the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Monday, 26 July 2010 18:26 (thirteen years ago) link

AVAM can be pretty awesome depending on what the major exhibition is.

kkvgz, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link

I would def. take that into consideration when planning a trip.

kkvgz, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link

avam is really cool imo, although the only time i was there was when there was a neat exhbition/special day going on.

some dude, Monday, 26 July 2010 22:03 (thirteen years ago) link

oh i wld def go there. i assume it is both appaling and inspiring, sometimes at the same time.

i have been wanting to go there!

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 11:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I had never heard of that. Thanks!

This past weekend I went to a friend's kid's birthday party at Fort Howard Park, which had some cool, explorable, run-down historic buildings, if anybody's into that kind of stuff.

kkvgz, Tuesday, 27 July 2010 12:04 (thirteen years ago) link

used to love the haunted dungeons at ft howard! they prob still do it, weekends in october... awesome place to take kids. museum of dentistry is great too. there's even a life size narwhal model.

haven't been to avam in a few years, so can't vouch for the current exhibit, but i've never been disappointed by past ones. there's a second building that's been open for a while now with large scale sculpture stuff from their permanent collection. also it's open late on thursdays for the rest of the summer, and they show outdoor movies then too.

maryland and bmore folks are the beaches in maryland nice. any recs for good daytrips for the family?

dyao, Thursday, 29 July 2010 21:08 (thirteen years ago) link

depends what you're looking for... ocean city is classic for the busy/trashy boardwalk and bars, mini golf and bumper cars type stuff. rehoboth up the highway in DE is kind of a lower key version of that. assateague could be a good day trip if you're more into wild ponies and birds and outdoorsy nature things. haven't been to any of these places in several years though.

selected ambient worker (another al3x), Thursday, 29 July 2010 22:20 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, my mom lives in Rehoboth so we always go to the beach there. been to Ocean City a lot, but more for the boardwalk/games/rides/shops, have very rarely actually spent time on the beach there. haven't been to Assateague in ages but have good memories.

"This is a perfect example of why we need officers down there who aren't afraid to enforce the laws," said Robert F. Cherry, president of the Fraternal Order of Police lodge. "Good police work involves being proactive on the smaller level as well, and the business community has said it had an issue with skateboarders who trespass and deface property. … Lo and behold, three years later the homicide unit locks up a skateboarder."

Pretty stoked about the rebuild of the Route 40 bridge over the Patapsco. There are lots of reasons that section of road is so scary, but the old crumbly bridge takes the cake for me.

there was an article about lake trout in the nyt

is it the next big thing now

john water (harbl), Monday, 4 October 2010 21:10 (thirteen years ago) link

>Why

in most cities when you dj John Oswald you clear the floor, but in Baltimore that's apparently when everyone starts line dancing

I was talking to Jason Willett and he mentioned a previous party: "I had them dancing to a Teach Your Parakeet To Sing record, and I wasn't even mixing it with anything. It was just 'Hello! How Are You! Hello! How Are You!', and the entire room was on fire"

Milton Parker, Monday, 4 October 2010 23:01 (thirteen years ago) link

xp: harbl, until I got to the article I thought you were talking about Lake Trout the band: "Hm. Maybe jazzy flute solos are going to be the first big '90s revival of the '10s..."
