Where's the album review? Is that going to be published tomorrow? All I read was 3rd tier masturbatory freshman year bullshit. This kid is an idiot, that's for sure. Don't quit your day job. Stay sweet, bro.

Interpol - Our Love to Admire (Capitol)

After Interpol debuted in 2002 with Turn Out the Bright Lights, there wasn't really anywhere to go but down...and down they went. Antics followed, though it was little more than the document of a band long on confidence and short on ideas. Now we have Our Love to Admire, and confidence has become arrogance. Interpol knows now that people will buy anything with their name on it, so the con is officially on. Don't be surprised if the fourth album is just a peanut butter & doo-doo sandwich mashed inside a jewel case.

Me. 2007.

we can all agree that Interpol is an important cultural fixture and we would be impoverished without them

ksh, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean I always suspected that the reception of that record was some true reactionary bullshit but I'm sure people had their reasons (i.e. Alfred, who always sort of hated them)

And I think the new song is gorgeous and basically a huge cavern in which guitars vibrate and Paul Banks talks about sex probably.

That is awesome, that is what Interpol do and still do.

xpost because ksh is gonna turn this (rightfully) into the Joanna Newsom thread.

they always seem funny in interviews, way more than say the strokes or whoever, constant pisstakers. so yeah the humour is intentional i'd say.

their appearance in many an end of decade poll right near the top for the first album seems to have revived a lot of interest in the band. also they seem to be handling carlos' departure well:

The guys lyrics are completely ridiculous to a fabulous degree and that combined with his serious- self important crooning voice make me occasionally think this band is the funniest band ever.

Not sure how that Lil B song is less boring than "Barricade," but it's less disgusting than the "Lights" video. Haven't heard anything as good as "Mammoth" or the best songs off the debut.

markers, Friday, 10 September 2010 16:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I've listened once and it's not a record that I immediately love or hate. Mood is consistent throughout, no songs really jumped out at me as THE SINGLE or THE BEST SONG. Overall it's not offensively bad, but a bit of a snooze.

Pfork gave Interpol s/t album a well-deserved 10.0 Best New Music as well as Best Album of 2010 since it obviously has no competition.

Yeah the OLTA cover was a real 'oh shit' moment. Especially if you thought that the Interpol artwork /website/ merch in general around the time of 2002 was *the best* you had ever seen by a band in the modern era. Way classier and cooler than The Strokes at the time. *Man* i miss old Interpol.

six years pass...

incredibly depressing interview with Carlos from last October that I just heard last night. goes in depth about the making of the s/t record and how he lost his mind and left the band. apparently he decided to leave, then recorded all of his bass and keyboard parts and gave them to the engineer, and never saw the band again. so the s/t record is vastly different than what it was "supposed to be"... thank goodness, I love the first half of this record so much, "Summer Well" is as good as anything on Antics. Interpol trying to go symphonic was bad news. Carlos says their goal going into the s/t record was to "make our Kid A."
