Got 100% last night, 38 hours. Horseshoes: aiming with left trigger is u+k. liar's dice: stick to low gambles and let them make the first stupid move. Poker is a bit harder but the NPCs are pretty wimpy so you can generally bully them into folding.

Horseshoes: aiming with left trigger or right trigger, whichever gives you the zoomed in view.

I played this game all the way through and never got the random event where the nun gives you the take-less-damage cross! My brother got it like 2 hours into his game. :(

Dan I., Tuesday, 6 July 2010 18:02 (thirteen years ago) link

there's a couple of random events i've only got once, and i've been playing this waaay too much.

there's one where someone comes up to you asking about a stagecoach that's gone missing. pretty sure you have to find it, kill everyone, then drive it back. but i fucked it up and have never seen it again. too much fast traveling probably.

goole, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 18:03 (thirteen years ago) link

man, i get that one all the time. i'm itching to get another "save my friend from an unjust hanging!" one since i fucked it up twice now.

finally got to mexico btw! it was nighttime though, so riding around with that jose gonzalez song playing wasn't as cinematic as i was hoping for.

ran into my first bug last night, i was doing that landon ricketts mission where you are supposed to rescue the girl from the cave. right when the butcher distracts the guards and you're supposed to run in there, my dude starts running into a wall and won't take no for an answer. couldn't shoot, turn around, stop running, anything. i was messing around with the subtitle settings right beforehand, i wonder if that broke the game.

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Monday, 19 July 2010 17:13 (thirteen years ago) link

During the game, the players were allowed to take a 10-minute break every hour for humanitarian purposes — to use the restroom and eat.

What a waste of time. I'd be levelling a Tauren warrior tank on Warcraft with those hours. Probably get it to 80, too.

It's all multiplayer, none of it co-op as far as I can tell.

I managed to get to the end before fatigue set in. It was touch and go though, and I still have outstanding side mission stuff, like treasure hunts and outlaw hideouts, left uncompleted. I can leave it. I wouldn't mind if Rockstar do a supplemental game set in the same world, a la Ballad of Gay Tony, at some point.

F-Unit (Ste), Friday, 13 August 2010 10:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I 100%ed and spent a decent amount of time in multiplayer but yeah ain't touched it for weeks now.

ledge, Friday, 13 August 2010 10:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I took a break for a few weeks but now I'm enjoying playing it some more, trying to find all the treasures or just riding around. Anyone want to give me a hint on where to find the treasure where the image on the map is just like a rock that looks like an ice cream cone? I think it's like the fifth or sixth treasure? Don't really want to ride around the entire map looking for that one specific rock and I'm not sure if there's a clue I'm not catching.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 13 August 2010 12:47 (thirteen years ago) link

an upside down ice-cream cone? think you've just gotta stumble across it, or cheat. i got lucky. it's not too far off the beaten track though.

ledge, Friday, 13 August 2010 12:51 (thirteen years ago) link

there is a clue, it tells you the general location on the skills menu (where it tells you how many you've achieved). To be honest I wish they hadn't done that, I didn't mind riding around the whole map searching for these.

The location isn't described on the normal map though, i think you have to buy the extra places from a store. I think so anyway.

F-Unit (Ste), Friday, 13 August 2010 12:53 (thirteen years ago) link

it's more or less directly between two towns, if you just ride along the compass point and ignore the road.

ledge, Friday, 13 August 2010 12:54 (thirteen years ago) link

and i think i know which one that is and yes i got lucky with it too lol

I think I came close to burning in the Mexico section. Once I got to Blackwater I gained a second wind, I think. I liked how right towards the end you got a few mundane farm related missions again, herding cattle and such.

And don't forget the joker (DavidM), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:53 (thirteen years ago) link

had a major blast on this today, still looks glorious.

great little moment. Noticed now that the map is open that there are two trains. At one point the two trains crossover a small area of the same line and I thought cool might see a train crash. but instead the train i was on waited for ages at a junction for the other train to chug through to safety.

F-Unit (Ste), Saturday, 14 August 2010 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

The new maps are pretty fun, but my friends and I got killed over and over and over in multiplayer last night. I guess the lure of double XP weekend combined with new maps brought out the heavyweights.

no gut busting joke can change history (polyphonic), Monday, 16 August 2010 16:26 (thirteen years ago) link

what does xp, double or not, even get you? the incentives on multi in this thing are fucked.

grinding xp in match games gets you new weapons and character skins, but only in free-roam, where there's not much to do, except grind the same half-dozen gang hideouts. or wander around murdering other players which is pretty boring.

if xp allowed you to change your loadout in match games it might feel worth it.

goole, Monday, 16 August 2010 16:33 (thirteen years ago) link

You can use the characters and mounts in co-op play, which I do a lot.

Also my friends care way more about the xp issue than I do.

no gut busting joke can change history (polyphonic), Monday, 16 August 2010 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, and you can use your player skins in free-for-all I think.

no gut busting joke can change history (polyphonic), Monday, 16 August 2010 17:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Haven't bought the new maps, but probably will. Dusted this off again last night after a few weeks. Best thing that happened was I jumped in a stagecoach to get back to Armadillo, it started on its journey over the railway tracks & managed to get run over by a train - weird animation of it being dragged down the tracks, tumbling & breaking up. The stage coach ended up on the roof of the local train station. I was OK but thought I'd just set up camp to get back to Armadillo - seemed a much safer option.

Bill E, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link

The new maps are definitely fun if you already enjoy the multiplayer. One of them that takes place in the desert hills is great for tomahawking guys.

Pretty sure Rockstar policy is not to license out their properties for films because they see that as absurdly redundant.

Pitt's company was developing a Dark Void film as a possible vehicle for Pitt to star in, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was abandoned after that game bombed.

three weeks pass...

started this game a week ago and absolutely loved it, playing it for hours every day but i've just arrived in mexico and now i have no urge to load it up again. sick to death of the pointlessly lengthy cutscenes - the final straw was the one just before that gnarly old cowboy guy teaches you stage 3 of dead eye, with him just rambling on uselessly for ages. clear case of scriptwriters thinking they're making a 'cinematic production' and padding it out with needless dialogue fluff and forgetting they're making a GAME. and the inability to skip the skinning cutscenes is irriating as hell.

as has been said above, the fact that there's no real incentive to earn money - not many new weapons, i've had the same $750 horse since an hour into it, plus the missions are either too short (stop the train zzz) or getting boringly repetitive. i *know* it's a great game but i hope giving it a few days break will get me back into it. never had this problem with assassins creed 2, saboteur or the latest splinter cell though. AC2 in particular was a joy from start to finish.

NI, Sunday, 19 September 2010 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

You can totally skip the cutscenes!

no gut busting joke can change history (polyphonic), Sunday, 19 September 2010 22:21 (thirteen years ago) link

i know i know but i like to know what's going on, don't want to miss anything vital for the story - maybe after marston and some guy wittering on aimlessly for 5 minutes some vital plot turn will happen! it's my problem really, i should be more free & easy with the skip button but wish to hell the script-editor had been more brutal and kept things tighter. as meh as mafia2 was to play, the cutscenes were always watchable and never felt like a chore.

NI, Monday, 20 September 2010 14:53 (thirteen years ago) link

i've gone back to it, i'm mostly done with mexico now. funny shit that happened yesterday:

-trying to return a stolen wagon, i crashed and apparently suffered some kind of spinal injury. wasn't dead, but could only lie on the ground motionless and move the camera. a coyote came and nibbled but then wandered away, i was just hoping something will kill so i didn't have to restart but no luck.

-ended up on a cliff above the town i wanted to get to, not sure how to get down with my horse. so i just dismounted and slid down, tried to call my horse but it didn't seem to be working. then i was running from coyotes across the field, saw a dot moving towards me on the map, spun around and shot my horse point blank. :(

The new expansion is great. Much better than the last one, although I don't regret buying that one either.

Kind of irrelevant if you don't play the multiplayer, of course. But Liar's Dice, horse racing, the Stronghold mode... pretty sweet.

done (at 70%, which i am totally cool with). the last act (everything after you go back home basically) was so much better than i was expecting!
