Throbbing Gristle - "Very Friendly"

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:37 (nineteen years ago) link

How about

Margaret Says - The Vulgar Boatmen

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, I wouldn't call 'em the "best" but you could pretty much cherry-pick the Luna catalog.

England's Glory (Peter Perrit's old band before he formed the Only Ones)

Also, Pavement's entire career to thread.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 19 November 2004 18:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Good call on both, Mr. Snrub! I was thinking of putting something from the Only Ones themselves, but they didn't quite make it.

Mike Rep and the Quotas "Heroes and Idols"

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Friday, 19 November 2004 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Half of the art-punk bands from Northern Ohio in the late '70s/ early '80s (Mirrors, Styrenes, Rocket from the Tombs, Human Switchboard) have better Lou Reed/Velvet Underground rips than anything mentioned on this thread (sorry, don't have time to check the other thread that Fritz linked to). As do some later Northern Ohio bands like Death of Samantha and Prisonshake and Vertical Slit/V3 (and maybe Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments and Cobra Verde), and some other bands like the Girls (from Boston) who merely *sounded* like they could have come from Northern Ohio. Somewhere way down below them would be a number of New Zealand/Flying Nun bands from the mid to late '80s. Beyond that, perhaps a few tracks mentioned above might make sense.

chuck, Friday, 19 November 2004 20:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, just checked the other thread, and yeah, I'd forgotten about "Queen Bitch," which may well deserve first place in this race, and "Rainy Day Sunshine Girl," which'd place ahead of most New Zealand stuff if not most Cleveland and Akron stuff. (Dream Syndicate get an asterisk; they qualify mainly if you pay more attention to Karl Precoda than the Steve Wynn, which might not be copacetic.)

chuck, Friday, 19 November 2004 20:53 (nineteen years ago) link

(Those Vulgar Boatmen/Fall/Feelies tracks above are real good, though; I'm not denying that. And yeah, okay, maybe a few of them would indeed rank ahead of the Verlaines or Chills or Cannanes (Australia not NZ I guess) or whoever, so never mind.)

chuck, Friday, 19 November 2004 20:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Anyway, you people REALLY need to check out "Refrigerator Door" by Human Switchboard and "Shirley" by the Mirrors and "Amphetamine" by Death of Samantha or "Sylvia Plath" by Peter Laughner (or Death of Samantha's cover of that one) regardless, if you've never heard them. I guarantee you'll see what I mean about Ohio.

The Real Kids - "Just Like Darts" for VU ballad-style. Check that rhythm guitar.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Which I mentioned in the previous thread.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I just listened to that Real Kids song, and you are right. I never noticed before as the vocals as so different, but that guitar line, sheesh, totally . . .

In his list of Velvets worshiping art-punk, Chuck forgot to mention the Bizarros. Their first album has that back room Velvets rehearsal room vibe down cold.

Cher UK "Baldie" is a virtual rewrite of "Femme Fatale" but I don't know if anyone even remembers the band or this kinda cool album:

"Yo La Tengo is great, scott. I figure they'd be right up yr alley..."

i listened to the wrong album first! sometimes that happens with me and it takes me years to recover.

scott seward, Friday, 22 April 2011 00:00 (twelve years ago) link

And not to be all obscure, but there's this killer live show with Blegvad fronting the Golden Palominos where they do a *way* Lou Reed-y version of Special Delivery that just kills the original version.

dlp9001, Friday, 22 April 2011 00:01 (twelve years ago) link

The Vaselines album released last year is full of faux Reed.

Stupid reviewers always compared them to Pavement, but he's clearly doing Lou Reed if Lou had been a member of Robert Chambers' crowd, or maybe the Last Days of Disco folk. Also I really, really love this video...
