al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

haha. yeah it's a great piece. but i want to know more about adam sachs, not adam gollner! :)

sean gramophone, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:39 (thirteen years ago) link

what do you want to know

(i dont know anything)

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Can I move there? Do they like foreign people?

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:51 (thirteen years ago) link

yes and yes

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Spent a week in Montreal (and three days in Quebec City) for our honeymoon. Such a great place.

da croupier, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:01 (thirteen years ago) link

nice, what did u do?

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I dunno, Canadian immigration people have always been the biggest hardasses to me. Sometimes I fly home with Air Canada and have a layover in Toronto and always get GRILLED. Why am I here? Well, I have a flight to catch and will be leaving in 45 minutes, so I don't really think I'm a danger to your country.

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

It is a VERY great place, and I only really spent something like a day and a half there. Everyone should visit.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

well maybe I think you're a danger to my country adam

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Well I am a bit messy sometimes.

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Still, I like the idea of living in Canada. You never know.

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

You have to watch out for him, he likes to film things. (Wait, who am I warning against who?)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Stayed at one of those boutique hotels by the water (one with awesome fucking room service), went to a ton of restaurants, bought a ton of records, hit that Miles Davis exhibit at the art museum, saw some sights and witnessed some of the glory that was Canada Day and the boiling heat wave that followed (if it had been any other type of vacation I would have dropped you a line, Slock). Don't recognize most of the places in that article but oddly enough I ordered all three things (foie gras poutine, duck-in-a-can, and seafood platters) mentioned being at Restaurant au Pied de Cochon. Even splitting the poutine and the seafood, this was in hindsight a bit too ambitious.

My only complaint was that I couldn't seem to get the right kind of iced latte and wound up hitting starbucks more than I wanted to.

da croupier, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:12 (thirteen years ago) link

oh i coulda helped you with that

glad u had a good time and of course i understand you wouldnt exactly want to be like hey new bride, can we take some time on our honeymoon to meet some random bon vivant from the internet

but if u ever come back, lemme know!!

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:13 (thirteen years ago) link

How big is Montreal? DO many people live in quaint Olde Worlde apartments with high ceilings above patisseries and such? And ride bicycles in elegantly faded clothes?

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:15 (thirteen years ago) link

They definitely ride bicycles.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:16 (thirteen years ago) link

but if u ever come back, lemme know!!

definitely!

da croupier, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:16 (thirteen years ago) link

actually yes

sean gramophone, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Is Montreal on a river? What is the countryside like outside of Montreal?

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

it's IN a river

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

(it's an island)

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow!

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:19 (thirteen years ago) link

I just don't know much about Montreal. All I know is through s1ocki and rrrobyn and I think there were once some olympics there or something. It sounds nice.

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:19 (thirteen years ago) link

there's some really nice countryside not too far away. the laurentian mountains. the eastern townships (really old settlements). vermont is like 45 minute drive.

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link

The mix of stations in French and English was pretty awesome. Loved little details like Two And A Half Men being called "Mon Oncle Charlie." Also appreciated the French pronunciation of "Jack Donaghy"

da croupier, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link

hahaha

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:21 (thirteen years ago) link

i love the movie titles too

for some reason the one that always stood out was BOOTY CALL which was called ALLO BABA! (exclamation mark included)

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Montreal film title translations vs. Helsinki film title translations.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I love the alt. Twilight titles. So much more appropriate.

Simon H., Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

i used to enter the movie listings for my paper (worst job ever btw) and so i read all of them

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

o ya simon i was just chuckling about that today.... eclipse is called TWILIGHT: HESITATION

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

hahahaha

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

also came across some kind of candid camera show called something like "droll and sexy" that seemed to mostly be people being squirted with water and topless women walking out of closets in department stores.

xpost was just about to mention the posters for Twilight: Hesitation

da croupier, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

that's actually what life is like most of the time

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:25 (thirteen years ago) link

btw mazel tov on the whole getting hitched thing

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:25 (thirteen years ago) link

da croupier, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Haha Hesitation

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:27 (thirteen years ago) link

o ya simon i was just chuckling about that today.... eclipse is called TWILIGHT: HESITATION

I saw one of those posters and thought, "Instant improvement."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:27 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean it sort of cuts to the core doesn't it

al-goreda (s1ocki), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I need to see Twilight

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

How big is Montreal? DO many people live in quaint Olde Worlde apartments with high ceilings above patisseries and such? And ride bicycles in elegantly faded clothes?

The population of the island is ~1.5 million, the metropolitan pop. is ~3.5 million.

sofatruck, Thursday, 22 July 2010 19:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Can I move there? Do they like foreign people?

Do you speak French? Then, yes!
Seriously though, if you want to immigrate to Canada and plan to live in Quebec, the province (in addition to the federal government) has to approve your residency there.

kate78, Thursday, 22 July 2010 20:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I used to speak ok French, I went to school in Paris for a brief while. But it was long ago and my French is embarrassing these days. I'm sure it is all in there somewhere.

Hey I was born in 78 too! Or maybe your name is ref. to 78rpm vinyl records

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost- I lived there for 7 years and barely spoke any French. I think it matters in the rest of Quebec but almost not at all in Montreal (unless it's a really francophone neighborhood).

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 22 July 2010 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

it matters if you want to live there as an immigrant.

yay, 1978, xpost.

kate78, Thursday, 22 July 2010 21:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah my French is embarrassingly bad... grew up in the west and haven't had the chance to take classes here but I get by quite easily. But yeah, immigrating is another issue. Have a friend here who did it though (from the USA). She had to do an interview in French, for which she studied like mad for about a month, and passed quite easily.

sofatruck, Thursday, 22 July 2010 21:03 (thirteen years ago) link

for some reason montreal attracts the coolest anglos from the rest of canada, and has a pretty thriving english cool kids community. a lot of the less corny bc dudes move here, loads of haligonians and nova scotians. they're a good crowd. many of my friends live fulfilling and happy lives without significant contact with francophones.

that's not to say you're not missing out, though. french girls are way cuter and often more fun and outgoing than english ones, and although quebecois culture in general is not as appealing to me they are a people who have deep reverence for the sanctity of the leisurely life. lots of drinking beer and just hanging out and cracking jokes goes on.

there are some radical-minded francophones who can be unpleasantly forceful and militant about it, but generally speaking people do appreciate any polite attempt at speaking french. you probably have a better chance of kissing french girls if you've got a bit an accent, anyways.

Reminds me of a guy in La Fontaine Park, always muttering antisemitic garbage to himself, utterly oblivious to the world around him.

No idea if this is relevant here but it also brought to mind this piece from 2014:

It's all part of the globalists' geographically challenged plan to co-opt Quebec into the EU!

I did not expect to see an article about Aunt Dai in… The Guardian:

pomenitul, Friday, 15 January 2021 18:29 (three years ago) link

their website is amazing but tbrrwu i narrowly prefer cuisine szechuan on guy & sherbrooke

flopson, Saturday, 16 January 2021 08:22 (three years ago) link

in re Aunt Dai & truth in advertising, used to crack me up that on one street in Addis there was a place called Excellent Restaurant, a block further you'd reach Decent Restaurant

H in Addis, Saturday, 16 January 2021 09:58 (three years ago) link

I was talking to Raphael as recently as Thursday. I'm still mourning and he dares say such a thing, I'm just so fuckin angry at him.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 19 January 2021 21:46 (three years ago) link

Absolutely heartbreaking. Note that this is the exact same argument deployed by these folks against allowing people of religious communities to wear whatever the fuck they want because "someone might some day pose as a bank robber and rob a bank dressed as a muslim."

Nowhere else is doing especially good right now, but there is a special type of infantile performance art exclusive to paleo-québécois groups like the QAC that really fucking wind me up.

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 20 January 2021 01:12 (three years ago) link

or sorry the CAQ

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 20 January 2021 01:14 (three years ago) link

Homeless community now exempted of the curfew. Thank fuckin god.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 27 January 2021 01:37 (three years ago) link

Based Cour supérieure du Québec. You certainly can't count on the CAQ to do the right thing in this regard.
