are you guys going to watch the meteor shower this weekend?

We happened to be traveling through southern Arizona during the Leonids in 2001, and getting up pre-dawn for a long day of driving was worth it for the light show.

I watched the Leonids in '01 and it happened to fall on my birthday, which was pretty cool. It didn't stop the next year from being among the worst in my life, but hey...

Hey I remember the 2001 Leonids, you could see them from Australia (which never usually happens). It was pretty awesome, though cloudy for most of it.

I really hope it's a clear night! I love meteor showers.

I was going to say, fat chance in foggy SF but I'll be in Tahoe, so I'll look for them. When I was a kid in Yosemite, I used to sleep outside to watch them.

Since you were raised by wolves, didn't you always sleep outside?

I've watched them the last two years here. Last night was no good though.

Clear night tonight (for the midlands anyway) so maybe get to see 1 or 2 yet.

You lucky sods, we hardly ever get meteor showers down here :( There was one time in 2001 where we could see the Leonids... that aside I dont know if there's any we get to view. I did find a site saing the southern somethingsomethings are visible down here during august but it's been cloudy all week anyway.

I think you could only see see these suckers from Brisbane northwards.

Sat outside and watched for about 20 minutes, saw a few small ones and one really nice big streak, but there's a thunderstorm approaching and the lightning blows out my night-sky acclimation every few minutes.

This should be a great show here in Baja with relatively little light pollution and almost-always-clear skies; of course tonight appears a bit overcast. Will still go out and have a look--saw some nice stuff late last week.

Had hoped beyond hope I might see something down this end of the earth, but its probably onlu likely for people in like, the northern territory/nth queensland.

Stood outside for 15 mins last night anyway freezing my ass off, but nada. As luck would have it a mate of mine is currently on a tour of Kings Canyon near Uluru, and will get a glorious desert-sky view of it if its at all visible in the south.

I've never had much luck with these in the UK - only ever corner-of-eye glimpses, wondering if they were even a thing or not - but remember seeing an amazing display from Portugal one year.

I actually have very easy access to a large expanse of flat roof to lie on, and can take up a blanket and everything :)

Draconid meteor shower didn't light up my sky tonight, but Stellar Regions delivered - it always does. But there was a very pretty rapidly rising harvest moon, that looked quite massive at one point.

went w/ a couple friends to watch the perseid meteor shower on saturday night at a dark sky park, it was pretty cool. my friend brought his 10-inch telescope - this thing was huge, about 4 or 5 long - and i saw saturn's rings and a few of its moons. it was spectacular. clouds were coming in quickly so we had only a limited amount of time but we also looked at mars, double cluster, and the ring nebula

tried but too much light pollution in town and didn't have energy-motivation to drive out where it was dark

We drove up to the top of the Grapevine on the old Ridge Route Rd. Decently dark place to go without driving more than 1hr. Good show - one bright one every couple of minutes.

A piece of burning rocket debris seen streaking across the Pacific Northwest sky last week crashed on a farm in eastern Washington state, authorities said.

After the March 25 event, a farmer discovered a nearly intact piece of rocket in a private field, The Tri-City Herald reported.

The approximately 5-foot (1.5-meter) composite-overwrapped pressure vessel used for storing helium left a nearly 4-inch (10.16-centimeter) dent in the ground, Grant County sheriff's spokesman Kyle Foreman said. No one was hurt, he said.

The National Weather Service in Seattle has said the widely reported bright objects in the sky on March 25 were remnants of the second stage of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket leaving comet-like trails as they burned up upon reentry to the Earth's atmosphere.

The farmer, who authorities said didn't want to be identified, suspected the debris may have come from the rocket and left a message with the sheriff's office over the weekend, Foreman said. Deputies responded Monday and contacted SpaceX officials. SpaceX confirmed it was part of the rocket and has since retrieved it, Foreman said.
