how do you know if you have a hernia?

Hahaha, niiiiiice Tracer, nice.

I have just registered with a new GP local to our new house, and I have an appointment next Wednesday afternoon.

I also spoke to my brother and my mum - they have both had abdominal hernias; my mum's was got rid of via surgery, my brother's is very minor and has not had anything done with it - he was told if it goes at all hard or causes him pain to go back straight away though. It's been five years now at least judging by this thread. My dad's hernia was a groin one, and unpleasant.

one month passes...

I am going to be operated on in approx 4-8 weeks.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 6 October 2008 15:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Had the op on mine about 5 weeks ago under general anaesthetic. Took about two weeks to get over it, first week it was as sore as anything, felt like I'd been hoofed in the guts by a donkey. Fine now though, back to running and everything. Good luck with yours!

Try inguinal for true agony.

Yeah, it was an inguinal hernia as it happens. Pain wasn't too bad straight after cos they really loaded up that area with some sort of pain killers, but once they started wearing off - oof! Major upside was that you can't really do much other than lie on your back reading books all day, so managed to make some headway into heaps of the unread.

direct or indirect?

Hang in there! You've got the right stereo to be able to cope with whatever boredom staying on your back provokes.

man i do not envy how sore you're going to be for the next couple of weeks. i'm a veteran of not one but two inguinal hernia operations, one when i was 18 and another when i was like 22. apparently some people are genetically predisposed : /

I feel pretty fine now, but I imagine I'm hopped up pretty well on pain killers. Obv. mine's abdominal rather than inguinal, so may hurt less anyway. I'm wandering around demanding brownies and irritating my girlfriend at the moment.

Sounds about right will. My grandad had a couple and I've had two as well, one on each side. First one was when I was 7.

xx-post ARGGHHH!

The red / pinkness isn't soreness or anything, btw; it's just the stuff they wash over you before they cut you open. I was expecting it to be yellow. Like iodine?

Here's a tip, though. When you go to your GP to get it checked out, don't bring your girlfriend in at the same time. Especially if she needs her breast examined for lumps that day. By the same GP. I'm... just saying.

eight years pass...

Well Friday was an interesting day. (Go in for surgery on one side, learn beforehand from the doctor that your hunch was right and that there was one on the other side. Needless to say I immediately approved going bilateral and being done with it.)
Am currently still a bit sore.

What's recovery typically like from the inguinal hernia? Should it still be sore three weeks later??

djh, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 09:12 (two years ago) link

In my experience, yes.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 11:05 (two years ago) link

Though I notice someone upthread says the pain fades after two weeks. Maybe speak to your doctor to make sure. Having a hernia is literally the worst pain I've ever felt in my life.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 11:08 (two years ago) link

To be accurate, the post-operative pain.

calzino, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 11:18 (two years ago) link

Thanks Tom D.

I've found it uncomfortable more than hideously painful but there are definitely days when I've found it a bit draining.

djh, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:55 (two years ago) link

Yes, I think the levels of pain experienced can vary greatly!

My hernia scar has started bleeding 12 or so weeks after the operation and it feels like the hernia has re-happened. Do they tend to be re-treated?

djh, Monday, 21 June 2021 18:38 (two years ago) link

Delayed response — generally speaking they shouldn’t but it can happen. I had an ultrasound done in December to double check on some irritation in the area and thankfully all was okay, but it can’t hurt to do similar if it’s an option for you.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 July 2021 13:32 (two years ago) link

I had a hernia operation when I was 10. For a couple of months after, the scar wouldn't completely heal, leaking little bits of pus through a tiny hole. Every week or two, out would pop a small knot of black thread--I was rejecting the sutures.

I kept them in an empty One-a-Day vitamin bottle, like you do when you're 10.
