not sure why some ppl think it's 'creepy' for a woman to shave her vag - the 'ew it's so pre-pubescent' is pretty bullshit, since it's widely acceptable (and mostly preferable) for women to shave their armpits and legs. in my experience guys like shaved vag for the same reasons: it's cleaner, fresher, feels nicer, is better for oral sex and is more visually stimulating.

According to Wikipedia, the Brazilian became popular/widely-known amongst "the average person" in the late 80s, which jibes with my memories of people making Brazilian wax jokes in high school.

Wikipedia also has a handy visual guide to different wax jobs; it is probably for the best that guys don't do this as all of them would look silly next to a penis (esp. the landing strip; no one wants a dick with fuzzy racing stripes).

this is all kinda crazy subjective stuff here - I mean - if people enjoy shaving their parts, hey, more power to 'em, but "cleaner"? a shower's a shower; "feels nicer" - mileage varies obv; "better for oral sex" & "more visually stimulating" - you'll find plenty of people of both genders who'll disagree on both counts. but I don't think it's creepy for a woman to shave it! just for dudes to think there's something gross about woman parts that have hair on them - a dude for whom the vagina in its natural state seems a thing in need of grooming/improvement, is a dude creeps me out a little, is all

in other news I'm creeped out by any guy who'd say a woman needs to have her breasts enlarged - oh no, I'm trampling on people's sexual preferences

(jus1n3 like I say for a person who's doing something for themselves whatever all power! I am just skeeved by dudes who think there's something gross about a grown woman with pubic hair)

in my experience it totally depends on the woman, some gals have outta control thistle and need to take advantage of some hedge trimmers and some others don't have to worry as much. I don't think there's any absolute here. I, in my personal quest for the cup, would rather a clean shot from the fringe rather than hacking through the weeds. all imho fuiud.

Not grossed out by pubes at all btw. Then again I'm not hairy at all (like anywhere except my head) and guess I've never really been anyone who has been ott hirsute. Maybe I would feel differently if I had. I mean this, for instance, is sorta out of control: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/80/Woman_with_hirsutism.jpg/230px-Woman_with_hirsutism.jpg.

also to counter tuomas' blame porn thing i think the increased expectation for both sexes to keep things ~manageable~ is a result of it being more conventional/normal for dudes to go down on women, maybe? like it just seems like common courtesy to keep things trimmed, if you want oral sex

Lamp, Sunday, 11 July 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Guys I don't think JD is saying he minds trimming, shaving, what have you but that he thinks it's a little strange when guys INSIST on a woman being completely bare. I mean, I've taken it all off at someone's request before but he wasn't insistent on it. I have, however, met guys who think that any hair at all is completely gross and I have to say that I do agree that that is at least a little odd.

question for the naturalists: why is it okay to shave the underarms bare but *heavens* not the pubis!?!

o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:07 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah sorry just1n3 I think our signals crossed - like I was saying, I don't think anything anybody does to themselves for their own gratification is really creepy until you get way out onto the margins of, like, severe body mod - but I do think people having a sort of "it's a dealbreaker" stance toward non-modified body bits is really bizarre, is all I meant to be saying - you said:

not sure why some ppl think it's 'creepy' for a woman to shave her vag - the 'ew it's so pre-pubescent' is pretty bullshit, since it's widely acceptable (and mostly preferable) for women to shave their armpits and legs.

about which I want to be clear: I think it's creepy when dudes are like "oh, it's gotta be shaved" - as if there were something really super-ick about hair where it naturally grows. that stance skeeves me senseless - a preference for one's partner to modify him/herself as a prerequisite to desirability, yeah, ugh to me!

well, you sorta keep bringing up this mythical nobody as well, right? The one who calls dealbreaker but doesn't post to this thread.

Grisly Addams (WmC), Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:13 (thirteen years ago) link

is that guy really mythical? as noted above, pornography's sort of become a place where the default state is "shaved" - to the point where "hairy" is considered a fetish - I don't think you'd have to wander too far afield to find plenty of guys opining that pubic hair is an undesirable quantity, or that not being bothered by it = having a thing for it, which is a pretty bizarre consequence imo

les yeux sans aerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 11 July 2010 18:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Obv these people exist and are not mythical, but the same is true for Shasta's "why is it okay to shave the underarms bare but *heavens* not the pubis!?!" people. Both of you have your particular grouse that you're trying to flush out of the bush, fnarr fnarr, on this thread.

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Sunday, 11 July 2010 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I've nothing against someone shaving their pubic hair if they want to, but I find it problematic if a shaved pussy becomes such a standard that women feel they have to shave to fit in - and I think that might be where this current trend is leading to. It's already happened with arm and armpit and leg hair: most women I know think it's kinda "weird" if a woman doesn't shave those parts. If this was a subjective choice I'd have no problem with it, but a hairless body has become such a beaty standard it's hardly just a matter of personal choice. I don't think it should be anyone's responsibility as a woman to shave any part of their body.

As for a shaved pussy being "cleaner, fresher, feels nicer, is better for oral sex and is more visually stimulating", personally I don't feel that way at all. Even if you haven't shaved it, it stays fresh and clean enough if you just wash it regularly. And it doesn't really feel nicer to me, I like stroking a bit of hair. And like I mentioned above, if there's any stubble there, it's not better for oral sex; a hairy pussy is actually a better cushion for your face. As for visual stimulation, I don't find the inside of a vagina a particularly aesthetic sight (the porn movie style of "showing it all" is just too straightforward), and the shaved outside certainly has kind of a pre-pubescent look, which I don't think is particularly stimulating. A hairy pussy, on the other hand, retains its mystery and exhumes an aura of maturity, which to me is much more stimulating.
