Milquetoast performed by Helmet

a hint?

also, tracks 1, 3, 4 and 14 are OK, the STP song in particular (someday their second and third albums will get the critical rehab they deserve, i swear)

I actually like the NIN cover of Dead Souls on The Crow soundtrack... Oh well.

The Rollins Suicide cover does suck though. And the rest of it (apart from OK songs by the Cure & JAMC) was mostly pretty awful I seem to remember.

mr scratch, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:11 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the jazz-groove of the Rage against the Machine song (that the Arsonists sampled).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:14 (nineteen years ago) link

The soundtrack to Crow II is more consistent (in a good way) (I think).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:15 (nineteen years ago) link

also, the thrill kill kult song off the crow is great. it's no Kooler Than Jesus, but it kicks its share of ass.

[Late to this thread]
stuff listed here that is actually awesome : Judgement Night Soundtrack. And I believe that's it.
I remember first hearing about the NIN cover of "Dead Souls" ... I had a couple of friends who'd heard it on Brave New Waves (CBC radio late night show) and they were going on about how awesome it was, and I was nearly pissing myself with delight. Joy Division? And NIN? This was my 1994 equivalent of Kevin Shields and Christian Fennesz doing an album of guitar noise-laden minimal techno with Richie Hawtin and Rene Loewe.
Was I ever disappointed when I finally heard it. On the slight upside, I did smile inside when I heard the Woodstock bootleg, since the thought of three-quarters of a million wet muddy Americans forced to gather and listen to Joy Division made me proud.

Last Action Hero OST
1. Big Gun - AC/DC
2. What the Hell Have I - Alice in Chains
3. Angry Again - Megadeth

These three are actually great - the rest of that album is obviously unspeakably terrible.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Big Gun is great? I'll stick up for a lot of things, but not that (cue Meat Loaf)

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Best thing on the Judgement Night OST was the Sir Mix-a-Lot/Mudhoney pairing, "Freak Mama". There is no debate. I am right. Save your breath.

Oh Soul Asylum's version isn't bad at all. I have a real soft spot for the No Alternative comp, save for Patti Smith, Sarah McLachlan and Soundgarden's tracks. The rest are mainly ace.

HOW DO YOU TALK TO AN ANGEL

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I try not to think about the song itself, but I find myself referring to unnecessarily sotto voce singers as having "the Jamie Walters voice."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh my god that Patti Smith -- "little emerald bird/don't fly away" or whatever the fuck it was. God was that terrible. The Soul Asylum "Sexual Healing" is not as bad as it sounds, IMO.

going way back for a moment i would just like to say that the velocity girl song on the clueless soundtrack is very good and only available on the EP on Slumberland. Until I found the EP, I taped that song off of someone else's copy of the Clueless OST.

I am surprised at the inclusion of superchunk on some of these, and even more so at all the 4 non-blondes songs. i didnt know they had more than one. also: SPONGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Natural Born Killers OST doesn't really deserve to be lumped in with the Hackers or Crow soundtracks. If I was feeling generous I'd say it's probably the best thing Trent Reznor's been involved in.

9. Run Shithead Run performed by Mudhoney - 2:52

The story behind this one is great, it's in the liner notes to March to Fuzz -- they were contacted by Maverick to contribute a song and were given a clip of the film where they wanted the song to run, which showed one of the heroes (whoever it was) jogging along while 'appropriate' music was temporarily in place as a stand-in -- namely "Unbelievable" by EMF. So Mudhoney recorded this song.
