Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe my brother told her...?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

It's your MOM. Get over it and buy the nice lady dinner.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

How's Madison, Amateurist? I'm moving to the near east side in a few months, most likely.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Chris, I totally would, but after the last few years of just spending money willy-nilly and never balancing my checkbook, I've been evaluating my finances lately and noticing a rapid decline in my savings. So I'm probably being a little more assiduous than usual lately about not spending too much money.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:31 (seventeen years ago) link

it's your mom. she'll probably be understanding if you explain. and you did get her a gift certificate...

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, my mom is usually understanding. I don't know if I should wait until the check comes and see what she does or if I should just say something straight-away. (I'm still hoping I misunderstood her.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh: I just listened to the voice mail again: she says, "...I think you're taking me out, but I'm not sure."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 21:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I would go with "It's your mom, and so this isn't the place to be more assiduous than usual, you cheapskate." Nick, of Nick and Nora, works at Marigold. Let us know how it is, John.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:19 (seventeen years ago) link

BUT LISTEN UP FUCKERS! I have two important announements:

1. If you come to our front gate and want to get inside, dial 29 on the keypad and hope that Jeff is home since that goes to his cell phone. We don't actually know how to open the door with the phone, but we'll at least know you're there.

2. My graduation from law school is May 20, 2007. There are no tickets, so if you want to suffer through the ceremony, come on along. I am also having some sort of party, hopefully planned by someone who isn't me. So save the date, because after that, you won't see my ass until the beginning of August, after I take the bar.

JENNY OVER AND OUT.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I skipped out early on my high school graduation festivities and didn't go to my undergraduate graduation because I was too cool for all that but this time I'm taking more of a "This sucked too hard not to clearly and publicly mark the achievement in some way" point of view and it's all important to me and stuff and junk.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I agree with Jenny agreeing with me. You don't save money by not being generous to your mom (or your friends or other loved ones), you do it by cutting back on moneys you spend on yourself. Only be cheap to mom if it means you won't make rent.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 00:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Whatever, dudes. I gave my mom the gift certificate, and then when the check came, she was all, "Let me get this one. I know you talked about paying, but you already gave me a present, and this is a lot more money to you than it is to me." I sheepishly said that I'd been worrying about it, in fact, and she gave me a pitying look and said, "Oh no no, you shouldn't worry about it, it's really nothing." She was very happy with the gift certificate.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 01:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyway, I don't think I'm being a cheapskate just because I decided not to spend $65 (including tip) on a birthday gift! I don't think I've ever spent that much on anyone for anything. My mom recognized that it would've been extravagant.

The food, btw, was delicious. Nick did not serve us, though. Some kooky middle-aged ditz was our waitress. She grinned maniacally and said things like, "Ohhhh, isn't it gooooood?" and "You guys are so funny!!" -- even though we hadn't said anything. Then she did a "Psst, see those two ladies over there? One of them ate all of her lamb vindaloo! I don't know she did it, it's really spicy!!"

I'm Sorry For This Thread (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 03:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh man, that is so great.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 03:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Tonight was fun. I finished my Flann O'Brien book, took a nap, went to the gym, met some dudes for wings, and then popped over to a jam session and played some second-line. Couldn't ask for anything more.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 03:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Jordan, you book club could read For Common Things: Irony, Trust and Commitment in America Today.

John, you could save yourself money by taking your mom out to any of the bars that offer dollar burgers on Tuesdays.

I found another band interested in covering a full LP, probably d'Angelo's Voodoo.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 04:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Which Flann O'Brien? I've read At Swim Two Birds and another one (Dalkey something?), both of which were pretty great.

I just finished the newer Peter Carey novel, Theft, which was really good. I think I need to read a bunch of his other books, since Illywhacker was good too.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Kinda pathetic: I'm so Excited* about my mini road trip to Baton Rouge that I woke up at 5 and couldn't go back to sleep so I finally just got up and started getting ready.

I'm gonna go for a jog, getting some coffee and hitting the road at 7.

*WTF? Am I James Frye now?

I got confused, I killed a horse (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Nick, I just read At Swim-Two-Birds, I really liked it. The Third Policemen is one of my book club ideas (and I will check out the books that you guys mentioned).

I found another band interested in covering a full LP, probably d'Angelo's Voodoo.

What is this for? 'Cause I would LOVE to cover Voodoo.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 11:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I decided not to spend $65 (including tip) on a birthday gift!

can we change the name of this thread to "Chicago: I'm Not Gonna Pay A Lot For This Mother"?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 12:14 (seventeen years ago) link

HA!

Jenny, you will see everyone between May 20th and August whatever because The Wedding is June 2nd. Attendance is mandatory! YOU WILL HAVE FUN! AnD DANCE!

http://www.makelovenotdebt.com/images/bridezilla.jpg

John, I can't believe you've never spent more than $65 on a gift!? Of course, I'm no model for good budgeting seeing as how I'm tens of thousands of dollars in debt. The pastor we'll probably pick for our ceremony suggested that if either of us has any debt, we should try as hard as we can to pay it off before we get married. If I listened to him, I probably wouldn't be able to get married for another 20 years.

Also, Jesse, I LOVE that photo.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 12:29 (seventeen years ago) link

You're worried about dipping into your savings to pay for your mom's birthday gift? Your mom dipped into her savings to buy you a BIRTHDAY, dude.

(note: i am not really "outraged" about this or anything, but seriously, if you're going to dip into savings, Mom is a good reason to do it.)

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 12:46 (seventeen years ago) link

What is this for? 'Cause I would LOVE to cover Voodoo.

The idea of putting together a regular night of bands covering entire LPs beginning-to-end. If this gets rolling, you should bring one of your bands to town and do it.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 12:48 (seventeen years ago) link

John, I'm amazed you have savings. That is commendable.

I wish the Ice Factory would host our album covering project. Then it could become a monthly event (with different bands each time). Speaking of IF, Crap Eng1ne is breaking up.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 12:53 (seventeen years ago) link

John, I'm amazing your mom is hip enough to appreciate an iTunes gift certificate.

The album covering idea is great, too bad none of my bands would really fit. The rock band doesn't really do covers. The Kid Jordan Second Line (my new traditional jazz band!) was started to cover a whole album, but it's so obscure that no one would care

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:02 (seventeen years ago) link

John, I'm amazing
Jordan, are you feeling particularly self-confident today? :-D

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyway, you should still cover that album. The fact that it's so obscure is part of the charm of the project.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha, whoops.

It would be cool to take that band to Chicago since our saxophonist lives there and my friend Scott could play bass, but we would need a local dude who can play New Orleans piano.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:11 (seventeen years ago) link

John, I can't believe you've never spent more than $65 on a gift!?

When would I have ever done this? I mean, I think last Christmas my brother and I spent somewhere in that range, probably a little bit more, on each parent, but that was split between the two of us. Unevenly, since he's a student, but still.

I'm still feeling weird and guilty about the whole thing, especially because of some of the responses I got on this thread. And then Kr said something about how she would've paid for the dinner because she feels like she owes her parents for helping to put her through college. And I was just like, "Huh. That's never occurred to me." I mean, obviously I'm grateful that they did, and I know that not all people are so lucky, but I've never considered that I was forever in their debt or anything -- they've certainly never made me feel that way.

Did I mention my mom makes like four times as much as I do?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:44 (seventeen years ago) link

And your mom has house payments and car payments and raised two children already and put them both through college and has to save for her retirement.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:45 (seventeen years ago) link

GRRRRRRR.

(btw, I would love to cover a whole album, but a) C4n4st4 would probably take like two years to actually do it, and b) the only thing we'd be able to agree upon is some middlebrow crap like Flaming Lips or whatever.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Fuck all of you. Seriously.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:46 (seventeen years ago) link

John, it will be OK. I'm sure your mom loves you just the same. She understands. Maybe next time - Christmas? - you could spend slightly less money on beer for a couple of weeks to save up money for a nice present.

As someone whose parents did not help her out with school, I often find myself annoyed with kids who don't seem entirely grateful of said help. It really puts you ahead of the game to start out into the world as an adult without miles of debt. SO APPRECIATE IT! Love, me

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Fine, you guys win, I'm going to write my mom a check for $1000 tomorrow, better?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:50 (seventeen years ago) link

It really puts you ahead of the game to start out into the world as an adult without miles of debt.

I really, really appreciate it.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:53 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm taking john's mom out for lunch tomorrow, anyone want to come with? my treat.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:55 (seventeen years ago) link

note: offer not open to john.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Look, I appreciate it, too! I've seen my friends live from paycheck to paycheck and am glad I don't have to do that, too. But is the only way I can show my appreciation by shelling out money that will deplete my finances more than it will hers? I mean, just because I don't have debt doesn't mean I'm Mr. Moneybags over here. And I can't imagine ever making as much as either of my parents within my lifetime.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 13:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Goddamn, I'm trying to do a good thing here.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 14:00 (seventeen years ago) link

When Mom rides free we all pay.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 14:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Still curious how I would've ever spent more than $65 on a gift. Do you guys do that routinely?

I am trying to think of things I have spent more than $65 on, period -- besides rent and bills.

Computer
iPod
Keyboard
Sofa
Coffee table
Hotel room
Car maintenance
External hard drive
??

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 14:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Sometime when you're a little flush, take her out somewhere really nice.

When I got a salaried job (after years of scraping by), I took my folks out to a few fancy dinners in CA. It was a time when I was thinking that they didn't know much about what I was doing in Chicago, or didn't understand the creative stuff I was doing, or whatever, but, in a superficial way, if friends of theirs asked them what they were up to they could say "Well, Eric took us to the French Laundry."

Only trouble was that the dinner ended up being talking about the cost of it much of the time.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Also more than $65:

Suit

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 14:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't buy $65+ gifts every day, or even on a regular basis! But at Christmas, that's about my average range per family member and I have certainly gone over that on occasion, like the pair of Frye motorcycle boots for my rockstar ex. Which were worth it, cos they made him two inches taller.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 14:07 (seventeen years ago) link
