Gene Lees is the co-writer of "Waltz For Debby"? Is there a version with lyrics?

Wait, do lyricists get royalties for instrumental versions of their songs?
― Albert Jeans (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 00:14 (fifteen years ago) link
I dunno, probably. But surely in this case he added the lyrics after the fact, after the song had already been written and recorded so I don't why they would put his name there. Maybe one of the other four people on the thread can help us.
― Retrato Em Redd E Blecch (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 02:29 (fifteen years ago) link
Yes they do. The default position for royalties is that lyricists get their share even for instrumentals, unless they reach a different agreement. By the same token, if there's both a lyricist and a music composer, royalties for printed lyrics go to both co-writers.
In this case though, BMI has the song registered twice (one credited to Evans and the other to Evans/Lees), so if they're doing they're accounting correctly I'd think Lees would get royalties only for vocal versions. And yes, he must have added lyrics later, my copy of the record has no lyrics and doesn't give his name in the credits.

Will have to check that out cheers.
Fwiw, I would have gone for Some Other Time - just for LaFaro's bass, which sounds utterly extraordinary.

it's kind of crazy to me how good the village vanguard tapes sound -- obviously the engineer knew what he was doing, but this must've just been a band that recorded extremely well, everything perfectly placed.

was just listening to Solar off that Sunday at the Village Vanguard album - more than pretty sweet, just quite amazing!

I heard a track at random today and the quality of the recording really jumped out
this audiophile vinyl review includes some cool gear photos and recording information: http://soundevaluations.blogspot.com/2017/07/bill-evans-trio-sunday-at-village.html
"Produced by Orrin Keepnews, and captured magically by recording engineer Dave Jones -- with three mics, mixed in an Ampex MX-35 tube mic/line mixer-preamp onto an Ampex 350-2 or 351-2 two-track running Scotch 111 at 15 ips -- alongside subtle tinkling glass intrusions, minimal chatter interventions, and 'polite' applause ..."

Ph man, great thread, new to me---was just thinking about local jazz station's rerun of a Night Lights segment, on Evans coping with the sudden death of La Faro at the trio's peak (Spoiler: eventually coped as well as possible musically, judging by these selections; offstage not so much: heroin cont. and "La Faro's sister-in-law reported seeing Evans walking around New York in Scott's clothes.") Wonderful show from one of the best jazz series ever: https://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/after-the-vanguard-the-return-of-bill-evans.phpAnd you can search on there for lots more Evans eps.

I love the background noise on these albums - glasses chinking, cutlery. I want to be having lunch while digging Bill Evans in Greenwich Village on a Sunday in the early 60s.
