Half of the art-punk bands from Northern Ohio in the late '70s/ early '80s (Mirrors, Styrenes, Rocket from the Tombs, Human Switchboard) have better Lou Reed/Velvet Underground rips than anything mentioned on this thread (sorry, don't have time to check the other thread that Fritz linked to). As do some later Northern Ohio bands like Death of Samantha and Prisonshake and Vertical Slit/V3 (and maybe Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments and Cobra Verde), and some other bands like the Girls (from Boston) who merely *sounded* like they could have come from Northern Ohio. Somewhere way down below them would be a number of New Zealand/Flying Nun bands from the mid to late '80s. Beyond that, perhaps a few tracks mentioned above might make sense.

Okay, just checked the other thread, and yeah, I'd forgotten about "Queen Bitch," which may well deserve first place in this race, and "Rainy Day Sunshine Girl," which'd place ahead of most New Zealand stuff if not most Cleveland and Akron stuff. (Dream Syndicate get an asterisk; they qualify mainly if you pay more attention to Karl Precoda than the Steve Wynn, which might not be copacetic.)

(Those Vulgar Boatmen/Fall/Feelies tracks above are real good, though; I'm not denying that. And yeah, okay, maybe a few of them would indeed rank ahead of the Verlaines or Chills or Cannanes (Australia not NZ I guess) or whoever, so never mind.)

Anyway, you people REALLY need to check out "Refrigerator Door" by Human Switchboard and "Shirley" by the Mirrors and "Amphetamine" by Death of Samantha or "Sylvia Plath" by Peter Laughner (or Death of Samantha's cover of that one) regardless, if you've never heard them. I guarantee you'll see what I mean about Ohio.
