Oh, you're right. I heard "Don't Shed A Tear" in the supermarket cereal aisle, and it was the first time I'd heard in years.

I think it's "that 'Tempted' guy" > "that guy who was in Mike + the Mechanics" > "that 'how long has this been going on' guy," > "Paul Carrack," but I could be wrong.

Various subsectors of the population would have it differently; how much overlap would there be in a Venn diagram of Squeeze fans v. Ace fans v. Mike + the Mechanics fans?

Okay, how about Clyde McPhatter? Dominoes, Drifters ("Money Honey"), solo career ("A Lover's Question") but very low name recognition.

I don't know if/how this compares to Carrack, but I was amazed to find out not long ago that one Tony Burrows is the lead vocalist for ALL of the following groups:

The Brotherhood of Man ('United We Stand')
White Plains ('My Baby Loves Loving')
Edison Lighthouse ('Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes')
The Pipkins ('Gimme Dat Ding')
First Class ('Beach Baby')

I was tempted (ehhh... pun SO not intended) to start a thread recently asking what Paul Carrack actually did in Squeeze. As far as I know, "Tempted" is the only popular Squeeze track that includes his vocals. If I'm wrong please correct me.

Also, anyone who owns 21 Good Reasons wouldn't have to read liner notes to associate his voice with those songs. Of course, when I first saw this CD, just like most other people I know, the first words out of my mouth were "he sang on THAT?"

Both of the "other" singers in LaBelle -- Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash -- have enjoyed interesting career paths that have their voices all over several well-known recordings without achieving solo stardom, despite some great records by each. Hendryx (maybe both?) were on Alice Cooper's Muscle of Love, and all three sang on that Laura Nyro album. Both were part of the big Talking Heads touring band, and Dash became a full-time X-Pensive Wino and de facto Rolling Stone. You'd probably have to do some research to list all the hit records their voices have been on, and not always as back-ups, either.

I'll bet lots of people know Gail Ann Dorsey's work without knowing who she is. She's been a little too prominent (and her appearance a little too distinctive) to fade into the background as a studio whiz, but pretty under-the-radar as a rock star. She was in Gang of Four, played on huge hit records by The The and Tears for Fears, and has been seen by millions with Bowie (who always gives her a solo turn of some sort). She's also a big name with another audience due her work with persons like the Indigo Girls and Dar Williams. Her solo album Corporate World is great, too.

I heard a song in a store about...2 months ago. I didn't know the title of it, but I knew it was Paul Carrack. I vaguely remembered the song, but I found it completely and utterly IRRITATING. Even though I had heard it before, I now found it strangely, unbelievably IRRITATING, this song. More than any other piece of music I'd heard in a store until that moment, aside from maybe Whitney Houston's "I will always love you..."

So then I noticed this thread came up, and I was determined to find out what awful, awful song that really was that I heard that day: give it a name, right? And I have succeeded. It is Mike & The Mechanics "The Living Years" and I want to invite you all to the bonfire that is going to take place, we are going to burn every single copy of this song we can find. It's going to be a blast. Join me at the end of October.

Carrack's on Michael Shelley's show right now, https://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/93195 , and said that "How Long" was more or less his first lead vocal. Just backing vocals here and there prior to that. Amazing.
