I had a roommate who used to put a bunch of essential oils into her shampoo. mostly rose and patchouli. I had another friend who made a rinse/spray thing to get beach hair any time that was honey, salt water and lemon juice. Pretty yummy smelling.

what is 'beach hair'?
― c sharp major, Thursday, 8 July 2010 13:42 (fourteen years ago) link
Oh I loved the way Aussie products smelled way back when, but I also used to love Tea Rose perfumes and all kinds of stinky things.

Salon selectives hairspray was what I used to cover up the smoke smell when I was sneaking cigs in high school. I now associate it with Mad Dog hangovers and too many smokes.
― quincie, Thursday, 8 July 2010 13:44 (fourteen years ago) link
is salon selectives the one that smelled like fake apple smell? pinkish coral bottle?

Mad Dog hangovers and too many smokes.

that is what I meant by "nostalgic for high school". hee hee hee. yeah. the bottle was pink and it was very fruity/candy
― Kelsey Glamour (Nijoli), Thursday, 8 July 2010 13:46 (fourteen years ago) link
it's what your hair is like after the beach. it's easier to shape, smells good, looks cool and is maybe a little bit lighter.
― peacocks, Thursday, 8 July 2010 13:46 (fourteen years ago) link
Beach hair is tousled, piecey, and messy and works best with wavy hair. Not such a great look on stick straight hair like mine.

beach hair is the first step on the short road to dreads for me!(i have never let it get there tho! always break down and comb/wash after day 3 when camping/at a cottage w lake or sea).
my friend who is a hair stylist digs the salt-in-water 'hairspray' too

― the soul of the avocado escapes as soon as you open it (Laurel), Thursday, 8 July 2010 14:19 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah it probably is which is why my hair feels sooo soft and nice when I wash it the day after the beach.
― peacocks, Thursday, 8 July 2010 14:46 (fourteen years ago) link
My hair is so gross at the beach! I have naturally curly hair and the beach makes it frizzy. I look like little orphan annie the second i step out on the sand.

i look like a sad drowned rat at the beach. my hair gets mad stringy and looks awful.

― peacocks, Thursday, 8 July 2010 15:05 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah so does mine but for a certain type of hair salt water can make it look pretty great.
― o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Thursday, 8 July 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago) link
I mean, I might have that certain type of hair but I also might think my hair looks better than it does. Someone looking at me strutting around after a beach day might say "that girl is a mess, why doesn't she do something?!"
― peacocks, Thursday, 8 July 2010 15:39 (fourteen years ago) link
nij, salon selectives makes me nostalgic for YOUR high school days
i was looking for some just a couple days ago and was sad to see it was not made anymore

Ha, yes. The quest for that hair style is why I kept getting terrible perms.
I get nostalgic for Revlon's Aquamarine shampoo sometimes, and once dear Julia bought me a bottle! I used it sparingly over like a year to make it last. :D
I always used to beg my parents to buy Prell (because it came in a cool tube and was GREEN!) and my mom always refused, citing its similarity to dish soap. I do remember Agree. I also remember when people called it "cream rinse" instead of "conditioner."

when in doubt though, my answer is usually yes until i decide nowould not wear it to work obvs , but i am on vacation so fuck iti'm wearing a skort
― ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Thursday, 8 July 2010 15:54 (fourteen years ago) link
Saw some girl wearing a coral/orange skort with side buttons, on the subway yest. You'd think I would have done more of a double-take but I guess I'm getting used to hipster fashion repurposing, what with living on the L train now.

The way they're going lately, they'll be into quilted calico by fall. I mean it's too bad I got rid of any of that Little House on the Prairie stuff from junior high, I could sell it to Beacon's Closet for a mint.

― ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:08 (fourteen years ago) link
OH, you mean the Veronica Bradley or wahtever her name is. That's not exactly what I was thinking of -- for whatever reason the VB line is a favorite of upper-middle class Long Island/Upper East Sidey girls who go to their family's summer cottage on the weekends. The same kind of girls who always have Elsa Peretti-for-Tiffany's necklaces. Whereas the hipster thing I'm anticipating is more of the straight '80s mauve-and-"country kitchen blue" stencil motif.

In Jr High I had a corduroy blue and mauve floral print Laura Asley pants jumpsuit. It was God awful but I could actually sorta see some hipster fashion girl reclaiming that sort of thing.

oops lol
Yeah it's already sort of back, what with the tan/brown lace-up boots everyone's been wearing for a year or two already. I just have this allergic reaction to them now, but I had a black pair in jr high that I thought were very Euro and sophisticated at the time. OH YEAH. But following on the heels of that existing trend, I can see the yoked jackets and quilted flannel calico making the wider scene this fall.

lol cannot believe this style has made a resurgence amongst the youngsi am glad to be old enough to laugh in a self-reflective way at the peaks and troughs of their journeys of self-discovery through lol fashion
and hahaha i had never even heard of Veronica Bradley until i became friends this year with someone from a posh(ish) town in Long Island!
