A little off topic, but here is what it looked like when Joel McHale was the lead in the US version of The IT Crowd:

O_o

It is so so wrong. And I say that as a fan of both Joel and the IT Crowd.

ô_o (Nicole), Monday, 2 August 2010 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

It is exactly the same script and seemingly a very similar set and yet it doesn't work at all.

so weird

cozen, Monday, 2 August 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

ugh so wrong. joel is not right as roy and the woman playing jen seems terrible. and why is moss still moss? weird. IT Crowd wouldn't work in the U.S. without script changes anyways, it's too goofy and not edgy enough, it would get canceled after like three episodes.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 2 August 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

It got canceled after one episode as far as I can tell.

i don't think they showed it at all, did they

also basically the whole reason i read cookdandbombd is to see what uk comedians they hate beyond reason and richard ayoade is the most mystifying member of their legion of doom. his voice is funny and he's cuet, i can't imagine where his WHAT A CUNT status comes from and i almost like it better leaving the mystery

A B C, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:05 (thirteen years ago) link

not even that noel fielding kind of "cute" where finding him attractive is carried on the same gene that leads people to seek out libertines fan fiction, dude is non-threateningly dreamy

A B C, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually, I find him kind of annoying, too. It’s the whole Julie Walters “every character must have a funny voice” style of comic acting.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 10:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually, I find him kind of annoying, too

I only know him from Boosh and odds snippets of IT crowd, and yeah it's absolutely the 'voice' that annoys for each character.

i can't imagine where his WHAT A CUNT status comes from

he is successful, cookdandbombd populated by losers

that's true. but he is a rubbish, one-note performer.

I think he is a funny one-note performer.

kind of lol'd at concept of a show that 'isn't edgy enough' for american tv, but i guess it's actually true of 'the it crowd'.

unchill english bro (history mayne), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I dunno, I think IT Crowd and Big Bang Theory are similar in terms of edginess.

Pretty much.

ô_o (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 17:38 (thirteen years ago) link

I didn't mean "edgy" like "innovative." By "not edgy enough," I mean that so much of the humor in U.S. sitcoms is based on sarcasm and verbal irony with undertones of nastiness (basically everyone is dicks to everyone because it's hilarious!) and, with the exception of some of roy's lines, that isn't really evident in the IT Crowd, where most of the characters are basically guileless. This ties in to my old thread about the death of the sight gag - U.S. sitcoms are almost entirely based on verbal humor, you could just listen to the audio and get 95% of the jokes, but IT Crowd actually has a lot of visual humor.

one month passes...

Fortunately, my career didn't jump the shark after "jump the shark." When "Happy Days" ended, I went directly to the ABC Paramount hit show "Webster" and, after that, wrote and produced, among others, "It's Your Move," "He's the Mayor, "The New Leave It to Beaver" and "Family Matters." In 1987, Brian Levant and I created the action comedy "My Secret Identity," which won an International Emmy.

Y'know what? I think I actually met this guy. He was a much earlier alum of the same campus sketch/improv troupe that I tried for write for and eventually took over as producer. I met him at a group reunion something like 10+ years ago.

As far as Jason Bateman sitcoms go, it is a very close second to Arrested Development. Or at least that was my memory of it -- I don't think it has ever even been released on dvd.

I want to be friends with everyone involved with this show.

I'd settle for Alison Brie & Joel McHale.

So the Season 1 DVD set is out today, and they've released a soundtrack for the show (!!) on iTunes. Attempting to take on Glee in their stronghold is pretty bold.

it sucks and you all love something that sucks (reddening), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 08:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Also <3 Donald Glover like everyone else (his physical comedy is kind of brute force/not very finessed, which I dig, cf. the jump onto the lab table in the mouse episode), though some of his tics are clearly cut from the Tracy Morgan mold.
