i have seen this band twice and i think my reaction was 'now i understand why people used to spend their lives following the grateful dead around'*, they have released a lot of records, i have no idea where to start with the discography, fire escape doesn't really do it for me fyi, anyone else?

*possibly people still do this? um

^ posts very much in character

one time i saw them and they had a tape which featured the words 'spiritual baseball': is this on record, somewhere? does anyone know where the text is from?

I'm interested in this too - on paper I should dig them but I've never picked up an album. I had tickets to see them once but I had to go home and throw up instead.

they are good enough that you should have found a place near the venue to throw up and continued to the gig. if the situation arises again bear this in mind

Advice noted.

when's the last time they released anything? 2006?

dmr's first post is pretty otm from what i've heard of them, though i'd say destroy rare wood iirc.

haha ok according to http://www.sunburnedhand.com/disco.html they had 15 releases in 2005 and then dropped off the planet.

they are kinda like phish or something but dirtier. i never found a record of theirs i really liked but they were okay live circa 2003.

chris corsano is SO cute. what a babe.

ok yeah agreed. I like the long rockin' one toward the end ("Glass Boot") but it's not that great

re-listening to No Magic Man right now. it's pretty good. it came as a free cd if you subscribed to Arthur.

also search 2003 The Sunburned Hand of the Man (LP)

I think their website is just out-of-date, there are post-2005 releases on wikipedia. other than a couple tracks off Fire Escape I haven't heard anything after No Magic Man.

they released an interesting double called 'wedlock' a few years back 'the wire' loved. it was it in their 2005 top-50 rewind and the original reviewer claimed it's "music that is part acid folk trance and part shamanic ceremony. The effect is to slowly peel back your scalp and trigger your skull into full lurch mode"

that was the one i meant to buy but never quite did

thomp, Sunday, 11 July 2010 13:13 (thirteen years ago) link

they recorded it around bonfires in the alaska tundra during a hippy wedding celebration. i would not advise listening to it without drugs. it's kind of unlistenable if you're sober

Closest thing to a main Sunburned thread I guess — word going around from people who would know that Marc Orleans has passed on. No details shared yet in public.

ah man, very sad. he was v sweet to me when I bounced up to him after seeing them play an incredible set when I was about 19 and babbled at him that it was mb the best thing I'd ever seen

I went to see them back in 2006, if memory serves, and it was an amazing experience. My friend, however, thought it the most self-indulgent show he'd ever been to, just a structureless, meaningless mess (see: Your IRL Friends and Their Musical Preferences).

Oof, sad news. My affection for SHotM has always been eclipsed by my affection for NNCK, but loved seeing Sunburned live back in 05 or so. He also seemed like a great guy.

Also, I somehow had no idea that he was in Enos Slaughter, possibly the best of the NNCK-related side projects. The "On Sunday" LP continues to blow my mind these many years later.

Slightly happier thread revival: new one, Pick a Day to Die, is track for track excellent, and feels necessary in a way they haven’t in a while.

Who wants an eight part 'history of' podcast?

Thanks for the nudge Ned, listened to the first episode yesterday. I'll be honest, the first half had me doubting things a little, just not a fan of the whole on mic contemplative, "gee, what would this podcast even LOOK like", thing, but the interview bits are priceless and I'm hoping the edges will sand down in future episodes.
