Mike Patton - C or D?

if you're referring to the Peeping Tom demos which were floating around Napster etc a while back the truth is they have nothing to do with the embryonic Peeping Tom project, but are actually old discarded demo tracks that Patton worked on with an unnamed producer some time ago but aborted before completion.

I interviewed the man last year and he told me that Peeping Tom had yet to record a note of music. obviously that may have changed somewhat by now, but the original demos purporting to be Peeping Tom were a hoax, although quite obviously the work of Patton (note the similarities to FNM and the more accessible moments of Bungle).

Baffles me why all the pseudo-hipster kids laud him so, must be the Vincent Gallo effect.

But hey, I'm not one to jump to rash conclusions..... so I'll check out some of his songs. Could someone recommend three tracks that will change my opinion about him? And please, make them nothing like the bad whiteboy funk metal (a la RHCP) or puerile gibberish (a la Green Jelly) songs I recall hearing in the past.

Maybe I was too drug-addled when Mr. Bungle's first album came out, but I finally listened to it today and appreciated it for the first time. For me, it blows Butthole Surfers, Ween and Boredoms out of the water.

It's like I'm destined to never like anything that I can share with anyone. Always discovering bands too early or too late or, as in the case with Phish and the Dead, just as completely out of touch with the general fanbase as everyone else seems to be.

I'm going to vote classic. Even though he's acts like a dork, farts in microphones on stage and probably tries too hard (or is it just natural?), he really seems to be the brains behind his interesting projects.

I've always loved Patton musically, but even if you can't stand the guy, anyone into noisy music and oddness can't help but find his labels artist roster pleasing:

Trying not to sound like a total n00b but aside from Dino's 'Volare' I've not been exposed to much Italian music at all, let alone the 60's pop stuff like this. I have to say I am LOVING it. OMG Senza Fine, and Scalinatella! Wow. Beautiful, moving...and I love Patton's voice on these, the covers here feel sincere and respectful, and I wanna hear more more more. I have been a googling fool since I got the album, finding out who all the original singers were...a whole new world of coolness!

Sounds Like: The Faith No More alum sure can use his voice box. Here he sings mostly in Spanish and with a touch of kitsch, but totally authentic.

Pretty sure this album will be quite good, the tracklist is absolute killer (Il Cielo In Una Stanza was my mother's all time favourite song).

I've listened to some of the originals, and it seems like Patton has given them a pretty respectful treatment. He sings them in his own way, but the arrangements and everything are quite true to the style of the original songs. Who knows, maybe your mother will like it too..

i think this is a really unique project. i can't say if patton does the originals justice, but italian music is a blindspot for me, so the fact that he's making me want to seek out the originals is a victory in itself. and of course, patton's chulo vibe is unmistakable here :P

Definite props to Patton if he can spark new interest in the original material. It's worked in me, for sure. Been reading up on some of the original artists. I have come to the conclusion that Italy is great. To wit: Gino Paoli attempted suicide by shooting himself in the chest, and the bullet's apparently still in there; Mina sang like nobodys business but was such a tearaway that she got banned by the Catholic church... then she shaved her eyebrows...her whole bio is generally pretty amazing; Luigi Tenco committed suicide in 67 (I think), but there were suspicions of murder...his body was exumed in 2006!!
See? Awesome music. Awesome bios. World needs more of this.

i was reading a review of the album on allmusic (http://bit.ly/97fls0) and was surprised to hear that the album was patched together from various recordings of mondo cane live... i had no idea. i knew the project first existed as a live entity, but i had no idea that those performances were being recorded, or that the final product is actually culled from multiple shows.

Quick lyrical sample: "You know what you did to me?/ You know what you did to me?!/I will hate you until God won't take me with Him" and other assorted delicacies.

And isn't the Urlo Negro chorus something about 'pick your own damn coffee beans, I'm not a slave'....or something like that?

Apparently Patton plans to release more volumes, with other songs from the live performances. YAY.

This video of Mina doing Il Cielo Una Stanza is pretty awesome. Pre-eyebrow shaving...she seems kind of out of it, somehow...drunk, or stoned, or something?...something in the way she keeps closing her eyes. But damn, that VOICE. And she's pretty gorgeous.
