on the radio over the past few years and then you see this list and you're like "Holy shit! They were all produced by the same guy?!?!?!" It's the Neptunes all over again!

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 29 July 2010 01:55 (thirteen years ago) link

"Tik Tok" of course.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 29 July 2010 01:57 (thirteen years ago) link

def "Who Knew," i've cried to it!

I have an iTunes playlist called "That Feeling" (Tape Store), Thursday, 29 July 2010 01:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Dr. Luke kinda sucks.

billstevejim, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:04 (thirteen years ago) link

voted "party in the u.s.a." with "behind these hazel eyes" and "tik tok" (i know shaddup) close behind.

i didn't know he did "about you now"! that's a fine song too.

teledyldonix, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:50 (thirteen years ago) link

wow if "tik tok" wins this thing... >>:(

except that the neptunes in their peak were unstoppable and dr luke just needs to be stopped

For what it's worth, aren't the majority of these co-writes/co-produces with Max Martin, among others (but mostly Max)? When doling out credit, I think I'd defer to that dude. Dr. Luke solo (more or less) has done, what, "Party in the USA" and "Tik Tok?" And those are among the most unctuous of the bunch.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 2 August 2010 12:04 (thirteen years ago) link

well, Max Martin did a lot of these songs, yeah, maybe half of them (mostly the earlier ones, plus the more recent Clarkson/Perry ones). I'm inclined to give Dr. Luke more credit for the tunes and the overall aesthetic here, since Martin hadn't been doing much of particular worth for a couple years before "Since U Been Gone," certainly nothing that sounded like it, and since then the only non-Dr. Luke hit he's had that has been anywhere near that good was "So What."

xp .. how is this list of songs even remotely comparable to neptunes '99-'05 ?

Aside from the fact that both producers charted with actual hits.. the similarities end there.

billstevejim, Monday, 2 August 2010 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I think that's what snrub was saying

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Monday, 2 August 2010 17:27 (thirteen years ago) link

well the thing is, when you realised that the neptunes were behind all these hits, you were really impressed and it made you want to check out what they'd done that you hadn't heard. W/ doctor luke you are kind of angry w/ what one man has managed to do to the musical landscape. shitting on its scenic vistas.

plax (ico), Monday, 2 August 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Well yes but that doesn't change the fact that he's epically prominent, which is what snrub was saying

I get the suspicious feeling Martin just stared pawning his demos over to Luke for a polish. Like, per KLF's "The Manual," the only reason Max Martin stopped churning them out was because he got bored of the formula, not because he couldn't, and handing them over to Luke to finish has been his way around the creative burnout, like a lazily symbiotic relationship. 'Cause Luke without Martin (save maybe Flo Rida's "Right Round," which is think is a great production) sort of sucks.

yeah, i mean i like the hell out of some of these songs but this is all pretty unforgiveable, having come from one man

iirc it's pretty much the opposite -- Dr. Luke did simple voice-and-guitar demos for songs like "Since U Been Gone" and "My Life Would Suck Without You," Martin's role was I think more in terms of studio polish and maybe fleshing out the compositions. why would Martin do big blocky synth pop songs for 5 years, and then suddenly start writing chugging guitar rock songs that happen to all have the same collaborator?

'Cause Max Martin's background is in chugging hard rock?

I believe that is Max in the middle.

i'm just saying, it's like assuming Timbaland suddenly started using rave synths at the exact moment Danja started co-producing all his stuff because Timbo just happened to start liking rave synths

The challenge is there's really no control, i.e. much in the way of Dr. Luke all by himself. When I see the name of One of the Most Successful Producers of All Time in the credits, I give said producer the benefit of the doubt.

Dr. Luke’s highest-profile single this year, for Jennifer Lopez, was met with immediate backlash; a song crediting him has not reached the Top 10 this year.

curmudgeon, Friday, 21 October 2016 17:10 (seven years ago) link

this is consistent with Luke seeming to get less and less high-profile work over the past few years (it's weird that people cite the J. Lo single as the beginning; this has been happening for several years), though it's hard to say how much of that is blackballing, how much of that is contractual necessities, and how much of that is simple changing tastes. and... like, it's a J. Lo single, it isn't going to reach the Top 10

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Friday, 21 October 2016 21:14 (seven years ago) link

Changing tastes? Dr. Luke and Max Martin have been ruling the pop music landscape for (checks the release date of "Baby One More Time") seventeen years! And they will doubtless continue churning out hits for seventeen more years. They will never go away.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 21 October 2016 22:51 (seven years ago) link

four years pass...

this is the weirdest fucking take -- denniz pop died in 1998, and virtually all of britney's early-career hits (post-"baby one more time") and most of the backstreet boys and 'n sync's hits were produced by max martin afterward. not sure it's worth rewriting history to play captain save-a-luke

after max's mentor denniz pop died, max struggled to make hits consistently until he joined forces with luke. luke has a great ear for fresh sounds coming from outside the mainstream and a total lack of shame when it comes to appropriating them. they were scammers, not masters
