maybe you're more of a toronto guy?

al gore vidal gore (s1ocki), Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Not so much, but there is nothing I enjoy more than winding up Montrealers about their shitty restaurants.

fields of salmon, Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:25 (thirteen years ago) link

...Whether it's the 1970s throwback "casual dining" or the extortionate, xenophobic "fine dining", fields of salmon is your guide to Montreal's culinary scene.

fields of salmon, Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:28 (thirteen years ago) link

What about a restaurant that serves Pad Thai AND General Tao Chicken. You'd think I'm crazy, right?

fields of salmon, Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:30 (thirteen years ago) link

it doesn't really haunt my days but I guess everyone needs a 'cause'?

al gore vidal gore (s1ocki), Saturday, 24 July 2010 04:12 (thirteen years ago) link

my favourite thing about the pinefox's visit to montreal was def the pinefox. also: aw :)
xp
i'm no foodie, and i don't get wound up abt food (except sushi) but i fully appreciate it when food is good, and i have eaten some good food here, outside the above referenced categories.
ohman i so want to eat a huge plate of qing hua soup DUMPLINGS! right now

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 05:28 (thirteen years ago) link

It must be poutine time out there right about now.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 July 2010 05:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Fuckin' love Qing Hua! Once I am free of my minimum wage shackles I will eat there every other day.

Simon H., Saturday, 24 July 2010 06:39 (thirteen years ago) link

btw anyone who has not been to kazu yet - run don't walk

al gore vidal gore (s1ocki), Saturday, 24 July 2010 14:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Rrrobyn did take us to a Chinese place that wasn't bad! And the White Horse and Black Island bars - those were real good times.

the pinefox, Saturday, 24 July 2010 14:59 (thirteen years ago) link

salmon's "montreal food sucks" campaign is so bullshit.

sean gramophone, Saturday, 24 July 2010 16:08 (thirteen years ago) link

ie, he has successfully wound me up

sean gramophone, Saturday, 24 July 2010 16:08 (thirteen years ago) link

well if all u eat is salmon I definitely wouldn't recommend montreal, feel like that's probably his problem

al gore vidal gore (s1ocki), Saturday, 24 July 2010 16:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Go ahead, eat duck and rabbit while your city collapses around your ears.

da croupier, Saturday, 24 July 2010 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

al gore vidal gore (s1ocki), Saturday, 24 July 2010 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, fuck fiddling. Nero had the wrong idea.

Y /\/\ /\/\ \/ (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 24 July 2010 19:21 (thirteen years ago) link

It suddenly occurred to me last night that I might seriously consider moving back to Mtl in the fall.

Sundar, Saturday, 24 July 2010 19:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh? What's happening here?

FoS wound me up for a second but then I was like "oh yeah, it is kind of collapsing huh" because I'm in my living room and I just looked at the walls in here. This house would be a flop for heroin addicts in any other city in the world tbh. But you can't beat $1200 a month split 4 ways a block away from virtually everything you ever need. Still want to move back to the Mile End though. Like real bad.

Alex in MTL - you are the Alex in MTL I know right? Worked @ CJ-ello? I had no idea you were thinking abt law school?

Cold Poutine, So Hard To Eat (Will M.), Saturday, 24 July 2010 19:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh no! Different Alex in MTL. There was a weird glitch in the ILX system that resulted in me unaware-ingly taking the name b/c you can be "alex in montreal" AND "Alex in Montreal". Been meaning to switch to a new handle to avoid the confusion but \(o_O)/

Y /\/\ /\/\ \/ (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 24 July 2010 19:47 (thirteen years ago) link

that was the real reason behind the Toronto move right

al gore vidal gore (s1ocki), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Lawlex

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:43 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not so much that something's happening in Mtl as that nothing's happening anywhere else. If I have nothing to do, it's best to do it in Montreal.

Sundar, Saturday, 24 July 2010 21:54 (thirteen years ago) link

See you at the needle exchange.

Montreal takes second spot in some sort of "happiest places on earth" list.

must be the food.

yeah, what a weird post eh? like i am not totally sure whether or not salmon is just a non-montrealer sufficiently aware of quebec culture signifiers and slang who's just pulling our leg. some really tasty food around hurr imo. you guys been to cuisine szechuan on guy?

gold bullion logic (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:40 (thirteen years ago) link

cuisine szechuan is probably the reason montreal is the 2nd happiest place in the world

gold bullion logic (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:40 (thirteen years ago) link

I love how all the people on this forum evidently live in Mile End and around Jean-Talon. Those are the sort of anglophones who would say the food is good.

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:09 (thirteen years ago) link

instead of the smart anglophones who know to live where the food is bad

kim cardassian (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:10 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean dude... obv u r not happy where u r... but many ppl clearly are. so maybe u should either move to a neighbourhood that suits u better, move to a city that suits u better, or realize that it is perhaps not the city that is the problem here!

kim cardassian (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:13 (thirteen years ago) link

alternate suggestion: stop eating at cheapass pan-asian fast food restaurants

that applies to pretty much every city

kim cardassian (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:13 (thirteen years ago) link

hrm, i live in st henri and used to live in ndg. ndg had some fantastic restaurants and even st henri has some good food. i don't eat out very often, though, and i've never lived anywhere else so don't take my word for it. took a gander at slocki's blog after a link to a blog post about mangoes and iirc dude is a local restaurant critic so maybe he can shut you up.

gold bullion logic (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:14 (thirteen years ago) link

oh, haha xps

gold bullion logic (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think anyone has said that bad food doesn't exist here. Looking at you, St-Hubert. But the good food is pretty great, and a lot less expensive than other cities in Canada.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:17 (thirteen years ago) link

bad food exists everywhere, with the possible exceptions of france and italy

kim cardassian (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:18 (thirteen years ago) link

fields of salmon i reserve judgment on whether you are a cool guy or not bcuz i don't exactly get what the fuck you're talking about but your posts itt are condescending in a really weird and hard-to-parse way. by all means enlighten us to your next level food criticism, but idg why you are accusing us of living in neighborhoods n stuff

gold bullion logic (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:18 (thirteen years ago) link

there is also a lot of decent food in verdun! and parc ex! and way out east! sure it's not new york or LA but we also don't have anywhere near that population. anyway, i don't eat out a lot and prefer to make my own lunch *if only b/c like sandwiches and salads are crazy overpriced for what they are, even if 'gourmet' and i can make exactly what i want to eat), but when i do go out i feel like i have an abundance of good things to choose from.

i have yet to go to kazu! o_O
