I second the Girls in the Garage comp suggestions (oddly both made by fellow SF residents). I have Vol. 2 and it R0XX0R!

There's a great, very cheap 3 CD set called 'Chapel of Love and other great girl group gems'. No Spector on it, but some Shangri-Las and Dixie Cups. For Spector there's the best of CDs or the boxed set (not all girl groups, but still...)

yeah, people have named a lot of good ones but I'll flip through some of mine when I get home.

for more obscure stuff, I really like "Dream Babies" - which has The Girls' "Chico's Girl" and The Satisfactions' "Daddy, You just Gottta Let Him In" - which are both "He's Not A Rebel" style love songs to bad boys...

the oriental special girls in the garage is fab! i also like volume 7, because it has "7 heures du matin" by jacqueline taieb. i can't remember the other volume i love, but it has "cleo cleopatra" by kari lynn on it. this song is necessary for a happy life.

not entirely girl group, but the "Red Bird Story" double LP set issued by Charly has some Shangri-Las, Dixie Cups and AdLibs stuff on it. not exactly obscurities, but grand stuff, anyway.

One Kiss Can Lead to Another is a bit of a canon choice now, but it's REALLY good. Cool packaging as well!

The Ace Records "Early Girls" discs (5 volumes so far) are excellent collections of hits, forgotten hits and collector faves. They're a good next-step following the Rhino "Best of the Girl Groups" and "One Kiss Can Lead to Another" comps.

(Speaking of "One Kiss...": Sequel please, Rhino!)

there's an amazing (mainly soul) record store out here in sf named rooky ricardo's where the owner makes a bunch of bootleg cd compilations and sells them for like $5 each. picked up a couple AMAZING girl group ones, some incredibly rare and not so rare stuff in there but all in all both are great listens. seemed like a good way to get people to come back to the shop too, looking for vinyl versions of their favorite songs off the cds, etc

I almost ordered this on a whim after scrolling up and seeing it (it’s been a while since I’ve bought a girl group CD)... but first I went to my shelf, and found I already have it; and had marked only track “8” with a Post-it note on the front (meaning I found that to be the only notable track that I didn’t already have elsewhere).
