oh I see "Jungle Love" peaked in '85. fine then, nevermind

aahh shit Gabbo, you break my heart; i'm overcome with nostalgia. Are you kidding me, this looks like the best year ever!! Actually, this kinda throws into relief the whole '84 is "the best" theme ... cos when I look at that tracklist I realize that this is when I was really irreversably falling in love with music. So much astounding stuff on that list ... and a lotta the release dates, I gotta confess, I had completely WRONG in my head. It's a great track list because it shows how heterogeneous the pop music landscape was, as well as the nascent underground (SY, puppets). I only tend to remember the pop stuff at first blush ... but christ was there a lot of amazing shit getting laid down..

Couple of head-slapping points I had, merely as a result of perusing the tracklist:

-P.S.K. - what a way to start (but what does it mean??)

-Jesus & Mary Chain in 1985 = In -FUCKING -sane. Always loved them, but I seriously need to personally reevaluate just what those two were up to. I can't get my head round the fact that their shit was birthed side-by-side with "Miami Vice Theme" and "Neutron Dance" (love both those cuts, btw; but the point is how oblivious I was to any kind of underground at that point). It's projects like these CDRs - which kinda force these introductions between strange bedfellows and afford the opportunity for reevaluation - which reinforces my love of music.

- It always seemed like that darn Van Halen breakup came later, for some reason. Yes, I realize the last album was called 1984; but shit, it always felt like classic Van Halen was with us for a greater portion of the 80's.... Man, it's hard to imagine that Roth solo cut sitting side-by-side with something like "Take On Me" (one of my favoritest songs EVER; yes, I still own the picture sleeve 45 of the fucker I bought back in '85), but I guess that's my own selective memory at work.

- 2 Live Crew's "We Want Some Pussy"? Haha! I can't believe that thing came out that early.

- It's weird too cos Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary" seems so nascent "alternative" (and thereby really kinda later 90s); did that fuckin thing really come out in '85??

I think the main thing I come away with, is how much amazing music was made by heroes of mine seemingly oblivious to each other. Like, many tracks on that comp are burned in my branebox. Compiled together like that it strikes me how disparate everything was in those days; my knee-jerk response is to think of all the prominent pop crap I loved so dearly. Nice one.

christ I don't even know what I was trying to say in that last para;

back from the bar; drunk........

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 19 September 2003 05:55 (twenty years ago) link

also, "Sussudio" was one of the first videos I really looked forward to.

For some reason, a young Mr. Diamond really enjoyed the spectacle of a balding Phil Collins keeping his arms really close to his chest whilst he danced in front of a microphone. But christ did that groove EXPLODE out of the speakers on "Friday Night Videos".

Woohoo! Some other tracks I guess would have made mine:

The Colour Field: "Castles in the Air"
The Cure: "Close to Me"
Dead Or Alive: "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)"
Dream Academy: "Life in a Northern Town"
Propaganda: "P:Machinery"

and, ducking in advance, maybe even

Marillion: "Kayleigh"

Damn, that's impressive. I'd've thrown in Naked Raygun's "Rat Patrol" or the Misfits' "TV Casualty" or Tom Waits' "Jockey Full of Bourbon", but it's still strong without 'em.

why do i remember rock the bells coming out in 84? could i have heard it or Radio in 84? yeah, memory is weird. and annhilate this week was on Loose Nut right? i definitely don't remember that being 85. jeez. ah, but i remember picking up the 12 inch of Primitive painters at Tower in manhattan like it was yesterday! even though it was 18 years ago. and i just bought the Felt dvd yesterday! great mix, jess.

if you're American then "Life In A Northern Town" is 1986 - mind you so is Duran's "Notorious" which gabbo did include ...

Waaaiiitt...Coil's "Tainted Love" is totally 1984. AND FUCKING FUCKING FUCK I want "How Soon Is Now?" on MINE. It was on an 1984 album and it even wound up on Peel's Festive 50 for '84!

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 4 December 2003 04:51 (twenty years ago) link

You really, really need Sheila E's Glamorous life and Colourbox's The moon is blue. Plus as I'm feeling pedantic Moments in love goes way back to '83 on the Into battle with AON EP..

'glamorous life' was '84. but 'a love bizarre' was on her '85 lp!

jesso, gonna have to be a nitbicky pitch here, but Art of Noise's "Moments in Love" is originally from 1983, and the redone version is from 1984. Besides, you ignored "In Visible Silence" from 1985, which has plenty of good stuff on it!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:27 (twenty years ago) link
