Hm Sam Hornish was born in the same city I'm currently living in so he'll get sympathy. He'll need it as his car was 3 or 4 mph slower than the pole sitter.

brownie, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 14:38 (sixteen years ago) link

his transition hasn't been the smoothest

Who's Chasing for the Gabbneb Cup? Glad you asked! After Gordon:

Martin - test pilot enthusiasm (and haircut) with real graciousness; too old/part-time to focus on, but you can't not like the guy
Edwards - I like the I'm-just-here-to-race, man demeanor - seems like a pretty smart guy under the business plan; also, reminds me of a really good KS-MO dude I went to school with (not named eddie), at least when he isn't wrecking someone
Shrub - I guess I like the excitable younger guys? his gawkiness and frustration/resignation are kinda laughable/cute, and the kid's got talent
Stewart - hot-tempered heartland culture of complaint guy should be far from my type on paper - Gordon's much more my kinda poster boy - but he can be pretty charming and generous and seems so committed to racing without borders and is too good a driver not to like
Johnson/Knaus - the better half might be a robot, but as above, a sharp one, and i like the understated sense of humor and, well, manners, and anyway I'm too nu-Nascar not to go along here; Dave Matthews and Kenny Chesney?
Said - fuck the ovals; his time coming, any day, don't worry bout him, no
Montoya - fuck the haters; viva la open-wheel reconquista
Burton - more admiration than affection, but seems like such a good dude; my idea of a concession to the roots

on the bubble
Villeneuve - if he makes it this year, I gotta root for a guy named Jacques; could become a favorite
Truex - mid-Atlantic-ish guy can do exciting things under green, but kinda boring outside the car
Raines - if he can get a ride
Junior - a gimme
Sadler - reminds me of dudes I hung out with over summers in DC years ago - v different, but fun; more interesting off the track tho
Mears/Gustafson - too grayscale for his dayglo car, but the flipside of corporate is sharp, and (probably) talented
Reutimann - sunshine coast Jesus freak who I ignored last season turns out to be modestly articulate and could be of interest in the B---- Series this year?

gabbneb, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 06:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Martin Truex Jr. is not boring. He's just chill.

felicity, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 09:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, Marcos Ambrose is on the radar. His Kingsford Charcoal fire car caught on fire in one of the Busch races last year -- I wish I could find tape but NASCAR Now went to town on it. Haitch, I think you can stream races online at NASCAR's web site.

Marcus Ambrose was also leading the Montreal road course race last year until . . .

[Interior, ESPN studio}

ESPN desk (referring to Robbie Gordon): Rusty, have you ever before seen a LAPPED car spin out the leader, drive past the BLACK FLAG, and then do a VICTORY BURNOUT next to the race winner?

[Cut to Rusty Wallace, trackside]

Rusty Wallace: . . . No.

It was punk rock. Zero respect. Suspended for the next race and fined about ten gazillion driver points.

We should talk about burnouts some time.

felicity, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 09:44 (sixteen years ago) link

hahaha, that is hilarious.

daria-g, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 16:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I like those Wagnerian (ahem) burnouts against the wall under the lights.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 23:37 (sixteen years ago) link

burnouts are never, ever, not good.

haitch, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 23:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Have you ever been to a race? What is it like?

I think this video of Fontana captures the flavor pretty well:

Hollywood Nights - NASCAR Style by Low Budget TV

The green flag start in this video is about as thrilling as a Duke-Carolina basketball game in overtime.

Does anybody here follow drift racing? All I know is that they get style points for the drifts and that they use stock Japanese subcompacts.

felicity, Thursday, 14 February 2008 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I saw The Fast and the Furious III: Tokyo Drift. Does that count?

Laurel, Thursday, 14 February 2008 21:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes. Do you recommend?

felicity, Thursday, 14 February 2008 22:04 (sixteen years ago) link

That probably depends on your tolerance for the "American hick in v sophisticated foreign country" act. I liked it alright. Also this is prob cradle-robbing but the lead is pretty cuet.

Laurel, Thursday, 14 February 2008 22:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Thanks, my tolerance for that kind of thing is sky high.

Michael McDonald??? who plans this shit?

Kerm, Sunday, 17 February 2008 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I like 1959 just fine, but that thing started not great and threatened to get worse before I turned it off.

I think I have to scratch the 5 car off my list; dude just doesn't give me the right feeling.

gabbneb, Sunday, 17 February 2008 21:20 (sixteen years ago) link

lolling hard at the carbeque!

haitch, Monday, 18 February 2008 00:16 (sixteen years ago) link

so how about ryan newman then?? i was out and missed the 500 today but still. (I have relatives named Newman so I figured what the heck, if I have to pick a driver.) :)

daria-g, Monday, 18 February 2008 02:33 (sixteen years ago) link

I watched it from start to finish today because a) I live in the South and have never attempted to do it before and b) football's over. Even before the halfway point, I wanted to pluck my eyes out with a hot furnace poker.

he was very emo. i wished they showed more of Gordon's Charlie Rose act. i am still liking MW's commercials this season. failure = funny. carl otoh is in some less agreeable company this year.

due in part to good weather, i am considering putting the 41 on my bubble

maybe I will be less jealous if I... go to the Goody's Cool Orange 500?!

I did not realize that Trisha Yearwood was doing the anthem; sorry I missed that. A real Brooks family affair this year.

pretty good chance I'd get to see my Jeffy win at Martinsville too, as long as he doesn't play too nice again

Yes, you should go to Martinsville, or Richmond if you can. In terms of race atmosphere, Sonoma seems like it would be up your alley, but the viewing is not supposedly not great.

Gordon fan, eh? Very respectable.

Daria, Ryan Newman is a great choice, particularly if you have cousins Newman and like dogs.

oh no! there's white wine with goat cheese and fig jam in the parking lot, i suppose. i once looked up their driving school, but i'm sure i have a very long list of driving skills to confront before i get there. a road course might be interesting.

i stubbornly like nascar by liking all the least-nascar elements best.

Road courses are cool, are they still running the night race @ watkins glen?

I'm not all that far from Richmond but don't think it's one of the more interesting tracks is it? too bad Talladega is as far as it is..

daria-g, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:53 (sixteen years ago) link

not nascar but looks awesome nonetheless

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 19:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Watkins is a day race. Richmond is good racing, IMHO.

felicity, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 19:35 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't prefer road courses, but changing things up is good, and I gravitate somewhat to the guys who have raced outside nascar (and maybe I think of right turns as more authentic?), like I gravitate to guys from outside the South/midwest, not that California isn't just as much a car culture. Unlike my mom, I've liked festivals probably since my dad dragged us to ham radio fairs, but while I have semi-fully partooken of other mass subcultures, I guess I feel this is one I come to as more of an outsider and with a more critical disposition. In a rebel flag culture, I've got my own dissension to wave. Which isn't to say that I'll be flaming out in 24 gear; that's too much commitment too.

Road courses do remind me of pole position, tho, as well as this toy-electric-track-racing place (what are these called?) I went to at least one party at as a kid. And the locations are interesting too - two wine countries and two foreign countries.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I like the road races too. Shakes things up a bit, plus you get to root for guys like Robby Gordon and Scott Pruett who don't have a chance in hell at places like Talladega.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 20:32 (sixteen years ago) link

R. Gordon seems to be moving up in oval races a bit, but I don't think I will be rooting for him.

road courses have all those nice curves too.

Robbie Gordon is a TREAT LOL

felicity, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 23:09 (sixteen years ago) link

lawrence, that 60s Can-Am footage is cool.

Can-Am looks like what would happen if agnes b. and Jean-Luc Godard got together and designed a road course series.

felicity, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 23:23 (sixteen years ago) link

hey I could go to Richmond. how exciting. a night race would involve less SPF, but would it be the same?

the perfect gift for any home

i have determined the above to be a stupid question. maybe i will go to both. i will have to weigh vacation ideas.

Surprise! It's Cousin Douche.

We play a little game for the drivers and crew chiefs called "Douche or Hipster?"

Elliott Sadler: hipster.
Carl Edwards: douche.

n.b., "Douche" does not connote a negative judgment. It's just a descriptor at the opposite end of the spectrum as the "Hipster". (e.g., douches "try.")

Burnout/drift heaven.

felicity, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 20:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Carl seems pretty above it all - not trying - when no one's in his way; like he does all the extra stuff because it goes with the territory of a) racing and b) branding/bizzing, tho maybe they're backwards. I shouldn't have second-guessed myself in putting him above Kyle tho; I like the kid's style a lot more. Also should have stuck with instinct and left McMurray on the bubble. I like him better hatless and he takes Reed's and Reutimann's places.
