Ash, Meltdown
for the line "you want to meet us in confrontation / our psychic weapons will DESTOY YOUR MIND!"

Aarktica, Aura Lee
Mmmm, atmosphere-y.

Guided by Voices, A Second Spurt of Growth
One of the best on the new, and supposedly final, LP.

Puffy AmiYumi, Planet Tokyo
Power-pop-tastic.

Hayden, Home by Saturday
Lovely.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Babe, I'm On Fire
Gloriously indulgent.

Mclusky, Falco Vs. the Young Canoeist
WE'RE GONNA ROCK ROCK ROCK, ROCK WITH THE ROCK

Killers, Mr. Brightside
Just so damn infectious.

Morrissey, The World Is Full of Crashing Bores
Self-explanatory.

Les Savy Fav, Hold On To Your Genre
The most danceable rock song of the year.

Nightwish, "Wish I Had an Angel"
Amy Lee just wishes her band could be this gloriously fun and over the top. But she doesn't have the guts.

Talent Explosion (Talent Explosion), Sunday, 1 August 2004 00:40 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't download music, I don't have access to any of my old mp3s and I have no money for new music. My listening lately has been a retreat into the dark corners of my collection.

Nina Simone, "Save Me"
- When I first heard this I thought she was a dude, and then she seemed somehwere in between a dude and a lady and then -- being as it's quite funky -- I thought she was some sort of alien and this was what they danceed to on other planets. It would make sense, wouldn't it

Belle & Sebastian, "Chalet Lines"
- My brother's girlfriend and I have been tring to convince him of B&S's worth for almost a year now, and today he finally conceded quietly that he "actually really likes them." He's obsessed with Leonard Cohen, so I put on Fold Your Hands... and told him, "Dude, this is like their darkest album." Haha. I still don't have the new single :(

Maurice McIntyre, "Ensemble Love: Life Force"
- As an atheist I don't often relate to the "spiritual" side of free jazz... but it can be really fucking good.

D'Angelo, "One Mo Gin"/Marvin Gaye, "Let's Get It On"
- It was like 5am, really trashed, some dudes are packing up everything they own cos the landlord just told them they have to get out a day early. On the floor there is a pile of pillows/blankets (which we're lying on), a stack of CDs and a stereo. The only thing in the pile that appeals to me as the soundtrack to our sausage party is notoriously seductive mood music. I had never really connected with the Gaye song before, always finding it corny. (the secret is the bass and the way the vocals interact with it.) I probably would have exploded if I'd not picked one of the most homoerotic moments in my life to do so.

Ornette Coleman, "Civilization Day"
- There's this part where the drums drop out and it's nothing but bass and trumpet soloing -- I think it's one of the most energetic moments in recorded music. At the mention of Ornette's name, this is what pops into my head (even though he's not playing ?).

Jay-Z, "Jigga What, Jigga Who (Unplugged)"
- Tim's groove is even more incredible when the Roots get ahold of it. They need to work with a good producer more than anyone.

The Fiery Furnaces, "Quay Cur"
- Last night I got really high.

Bogdan Razcynski, "My Love I Love (track 2)"
- Even though it seems like the tracklist was determined on shuffle, this is one of the most effective "wake up the albums starting after a sleepy ambient track" songs ever.

Lightning Bolt, "Assassins"
- This is sort of the same thing, only they did it on purpose. Also, it kinda hurts for a second, when it's starting.

Simon & Garfunkel, "The Only Living Boy in New York"
- When he sings "Hey, I've got nothing to do today but smile" and you can feel how sad he is, that's what we call good singersongwritering.

big pun - dream shatterer (i'd quote, but then i'd never stop)

dizzee rascal - various things from 'showtime' (still digesting... the title track's a standout for me, though!)

big pun - 100%

animal collective - bat you'll fly (damn hivemind hypemachine - fuck it if i don't like this. and "winter's love" too, phooey. 'baby day' sucks though.)

big pun - we don't care (pun's arrival on the track is straight jawdropping)

az - fan mail (it was a toss up between this and the track where he talks about kissing dolphins)

lil' wayne - snitch (dk's right, he does sound like jay!)

cassius ft. ghostface - thrilla (unless i missed something, we underhyped this, what with the [inferior] streets remix and all...)

basement jaxx ft yellowman - love is the answer (actually not all that great and kind of boringly trad for fake jaxx dancehall except for the bit that sound like those cage compositions for sheet metal, but i wanted to mention its existence somewhere)

daft punk - digital love (it was time for a track without a rapper, plus i've had this in my head ALL day, it was pretty much the only
good thing about it)(my day, that is)

i can't think of anything else, but i'm cheating with the dizzee entry anyway really...

one month passes...
ugk - one day (screwed and chopped) (prob the most moving thing i've heard all year, chalk me up as a late s&c convert).
magnolia - it's all vain (the first song to have REALLY listened to "rendez-vu"?)
kiley dean - kiss me like that (pretty.)
big pun - boomerang
" - you came up
big tymers - in my life
jay-z - my first song (the remix that i think scg posted on goverment names)
propaganda - duel (thanks tico tom)
federation feat keak da sneak, san quinn etc etc - hyphy (one of my favourite beats ever, i've decided.)
i-20 feat ludacris, bonecrusher - break bread

can't think of a last song. lately i'm feeling the need for singer-songwritery stuff, but the problem is i hate just about everything made by singer-songwriters, so there's a bit of a void. what i'm also feeling lately is bad - for pretty much losing touch with local music. i need to start listening to the radio more again. i heard a new single from 'pitch black afro' that was really pretty good, so maybe he's not a one-single novelty, though that would be fine too. yes, we have a hiphop guy called "pitch black afro" here.
