actually it isn;t a club ... it's something known in finnish as "Graafinen suunnittelutoimisto." still, RASTAMAN OY is a pretty cool name for an establishment to have.

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:34 (twenty years ago) link

I thought Spinefarm was a ROCK label in the past. It certainly sounds like one, although they signed my friend's (decidedly non-rock) band, Super.

OY is Finnish for Ltd.

Tag (Tag), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:35 (twenty years ago) link

"Graafinen suunnittelutoimisto" = graphic design office. Spinefarm is indeed a rock/metal label, but their record store used to sell both metal and electronic music. Now it's only metal, sadly.

A weekend (or weekday-avoid the crazy drunken Finns) in Tallinn also very worthwhile. t/'/'t will hopefully concur.

avoid the crazy drunken Finns

That's a fuckin' good advice. If you didn't know, middle-aged Finns take cruises to Tallinn to buy cheap booze and cigarettes, and to act stupid. In the process, they end up ruining the reputation of the rest of us in the eyes of the Tallinners.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 10:09 (twenty years ago) link

I experienced the delights of the Helsinki-Stockholm ferry a few years ago, sharing a cabin with a middle-aged Finn and an exceptionally irritating elderly American who insisted on badmouthing Finns for their lack of hospitality towards a free-spending American tourist. When he left the Finn turned to me and said "Stupid Yankee. We drink wodka now". And we did. The Stockholm archipelago is truly beautiful, and I sincerely wish I hadn't experienced it through one of the worst hangovers of my life.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 10:21 (twenty years ago) link

Those Finland-Sweden cruises used to be the favourite place for youngsters to go boozing up, but nowadays they've raised the age limit ridiculously high (21 or 23) because of a few cases of high schoolers having an alcohol poisoning.

Tuomas, do you know the band Giant Robot? i have an "internet friend" from a few other message boards and through email, Arttu, that's in the band. i've only briefly heard bits of them, but he said they were getting kinda big.

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 22:58 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, as there's already a question 'bout Helsinki musicians, I hope Tuoumas won't mind another one comin' from me. -- PASTACAS? (Rings a bell, no?) He makes slightly loung-y, easy-flowin' computer-derived stuff, plays some flute and guitar as well; he's been living 'over there' for several years now.
Tuomas, I gather you're into varied kinds of 'electronic music', so I thought it wouldn't harm asking. :)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 23:09 (twenty years ago) link

I got to visit Helsinki a few months ago, but the trip mostly consisted of being shuttled around from one Big Cultural Attraction to another. I'll just say that everything was beautiful and well-designed, and all the people were really friendly, and that the number of saunas there is truly remarkable.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 23:27 (twenty years ago) link

Giant Robot is a hip hop/electro/dub crew, their first proper album "Crushing You With Style" was a decent party record, their latest record "Superweekend" is not so good, sounds more like background music. They were supposed to become big, but now I'm not so sure anymore. I think they've been replaced by Don Johnson Big Band, which has similar sound, but with more jazz influences.

Sorry Tiit, I've never heard of Pastacas. The Finnish electronic scene has grown so big, it's hard to keep up with the pace.

the number of saunas there is truly remarkable

Well, sauna is the Finnish national hobby.

ryanair flies into Tampere, is this a good idea, or is it better to pay more and fly into helsinki?

what about the ferry to tallin?

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 21 March 2004 12:43 (twenty years ago) link

ferry to tallinn takes 1 hour 40, thats good

what about the one to stockholm?

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 21 March 2004 16:06 (twenty years ago) link

A train trip from Tampere to Helsinki lasts two hours and costs about 20 euros.

A cruise ship to Stockholm leaves in the afternoon and arrives to Stockholm next morning. A non-cruise ship is probably faster. Be warned that Helsinki-Stockholm and Helsinki-Tallinn cruise ships are likely to be full of drunken Finns, since cruises are a popular pastime amongst middle-aged folks back here.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 March 2004 16:26 (twenty years ago) link

By the way, Tampere is a nice, cozy city in it's own right. It used to be called "The Finnish Manchester", because of it's long history as a working class town. The class issues aren't that big any more, but Tampere still has a less bourgeoise feel than Helsinki.

Ed (dali), Friday, 20 January 2006 06:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm kinda out of the loop on the restaurant scene, since I can't afford to eat out that often. Also, since I've been a vegetarian for the last 9 years, I only know places that serve decent veggie food. I guess I could recommend a couple of those. If you want to meet up or something, you can e-mail me at tuomas dot alho at helsinki dot com. I'm sorry I didn't answer last time, I got your mail a bit too late. What day are you coming here?

I sent you mail, Ed.

-have I been to the most interesting neighbourhood in town (Punavuori)? I'm talking record stores, book stores, places to stay warm, galleries, design studios, etc.

Yeah, for those things the Kamppi-Punavuori area is certainly the best place to go. But for nightlife and general feel I find it kinda posh. Personally I prefer Kallio, which is a more bohemian district, though to some folks it might be a bit too dirty and full of alcoholics and junkies. Each according to his taste.

how Scandinavian

gabbneb, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Jergins, the place in the picture is a night grill which sells hamburgers and stuff (they're common here, people go there once the pubs close). Though this one is ran by some Jesus folks (Tuomas refers to the biblical Thomas), from what I've heard they also hand out Christian tracts.

We're not officially part of Scandinavia, but I think socioculturally we're still closer to the Scandinavian countries than any other region in the world. Or at least to Sweden, I haven't been to the other three.

one year passes...

so I am staying in Töölö next week; any tips on that neighborhood, where to eat, etc.? also I have never been to Helsinki generally so I dunno what else to do there. I'm there to work obv but there will be some time to look around. in particular I'd like to see puzzling Finnish visual art, I want to feel like I'm in an alien place where people eat beaver sausage or vegan beaver sausage or whatever, rather than another European mall (unless the mall has puzzling visual art and sells beaver sausage)

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 09:36 (eight years ago) link

Well, in Töölö you have this place, which is a combined restaurant/pub/gallery/music and theatre venue, it's well worth a visit:
http://www.korjaamo.fi/en

Also in Töölö is one of the famoust art galleries in the town:
http://taidehalli.fi/en

If you want to eat some "authentic" Finnish food, you should visit one of the street grills, they're very popular after the pubs close. This one is probably the most famous, and it's also in Töölö, near the Parliament House:
https://fi-fi.facebook.com/pages/Jaskan-Grilli/111680452244862

Tuomas, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 11:07 (eight years ago) link

Oh, and if you're here on April 30th/May 1st, there'll be loads of people on the streets. May 1st is a national holiday, and traditionally both students and left-wing parties celebrate the day, so there'll be some street rallies (probably not in Töölö though, it's a fairly bourgeoise area) and people having picnics while wearing their "student hats". (The hat is something you get once you graduate from the gymnasium, and a lot of older people wear it on May 1st too.) On both days there'll also be a lot of students on the streets drinking booze and wearing all sorts of coloured overalls. (Different schools each have their own type of overalls with their own colour.) It's basically the closest thing Finland has to a carneval.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 11:14 (eight years ago) link

Cool thanks! I'm leaving fairly late on the 30th.

My wife and I went to Estonia for the national Song Festival and traveled around there for about a week, and now we are in Helsinki for a few days before we go back to Chicago. Today we went to Suomelinna and then wandered around the Design District for a bit. Before we leave, we're planning to go to a couple of museums and maybe a sauna. What are you up to? Wanna hang out? We're staying in Kallio.
