I think Drake adds a ton of pathos to the track, but you know I like Drake doing in situations like these (and in general). At least he didn't get a verse.

can we talk about chrisette michelle singing about listening to the yeah yeah yeahs on this rick ross album instead

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes, that's what she's singing. And I love how she just like squeezes it in at the very end of her hook.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:20 (thirteen years ago) link

am i wrong to be dumbfounded by that?

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Nah, I didn't even realize it until you pointed it out. Awesome moment.

I can totally picture Rick and Chrisette driving on the highway listening to the YYYs... ok I can't, but that's why it's great.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:21 (thirteen years ago) link

saadiq sounds almost indistinguishable from ne yo on this track

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Ugh. I DON'T WANT CALL-AND-RESPONSE CHORUS WITH RICK SINGING.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:23 (thirteen years ago) link

And Saadiq's voice sounds all pinched and just rubs me the wrong way. And I think Instant Vintage is a classic.

the best hook on the album after "b.m.f." is wiz khalifa singing "smokin them pina colada papers baby girl we don't fuck with them bluuuuuuuuuuuuunts/ unless i'm with the boooooooooooosss"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 July 2010 07:41 (thirteen years ago) link

"super high" beat is totally the shit -- for some reason it just pops more on the remix -- i think that dope live base just sounds... warmer in the context of two stoners rapping about getting super high

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 July 2010 07:43 (thirteen years ago) link

also "trees gets twisted up like fingers and gang signs" is a super dope image from currensy

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 July 2010 07:44 (thirteen years ago) link

also the village voice review of this is great

Pfork did a 180 this morning, after giving low marks to the first two Ross albums and not even bothering with the third:

have to say, of all the people I'm disappointed in for boosting Ross I'm most disappointed in Cohen, who I can usually count on to take down shit rap albums hilariously

yeah before i opened that review i was expecting a HHNF style takedown

game recognize game tho

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:50 (thirteen years ago) link

And he gave Arcade Fire thumbs up yesterday, which was a bigger surprise.

I love this album but not on Ian's terms.

But more importantly, Ross has proven to be among the last of dying breed. His studio albums feel like events that demand the ears and opinions of rap fans.

this is weirdly true

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link

co-sign everything except that Trilla was dope and the first of his event/zeitgeist/barometer of the American moment albums

it's a 3peat

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 16:04 (thirteen years ago) link

teflon don > trilla > deeper than rap

neither of the first two felt like an EVENT like 'teflon don' did tho

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 16:08 (thirteen years ago) link

cuz HE'S BIG MEECH

not really, he likes a lot of bedwetter rock, i only read his rap reviews most of the time.

so is this guy like the dave edmunds of rap douchebaggery or something? that review seems to suggest we should be glad he's grown into the '90s or something

da croupier, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:04 (thirteen years ago) link

"last of a dying breed" just like the blasters!

da croupier, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:05 (thirteen years ago) link

no i think that would be jeff weiss

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

but ian's pretty close

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

"people would rather miss out on new rap royalty than admit this is about as good as mainstream macho rap gets these days"

The beats on this are so diirrrrrrrty <3 x 1000000

I think one thing ppl are missing in the race to be "OMG HES MC HAMMER MEECH LOL FUCKK HAHAH" is that a lot of his flows actually kind of sound like "Lets Get It Started"/"Ring Em" hammer circa 1988

deeper than rap is way better than the other two! and was way more of an EVENT too, when that first joint dropped where hes all 'whistling at wendy williams' or whatever thats when everyone was all "whoa...dude can rap." This record doesnt feel like much of an EVENT at all in comparison

yeah i didnt wanna bat for it what with viewing from a distance but that's how the event status seemed to me too

agree about deeper than rap anyways

although its not like dtr is a great record ether so whatevs

r|t|c, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:28 (thirteen years ago) link

so what is it then?

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:29 (thirteen years ago) link

average - all of ross' albums are shades of average

r|t|c, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:30 (thirteen years ago) link

its an inconsistent one for sure. but ... 'yacht club'

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:31 (thirteen years ago) link

I like Deeper Than Rap better than Teflon Don. I feel like the new one is too ambitious. Peter Principle in action, kinda; on DTR he got as good as he's ever gonna be and had exactly the kind of lush yacht-rap beats he needs. Only "Super High" really maintains that level of lushness.

i heard what i presume to be teflon don booming from someone's car today and it sounded awesome which reminds me i need to hear teflon don

ballerrr (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 07:31 (thirteen years ago) link

if anything, 'deeper than rap' felt like an event record mostly because of his beef with 50

i think the hype surrounding 'teflon don' was borne solely out of the realization that the dude could actually rap

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 08:19 (thirteen years ago) link

did anyone actually care about his beef w/ fiddy?
