I still listen to Hammered a fair bit - it's a good one, except for that poem at the end, which is totally shit but still good somehow. Highlights on that album are the two songs where he's appreciating two sexy women - Dr Love and and Mine All Mine (?). I love Lemmy when he's giving appreciative props to hot biker chicks - clearly the viagra is working.

The newer Motorhead albums are slower, fatter and warmer, to my ears. The songs are as good as ever, and there is the odd surprise - the band will experiment from time to time with multitracked vocals, pitchshifting, death metal
riffs, psychedelic guitar solos, etc.

Another band I think is worth getting back into is Venom - once again, solid, fat riffs, no huge surprises, a smattering of small surprises.

Anybody buy the stupidly overpriced deluxe editions of the early albums? I looked at 'em but couldn't justify it.

gah! fuckin motorhead
saw the lemmy interview in that 'metal: a headbanger's journey' documentary and he talks about the name motorhead being some character from a comic or something?? google not helping here

Meteor Crater (jdchurchill), Thursday, 14 January 2010 00:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought it was a slang term for someone on a speed binge. Which is what he wrote the song about. And eventually named the band after the song.

everything, Thursday, 14 January 2010 00:15 (fourteen years ago) link

ah he mumbles something about a comic character . . .

Meteor Crater (jdchurchill), Thursday, 14 January 2010 00:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Another thing: The current lineup is the best lineup. They've been together for over 15 years now (Phil Campbell's been in the band 24 years!), and they're tight enough and comfortable enough with each other that they can experiment and make it work. The so-called "classic" lineup would never have had the guts or ability to write or record songs like "I Don't Believe A Word," "I Am The Sword," "Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me," "1916," or any of a dozen or more other "hey, that doesn't sound like Motörhead!" tracks they've put out since the early '90s

I'd kinda like to hear a Motorhead (Not Motorhead) comp.

Disco Stfu (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 14 January 2010 00:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Reading the Hawkwind bio - their relationship with Lemmy is hilarious. 'He always had to be right about everything'. How's the new(ish) album Motorizer?

How's the new(ish) album Motorizer?

I can't compare it to recent albums, because I still haven't heard all of them, but it holds its own again the first few. I'd recommend.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 14 January 2010 08:04 (fourteen years ago) link

It charted in the UK apparently. That must be nice for an old Lemster.

moley, Thursday, 14 January 2010 08:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Motorizer rocks. Definitely one of the best of their recent albums.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 14 January 2010 10:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, that album's a lot of fun. Actually their last three have been above average...the band's been on a nice little roll as of late.

03/03/2010Gimme Lemmy! SXSW Interview Wed. March 17
Celebrating the world premiere of the film LEMMY at SXSW, Motorhead's bass-playing frontman sits down for a chat. The living embodiment of rock and roll, Lemmy played with Hawkwind, spent time in Jimi Hendrix's road crew, and formed Motorhead in 1975. For decades, Motorhead has rocked audiences worldwide with maximum volume and no frills. Lemmy's take-no-prisoners approach to rock inspires countless musicians to this day.

The SXSW Interview with Lemmy takes place on Wednesday March 17 at 5:00pm in Room 18ABC of the Austin Convention Center. Share an hour with a truly influential artist. Noted writer and lifelong metalhead Phil Freeman will ask the questions. Music and Platinum Badges are invited, as well as allShowcasing Artist wristbands. Don't miss this ass-kicking event!

earlnash, Saturday, 6 March 2010 02:21 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm sure it'll wind up being recorded and probably streamed on the SXSW site, or something like that. Plus, I'll have my own flip camera and record some personal footage that I'll upload myself. (I'm Phil Freeman, for anyone who doesn't know.)

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Saturday, 6 March 2010 02:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I knew you posted around here from the Miles Davis threads and I figured their might be some ILM people that would want to know.

I've been on a huge Motorhead kick for the past six months or so and if I was in Austin, I would definitely check it out. Lemmy is a trip, I read his autobio a month or so ago. I'd love to read a book with just Lemmy talking about rock records. Lemmy is just one of those guys that has the long view of the whole thing.

Have fun.

My favorite Motorhead disc is "Orgasmatron." It sounds like no other Motorhead album, has a line-up that purists don't give a lot of stock to, but the songs and sound of it all that still allow Lemmy's attitude to shine through is awesome.

Motorhead: Don't buy our new box set
By Ed Payne, CNN

Call it "Overkill" if you must, but the iron-fisted metal band Motörhead doesn't want its fans to buy their extravagant new 15-disc box set that comes out Tuesday.

Why?

At over $600, it's too expensive.

"Unfortunately greed once again rears its yapping head," said frontman Lemmy Kilmister. "I would advise against it even for the most rabid completists!"

Housed in a Motörhead-style skull with red light-up eyes, the package includes the eight early albums -- from the self-titled debut to "No Remorse" -- plus the band's early singles, along with some posters and a photo book.

"Motörhead have no control over what's done with these early songs, and don't want fans to think that the band is involved in putting out such a costly box set," the band said.

The price for the "Complete Early Years Box Set" is similar to The Beatles 2009 Japanese remastered box set, which included 16 discs and a DVD, according the website most-expensive.net. The U.S. version can be purchased these days for less than $200.

ABBA's nine CD box set went for about $500.

But are fans willing to slap down six big bills for set?

In the forum on the band's official website, the limited reaction was negative.

"No way, there's nothing new in that box, not even one new song," said a fan, who goes by the handle MotorLaw. "For serious collectors only."

At least one fan seemed tired of the new spin on the old albums.

"Except for the nice packaging it's just a re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-release!" said Juggernaut.

If its fans aren't spending money on the new box set, what would Motörhead have them do instead?

The band does have a new album and DVD out -- "The Wörld Is Yours" and "The Wörld Is Ours - Vol 1 - Everywhere Further Than Everyplace Else." Both were released late last year.

just watched the great Lemmy documentary, listening to Bomber now. Do bands exist like this now? Do people exist like Lemmy? The closest I can think of is Darkthrone, because they've got a handful of acknowledged classic records, a LOT more records that fans like, but few others can distinguish between, and just keep doing their thing regardless of trends. (Except in true internet-era style, Darkthrone don't tour or participate much in the outside world beyond their records, interviews, Fenriz's blog, etc) Lemmy just defies real life, like the gods decided he was going to be the symbol of a rock and roll lifestyle, and gets to drink, smoke and fuck as much as he wants for as long as he wants.
