Her "public" is on this thread or writing their own M.I.A. reviews.

not to get all 'in my world of young ppl' but c'mon dude. she may not be lady gaga but she's pretty famous/popular.

some dude, Monday, 12 July 2010 19:37 (thirteen years ago) link

the alt report report is funnie mainly for zinging perpetua imo:

Not sure if this reviewer ‘authentically hates M.I.A.’ or if it is a rookie music writeblogger critic trying to make a name for himself in the blogisphere by ’shitting hard’ on this album/M.I.A.’s brand:

Without compelling tunes, the obnoxious public antics, dubious political messages, and thin voice that had grated on her naysayers have become impossible for even dedicated fans to ignore. It’s as if everything that was great about M.I.A. has been stripped from this music, leaving behind only the most alienating aspects of her art and public persona.

Seems obvi. Coulda just posted a picture of some feces and moved on, but I feel like maybe this review is an opportunity to ‘be remembered forever’ maybe.

Well I don't usually read his stuff and I thought Pitchfork would assign an album this significant to a writer worthy of the job. My mistake.

Hating on Perpetua in 2010 is like still making fun of Martin Lawrence for screaming at people on Ventura Blvd.

(although, Perpetua is still Perpetua doing his Perpetua thing, and Martin Lawrence has cleaned up and cooled out...so, um, carry on!)

it was pretty lol when he threw a pompous hissy fit about the jukebox rating animal collective badly, along the lines of "ANCO ARE SO IMPORTANT HOW DARE YOU CRITICISE THEM" and then he made some comparison to some 80s canon indie that probably wouldn't have passed 6/10 on the jukebox either.

I just realised what this reminds me of: a school report. "Maya is a bright, energetic girl with lots of ideas but she often fails to execute them to the best of her ability. I wonder if she has been distracted by her blossoming relationship with one of her classmates, Benjamin Brewer, and her friendship with a disruptive new arrival, Rusko. While it is good to see her so willing to speak up in class - she certainly is an opinionated young lady! - perhaps she should think a little harder before opening her mouth in future. Then, of course, there is the regrettable incident of Ms Hirschberg's cellphone number, which you will already have discussed with the principal. In conclusion, we hope that this has been a temporary setback and that next semester Maya will get back to the kind of appealing grooves and memorable hooks that we know she is capable of."

As much as I disagree with Perpetua, I feel like his writing is usually at least a little better than this.

i don't really know anything about perp but i've recently started noticing how fucking dull and lame his reviews are

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 July 2010 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

His bubble world consists of bands he thinks are ZOMGFANTASTIC and everything else ranges from bad to terrible, and when someone dare shit on one of his favorites he reacts like a big baby. At least, this is the way it was for many years. But even more, he's prone to be super-duper-hypercritical if an artist is doing something the wrong way, as his idea of what/how they should be doing what they do is always far -superior-.

Fluxblog is an MP3 blog created and updated by Matthew Perpetua. The blog began in 2002, and began to host MP3 posts at the end of that year. Fluxblog has featured in many publications and programs in the mainstream media including The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Spin, The Guardian, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, and Newsweek. Rapper Obie Trice gave a "shout out" to Fluxblog in his album track "Nobody Got The Z-Man's Back", with the lines "Fluxblog man/ Fuck Pogman"; the story made the cover of the New York Times.

What I don't get is how can someone appreciate Sleigh Bells, then turn around and say Maya is "too noisy".

― Soft Sad Tecmo Bowl (Spinspin Sugah), Monday, July 12, 2010 11:07 AM (1 hour ago) Bookmark

the perception of noisiness doesn't necessarily correlate to loudness, shrillness or sound density - or to anything, really. it's subjective, having as much to with our taste in sound as anything else. to my ears, treats does sound noisy, but not in an unpleasant way. sleigh bells make the noise aspects work with their music and even as music. the /\/\/\Y/\ tracks i've heard fail to do this. as a result, they sound unpleasantly or pointlessly noisy.

and i don't see anything so incredibly awful about the perpetua review. it's pretty ordinary, really. the facts are in order, the language is clear, the arguments reasonably well supported. not great, but hardly worth the effort it might take to clown it.

Am I wrong to be bothered by the description on Fluxblog?

"Fluxblog is the very first MP3 Blog. It was founded by me, Matthew Perpetua, in 2002."

It seems a pretty dubious claim to make that it was the "very first", I seem to remember lots of blogs hosting mp3s all popping up around the same time.

btw as to the question about who cared about the MIA lynn hirschberg thing--those stories did pretty well for us at big gawks, which is admittedly not a huge audience but certainly bigger than the ilx/music crit circles.
