So I got pumped about getting a new computer game and it runs like shit on my machine.

Seriously nothing has changed for 20 goddamn years.

Don Homer (kingfish), Friday, 30 July 2010 02:07 (thirteen years ago) link

this game is so great! bear in mind i hate multiplayer and will probably never do anything except the single-player campaign.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 30 July 2010 07:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i feel the exact opposite about the single player, i feel like they missed so much fo what has made SP storytellnig better in games over the past... how long ago did HL2 come out? 10 years?

seriously, why is everything in a goddamn cutscene? the in-between levels shit feels almost liek sam and max in its "i guess i am doing sometihng, because i click a thing and then i listen for 45 seconds" nonsense (minus the sam and max jokes-ness of it all). TALK TO ME WHILE I'M PLAYING. it's not insanely hard. to be fair i'm 3 missions in but i have decided i don't give an eff about the cutscenes already, and i am kind of not that dude usually. now i'm pissed that i am missing all of the (enthralling, i'm sure) story.

will this run on my old macbook pro? tf2 is barely playable even with a ton of custom config stuff, hl2 is ok tho

probably not

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 30 July 2010 19:37 (thirteen years ago) link

it might run, but prob not well enough for multiplayer and that's where the fun's at

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 30 July 2010 19:38 (thirteen years ago) link

I am playing it on a 2006 macbook pro and it runs fine on low settings

calstars, Friday, 30 July 2010 22:54 (thirteen years ago) link

nice!

I have to say I really like the trial mode for this- just got a code from a friend, and it looks like it's the whole damn game, just locked to 7 hours of play. Downloading now.

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:19 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, i think trial mode is the whole game. my b.net name is Karl if anyone wants to add me, i just play it at my friend's house tho, so i'm not on that often.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I think to add people you need either:
a) their b.net name AND code (you see your own when you bring up your friends menu)
OR
b) their email addy

about 20 hrs to go!!

Now that I've played more than a hundred games of multiplayer, I find myself falling into a rut of the same build order over and over. I just tried a Marine/Thor combination just to shake things up a bit. Didn't really work.

calstars, Saturday, 31 July 2010 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Um. Wow. Not a multiplayer guy, at least for RTSs, but the single-player in this is great fun. The writing is pretty weak, but the production values are outstanding- you can really see where the gajillion dollars of Warcraft money went.

Anyone want a guest pass? I've got two.

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Sunday, 1 August 2010 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm right in the middle of the gold league, which just shows how many newbies there are out there ( or rusty sc1 vets). During the beta I was in the copper league, 2 divisions below.

the dialog and voice acting in this game cracks me up and makes me all warm and fuzzy about childhood gaming memories. so cheesy! "a couple of badasses like you and me ain't cut out for a normal life" and "friends don't let friends massacre civilians" are just classic video game fun. it just wouldn't be right for it to be well-written.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 09:35 (thirteen years ago) link

agreed. i wish this ran better on my computer tho'.

can't wait to find out if the kerrigan gets redeemed or not!!!

dyao, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 13:01 (thirteen years ago) link

lol the kerrigan. was gonna type 'the queen of blades' but decided it was too dorky but kept the article :/

dyao, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 13:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh thank god, the worst character is dead. Now if only the awful, awful science officer would be next. Everything about him offends me on some deep, primal level- not just the writing and voice actor, but the grotesque character model with his giant piano-key teeth and the little bit of toilet paper stuck over a shaving cut (ew, Blizzard. Just EW).

As of halfway through the campaign, I'm loving the RPG-like elements (persistent research and upgrades, unique units, mercenaries, etc), and while I'm still terrible, it's different enough from proper Starcraft that I'm able to actually enjoy it.

Does anyone know if you can start a new SP campaign on an existing battle.net profile, or if you're stuck replaying missions from the Mission Archive? For my Normal playthrough (yes, I'm on Casual, I suck that badly) I'd like to try some of the other research options, plot branches, etc, and it would be a shame if my profile (which I plan to take online eventually) is locked to one SP playthrough with no reset button.

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Another question for SP people- what research paths are you taking, both on the Spectre/Ghost decision and the Protoss and Zerg tech trees? There are a couple of choices on the Zerg tree that are so useful they seem almost mandatory. Perdition Turrets (for the zombie mission in particular- it's either these or raising/lowering supply depots to make a gate, and I don't like the idea of suddenly losing population cap if they get destroyed) and the dropship (Hellions, iirc- no idea how I would have done the Protoss mothership mission without them). I forget what the other choice for Perdition Turrets slot was (more bunker armor, maybe?), but the alternative to Hellions seems both bizarre and borderline useless- this weird robot cat thing with an AoE stomp against light infantry. It seems like it's an extra unit that just doubles up on what Firebats (AoE vs light armor) and Marauders (slowing effect) can do, except it has to get into melee to do it. Unless they're crazy fucking cheap, I don't het the appeal...

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I havent played much of SP but had a bitch of a time deciding on whether to upgrade bunker armor or get a free gun on top. Went with the armor increase because a marine dont cost much to throw in there and I figured the gun you get with the upgrade probably sucks.

Like what the tree adds to the game. Good work blizzard.

mayor jingleberries, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Unfortunately I can't really play this on my computer. Too many hiccups. Hope they figure a way to console it.

8o---e*.\\\||///.*ə---o8 (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Xpost That sounds about right- maybe the other option was some kind of upgraded missile turret?

I went with the bunker gun. It's surprisingly powerful against light infantry and let's you free up Marines for more proactive manshoot duty.

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I liked how they figured out a way to put a zombie mission in this.

Don Homer (kingfish), Thursday, 5 August 2010 06:59 (thirteen years ago) link

got the key - thanks!!

dyao, Thursday, 5 August 2010 12:57 (thirteen years ago) link

My work situation cleared up yet Ive only played like 1/2 of a mission since. My priorities are all rong.

mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 5 August 2010 17:09 (thirteen years ago) link

this game is great but the singleplayer missions are stressing me out something fierce. Im bad enough with issuing commands and keeping things straight when theres no time limit for impending doom but seems like half the campaign missions are timed. =\

mayor jingleberries, Monday, 9 August 2010 18:09 (thirteen years ago) link

My brother bought this for me for my birthday. Awesome. So, let's set up some matches, shall we? Who's who on battlenet? My email here is the same as my login there.

one month passes...

I have been playing some random FFA games for fun and have twice won because two guys each decided the other was the only threat, spent all their time countering just that one person, and then ignored me while I gathered a bajillion resources and made a magically refreshing army.

Nothing like having someone say "I scouted you and you were a noob!" as you stomp them

Finally made it into Silver League 1v1 after languishing forever in Bronze
