Was it worth it to buy "NYC Ghosts + Flowers" new for $3

i think it's awesome. the title track is worth $3 alone, doubtless lots more. 'free city rhymes' is gorgeous too, thurston mixing the 'free'impulses of SY's more 'out' stuff with the trad melodicism of SY's more canonical works. and Renegade Princess is as convincing a rockout as they've laid down inthe last couple of LPs. great, though Murray Street is the true second (or nth) coming of the Youth.

I liked the album a lot. I thought it was a return to form over the terrible A Thousand Leaves (and it's considerably better than Murray Street). Go ahead and spend the $3.

i couldn't stand it for a long time, but the other night I put it on as a last resort after i couldn't find my copy of Washing Machine, and in light of me falling in love w/ Murray St. it's aged pretty well. it's all still downhill from "Free City Rhymes" but i can tolerate it a bit better. the instrumental versions they played at Bumbershoot still trump it by a long shot, though. if you're a geek like me who can find worth in even SY's most meager turds then yes, $3 is fair.

I'm a rock fan, I love riffs, and I like NYCG&F a lot. you can have it both ways.

this record is really underrated. outside of some sort of embarrassing lyrics (even by embarrassing kim g. lyrics standards the boys go to jupiter thing is bad), it's really a gorgeous sprawl...

As years and years go by, this album keeps growing on me. Even beyond Free City Rhymes, which is my pick for their last great song. The lyric thing kind of wears off after time, and I've never had a problem with Jupiter/stupider. At some point there should be a deluxe version and the inevitable critical reappraisal. Playing the end of renegade princess at the moment, which almost sounds like a throwback to Bad Moon Rising (good thing). At the very least, the final time they seemed to be taking any real chances/doing anything particular unpredictable.

a few 'karen revisted' -type outros on this album, loose and sprawl-y

the worst thing about this record is the cover art which is cheap and lame looking

inevitable critical reappraisal

Brent Dicrescenzo has already reappraised it: http://www.timeout.com/chicago/things-to-do/i-gave-sonic-youth-a-0-0-rating-on-pitchfork

I'm a little ambivalent about this album. I think it displays great ideas that are not always fully realized (or that are sometimes bogged down by crappy poetry:P). I agree that it seems like the last time they really challenged themselves, in this case by trying to integrate ideas from out improv and the avant-garde electronica of that time into their songs. The way they played with polymetre in "Free City Rhymes" was pretty unique for them, and in some ways more challenging than what they did on "Rain on Tin", which I also love. I'd still rank that as one of their best songs.

Ha, just put it on, loved FCR, and turned it off partway through "Renegade Princess".

It really is but... you could easily download the decent-sounding boot for free even about a month ago. (I think it was you who shared it here?) I imagine the sound is better on this but it would have to be pretty pristine to justify paying $14 USD. A lot of these live shows they're releasing officially now really are great but I'm having trouble swallowing how much they are charging.
