Starting to get some works out of material from recent o/s trip. All best listened with headphones, and all a bit arty shit (no/few beats).

snoball, bassline on extension is sweet

Thanks, it's a VST instrument called Synth1. I made a basic FM bass patch and put it though an EQ to filter out the high end.

hey guys, that album that i've been working on seven years, on and off (but mostly this year)? it's done. it won't be out for couple months, while i figure out artwork and see if i can get any labels to bite, but i put some tracks up here:

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 15:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow, owenf, I really like the arrangement of "Smoke" - great sound you've got going with the disco strings fighting off the Nintendo bleeps and bloops and everything else. My gut says the vocals are mixed too high, but maybe that's what you're going for. Agreed about the late chorus - the instrumental passage between verse and chorus actually has a cool texture but it goes on long enough that it feels like we've hit the end of the song and the band are winding out with a jam, y'know? Momentum gets broken. But really a cool sound.

crut: I'm digging "People." I actually think this one could survive the vocal being louder, sort of reverberating in the medieval hall of the rest of the track if that makes sense. I like how thick the mix is for being lo-fi, when the backing vocals (synth pad?) come in it's like, I didn't even realize there was room for them in there. It's cool.

But hey, what do I know? I haven't recorded original material in years now...although I think I am finally getting close to putting the finishing touches on the Girl Talk knockoff project described upthread (in 2007!!!), after which I'm gonna break out the keyboards again and get to work. But as far as the mashup thing goes, if y'all are into that kinda thing, there's a couple new chapters here: http://www.myspace.com/djaktorcosimo - "Unthinkable Terror" followed immediately in the mix by "The Prince and the Renegades."

Here are the first 7 out of 9 tracks of a home-recording project I did a couple of years ago. I really recorded it for myself rather than anyone else, so I'm aware some of it sounds a bit rough-round-the-edges; plus I can't seem to upload the last two tracks for some reason, and they were my favourite ones. Still if anyone has time to listen and comment, would be interested in hearing yr thoughts.

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:24 (thirteen years ago) link

thanks jordan, no i took that as a compliment. just a shame i couldn't upload the last two tracks as they're much more detailed and better produced (if such a thing is achievable using only Acid Pro and Soundforge plus a bit of basic Reason for "effects").

guys, it's the only rock song on the record but you cannot front on this guitar solo: http://soundcloud.com/chantssound/05-onlookers

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

how did you get the guitar to stutter like that? it's pretty cool because i thought your guitar cable was loose until i realised it was intentional. haha, this keeps building up - tune!

dear ilx, help us produce this track

http://soundcloud.com/constantlightduo/piano-bass

a quick idea that turned out better than expected but unsure where to take it from here. first thought is some sort of echoey spoken part but i'd rather it not end up sounding like a straight hood ripoff. any thoughts?

do you know sixty (electricsound), Thursday, 2 September 2010 10:48 (thirteen years ago) link

sounds really nice. i would add a heavy dilla-style beat, but you know me (actually i would love to sample this).

the parking garage has more facebook followers than my band (Jordan), Thursday, 2 September 2010 16:15 (thirteen years ago) link

i do think you could add some subtle percussion, like fast clicky stuff in the background or a reverbed-out tambourine on the 4.

do the bass notes hit on the upbeat or the downbeat?

the parking garage has more facebook followers than my band (Jordan), Thursday, 2 September 2010 16:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I was thinking kind of flickery percussive noises. But that might be something to avoid if you want to not get Post-Rock/IDM crossover comparisons.

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Thursday, 2 September 2010 16:19 (thirteen years ago) link

good feedback guys. i like the idea of some spidery percussion but the biggest problem is that no click track was used at all, so the timing is almost certainly all over the place - so it couldn't really be a 'beat' per se. the sensible thing to do would be to re-record it but that's kinda against the spirit of what we do..

a tambourine that follows the bass could probably work though, will give it a try. the bass is on 1 & 4 so kinda both the up and downbeats i guess?

also feel free to sample if you desire!

do you know sixty (electricsound), Friday, 3 September 2010 01:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Lazy bad idea: drop it into Ableton and warp it

More complicated idea that will keep the natural live groove: edit it in something which allows you to visualise the wave forms so you can tell where the beat falls naturally, and drop in samples that align

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Friday, 3 September 2010 09:34 (thirteen years ago) link

jim could you send me a download link or email it to me (jordan 1 at gmail, no space before the 1)? i'll give it a shot.
