that's a very kind offer, thank you. however: if it's that good, i feel i should actually buy it. so i shall!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 21:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I recommend it thoroughly!
If you prefer vinyl a 2nd pressing has just been released.
CD copies should be easily found .... well you know what shops.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 21:30 (eighteen years ago) link

What really appealed to me about the album was how rough and natural it sounded. It sounds like a good band just rocking out together in the studio. No overdubs, no studio/Pro-Tools trickery. It was really refreshing. That said, I haven't listened to the album in a few weeks. I got tired of it fast. Certain hooks would stick in my head in an almost irritating way. I'll buy the album on principle next time I'm at the store, but I doubt I'll ever unwrap it.

I really really really like the new album.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 22:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't see why The Fire in Our Throats is classified as metal. To me, it has none of the huge production or thick guitar sounds that I associate with the genre. The record instead sounds like it could have easily come out of the mid-90s indie scene.

I wrote the only negative review of this album that I've seen so far, for whatever that's worth. I can honestly say that I'm glad that I'll never have to listen to it again.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 00:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a feeling the reason so many people like the EP best is because a whole album of these guys is a bit much.

original bgm, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I like them. I haven't heard the new one yet, but everything else they've released I've enjoyed, so I can't complain about them.

I'm not going to say much about the "are they metal?" argument other than I think they are. Metal is a lot more than Slayer, Sabbath, or Priest, and if Earth is fucking metal, so are Pelican, and that's that.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I need to check out their other band "Tusk".

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 06:33 (eighteen years ago) link

I have agree with Alan, they are metal - just not within the narrow, stereotypical definition of it. Funny, there was a story on them last week in the Chicago weekly where they were talking about how when they've played metal festivals they're frequently derided for looking like "emo nerds" rather than "metal dudes."

Enjoyable and epic as hell. They can be a bit much to see live (particularly if you're prone to getting tired/bored while high) or life changing. While I wouldn't say they turned me on to drugs, I will say that their brand of heaviness helped usher it in.

Tusk is crazy, heavy grind (or crazy-heavy, if you prefer) for those of you who've never heard them.

Australasia was one long epic snore of a record for me, I'm afraid. Not sure I can be bothered with the new one.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 4 August 2005 07:21 (eighteen years ago) link

It's better than Australasia and possibly as good as the EP.

There's about 30 seconds of guitar, maybe a third of the way through, that sounds like Enter Sandman!

So I'm listening to the new album and...uh?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 February 2007 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

It's great!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Thursday, 22 February 2007 21:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Mmm. There was some criticism of them somewhere (maybe here) that said they were just bad post-rock ten years on and I think that might have been justified. Certainly compared to the earlier stuff I'd heard through my sis this is kinda flat.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 February 2007 21:33 (seventeen years ago) link

the guitarist playing all the muscular riffs is a tiny wee weedy bloke, which is very amusing.

He is well and truly small, and I spent a couple months of 1997 envying his ability to wear drainpipe highwater pants so well and wondering if Canadians were secretly turning into elves. (I wish I could remember more about his pre-Pelican band, apart from the fact that they looked like Refused and appeared in a great Hal Hartleyish short film this guy at school made.) The muscular riffs were inevitable, though: when I was working at our local record store, he was keeping the world's biggest On Hold shelf of metal and prog, and getting ongoing recommendations on it from Dylan from Cheer Accident.

nabisco, Thursday, 22 February 2007 21:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I very much wanted to like them. Following a casual interest in the Tribes of Neurot and an abiding love of "stoner rock" in general, I was digging around in epic, gloomy dirge metal for most of the early 00s. Amidst this, I got snared by the hype surrounding "post-metal" (or whateve we're supposed to call this stuff). Pelican, Isis, Old Man Gloom etc. The Pelican records never lived up to the hubbub, though I like Isis' Oceanic & Celstial, love OMG's Seminar III: Zozobra.

At this point, I've decided that the whole approach just isn't for me. We're a bad fit, the post-metal and me. I get bored too easily. When I want smeary, drifty, psychedelic shoegaze metal (and I often do), third-wave black metal bands are giving me a lot more bang for the buck.

Pye Poudre, Thursday, 22 February 2007 22:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Amazingly enough, I bought the March Into The Sea EP only a couple of days ago! It's pretty damn good; I'm rather getting on a post-shoegaze trip at the moment, and the 20-minute title track is adequate for most of my needs.

unfished business, Friday, 23 February 2007 00:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm with Ned on this new album. I am entirely unfamiliar with them, but based on what I've heard I don't see any reason to look further. Did I just start at the wrong place? Is there something transcendent they've done before that excuses the snoozy, post-prog nothingness of their latest work?

I've been told by people I trust that I would probably like them, so I'm willing to give it another go.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 23 February 2007 01:25 (seventeen years ago) link

i loooooove the first EP. the rest i really haven't given a close listens to yet

latebloomer, Friday, 23 February 2007 01:47 (seventeen years ago) link

(Wait, Pye Poudre, who are you again? Still getting used to the new IDs here.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 02:37 (seventeen years ago) link

yah, like i said on the metal thread, new album way too boring for me. it's indie-rock! there is something to be said for sparing us the indie-rock vocals i suppose. i had never heard them before though. i'm guessing their earlier stuff was more "epic".

scott seward, Friday, 23 February 2007 05:01 (seventeen years ago) link

seven months pass...

So I am being dragged (not unwillingly) along to see these guys live on Friday night. Am I likely to get into this? Esp with the above posts now expressing disdain at their recent work! (which really, whats wrong with it sounding like indie/postrock?)

Trayce, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 02:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I saw them about a year ago (might have been Dec 05 now I think about it) and enjoyed them an awful lot. Despite this, I've never got round to listening to 'City Of Echoes', which is where most of the criticism ^^^ is aimed so maybe that says more.

They were also VVVVLOUD when I saw them, probably the loudest band I've seen in that venue (and that includes Sunn0))) ). The bass drum was like being kicked in the chest.

aldo, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 08:42 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm pissed off at Hydrahead, they delayed posting the vinyls that we all pre-ordered saying there was delays, yet they still managed to get them to distros and shops? cunts. I guess they had our money so they were in no rush to send it as they wanted distro/shops money.

Looks like these guys have a new label, not too surprised:

Pelican sign to Southern Lord

It is with immense reverence that Southern Lord Recordings announces the signing of Chicago heavy-rock instrumental icons Pelican. The new material promises to be heavier, darker and very “riff-oriented” comments guitarist Trevor De Brauw. A very special guest guitarist who has been heavily influential to the band will be making a guest appearance more details to be revealed shortly!

In March Pelican will be touring alongside new label mates Wolves In The Throne Room, including a triumphant return to the South By South West music fest in Austin, TX at the Southern Lord showcase. Upon returning home Pelican will focus their sights on their 4th full-length album.
