On ILM I've found that saying the Beatles or Radiohead are shite elicits a "no they're not", or maybe a "fuck off".

Slagging the New fuckin' Radicals though brought on a tirade of hate.

WTF?

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 05:02 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't mind people hating bands i like if they can express something more than 'dude, they suck!'

nevertheless, i passionately hate Ned for his blatant disregard of Superchunk

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 05:18 (eighteen years ago) link

If Morrison was a hack, what are you guys? If you're you musically inclined at all, let's hear some tunes. How's your voice? Post some lyrics. Etc.

Maybe this is just something I've learned from hanging around with a variety of musicians my whole life, but I find it repulsive when people are critically blinded by their own interests. If you want to be an idiot, by all means, but at least preface with, "I am going to say something idiotic now!"

He's gone on to be an enduring legend. Not common with hacks.

"Maybe this is just something I've learned from hanging around with a variety of musicians my whole life, but I find it repulsive when people are critically blinded by their own interests."

So why you've been hanging out with musicians your whole life?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Obviously, I don't hang out with the same kind of musicians that you're familiar with.

Huzzah, Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:07 (eighteen years ago) link

in light of huzzah's posts i'm saying dud to the title question

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:12 (eighteen years ago) link

And I don't even really like Jim Morrison.

Huzzah, Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:15 (eighteen years ago) link

once the dude gets called enduring legend. dislike turns to outright insult. even someone as legendarily enduring as Jim. as a crooner and a poet. I be scared of anyone whose musical taste was like mine, like the old Groucho Marx joke. and who's puttin' down the Marxes?

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Anyone putting down the Marx boys is gonna have ME to contend with, the useless idiotic cocksuckers!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Unless you're IN your favorite band, it's ridiculous to interpret dismissive comments about them as personal insults, unless they're coming from an especially unimaginative person whose comments are invariably less about the band in question and more about simply winding you up.

If someone makes a pejorative crack about a favorite band of mine, all it says to me is that they're missing out, or simply that they have different taste. If they wanna smear sickly goop like Scout Niblett or Fall Out Boy or Usher all over their ears, that's their prerogative.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 14:24 (eighteen years ago) link

And Jim Morrisson wasn't a hack. Overrated? Yes. Jackass? Probably. Drunkard? Definetely. But not a hack.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 14:25 (eighteen years ago) link

At the risk of sounding hypocritical and disengenous, I do take exception to people shit-talking about a favorite band of mine and getting their facts wrong (i.e. calling them "goths" or whatnot). I don't take it as a "deep personal insult," but it does push my buttons.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 14:28 (eighteen years ago) link

John and M.V. are severely OTM.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 14:29 (eighteen years ago) link

You can dislike a band without it being insulting, too. I've had friends in bands I actively avoid but they're still pretty good people, if annoying as musicians.

I've been assured that something is definitely wrong with my brain because I don't like DMB, though. You'd think they would be more cool about it, like "I've got my stuff, you've got your stuff, there's some overlap, it's all cool" but instead it's more like insane ranting about how I'm just being contrary and haven't really listened to the music. That shit is deeply classic when I'm in the right mood, but so very dud otherwise.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 14:36 (eighteen years ago) link

i'll draw the lines where i damned well please...

but that doesn't ever mean i'm right

bb (bbrz), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 14:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm more annoyed by people putting my favourite music down than when they dislike my favorite movies/books. Is that just me or is music in some way closer to you/your personality than other things?

No amount of proselytizing will ever convince anyone to change their minds about a band. Minds aren't effectively changed by brow-beating and fans aren't won that way. I could sit here all day, and scream about how utterly crucial Group Sex by the Circle Jerks is. I could emphatically plead my case that the LP single-handedly caused a shift in the tectonic plates of rock culture, but if you don't like it ----- you don't like it. Perhaps I could encourage you to give it another listen, but I can't argue my way into convincing you to like it. Your "failure" to appreciate it, however, doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your brain, though (though I'll probably find you singularly exasperating from that point onward).

I don't hear anything exceptional about the DMB. Never have. Probably never will.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 14:48 (eighteen years ago) link

you know, when it comes down to it, I could care is someone dislikes something, but when you find someone that actually likes some nonsense you love, its like the world is all anew

Educating, One Person At A Time, Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:01 (eighteen years ago) link

the problem is never that someone doesn't like what you like, it's when they express it in such a manner as to be insulting to YOU. i.e. ANYONE who likes THAT band must be completely STUPID. When people act that way sincerely, then it's only fair to take it as an insult.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

two things(a.k.a. "Fun with Stating the Blatantly Obvious"):

1) people identify so much with their music and musical preferences are so personal that any criticism of the music becomes interpreted at personal attack. Again, "this music is me, so by attacking this music, you attack me"

2). If Morrison was a hack, what are you guys? If you're you musically inclined at all, let's hear some tunes. How's your voice? Post some lyrics. Etc.

yes, once again, unless you are more technically proficient in a particular area, ANY criticism is invalid since you obviously don't know as much or otherwise you would have already gone thru the work to do the same exact thing etc etc etc

Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Calling someone who has by all standards succeeded beyond most people's wildest expectations a "hack" is not just ANY criticism or don't you get that?

Huzzah, Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:21 (eighteen years ago) link

"Success" is no measure of greatness. Linkin Park are successful, and they're fucking hacks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:25 (eighteen years ago) link

There are many ways to interpret the word "succeeded" and Linkin Park's "success" does not compare at all to what I meant to imply in relation to Jim Morrison.

Huzzah, Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:30 (eighteen years ago) link

What about when the person's expressed dislike of your favorite (or a favorite) band includes some sort of sweeping ad-hominem that implicates you by proxy -- i.e. "[band] is for art-fags/poseurs/doddy old rockists/etc."?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 15:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Come on, I know there's a lotta contrarions around ILM who take it as a COMPLIMENT when someone starts hating on your favourite band! Depending who that person is. I've done it, haven't you?

REally, though, similar questions have been posed before, and my answer is similar: If I was to be offended by everyone who didn't share my exact tastes, I'd have to say bye-bye to a lotta friends/loved ones etc.

huzzah, are you the guy i work with?

huell howser (chaki), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 16:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Calling Morrison a hack does seem like a bit of a CHARGED remark. Obviously, some people think his lyrics are corny. But people could just as easily view Dylan's or John Lennon's lyrics as corny, really. And yet you wouldn't expect people to call them "hacks" because they don't happen to rub people the wrong way as much as Morrison does.

Taking another's dislike of your favorite band as a deep personal insult
...
taking another's love of a band you despise as reason to dismiss them as a human being

How about, Taking another's dislike of your favorite band as reason to dismiss them as a human being. That's more my style. Don't get mad, get dismissive.

taking another's love of a band you despise as reason to dismiss them as a human being

I don't know if I'm guilty of "dismissing" anyone as a "human being," but I've certainly lost some respect for people I've met who paid good money for albums by Creed, Alanis Morrisette and Kid Rock.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 17:23 (eighteen years ago) link

"Dismiss" and "human being" are definitely too far, but I was just quoting. My point was (a) I have a hard time seeing myself getting insulted because someone doesn't like a band I like, and (b) I just don't care enough about most other peoples' tastes in music that I feel any need to judge what they do and don't get into. I know what I like, I know who I trust to turn me on to stuff I don't know, and the rest of the world can go do its thing.
