been playing that Roc Marciano - Marcberg endorsed by cutty, m@tt & deej the last couple of days & it's really pretty strong. totally convincing rhyme-heavy grimy NY trife talk over boom bap too edgy & too funky to be retro, & no bullshit hooks.
damn i checked this out and yeah its great.

dude was in the UN but lol i only have their pete rock tunes \oo/
― Gohamist (zvookster), Saturday, 19 June 2010 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link
it's a really raw record but also v polished in that the sound is consistent. can't find any production credits? 'pop' sounds like something sid roams would do. 'panic' is totally mesmerising too.
oh it's all produced by him - no way!
― hoes on my dick cos my groceries bagged (tpp), Saturday, 19 June 2010 21:18 (thirteen years ago) link
this is way better than the UN iirc but its been a while
― hoes on my dick cos my groceries bagged (tpp), Saturday, 19 June 2010 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link
I'll have to check that out--loved UN or U Out
― President Keyes, Saturday, 19 June 2010 22:26 (thirteen years ago) link
i like that rocko and have no problem with the fact that regardless i have no desire whatsoever to hear the rest of that mixtape. i'm kind of suspicious of marciano partly because the writeup on the link upthread promised "no hooks just real rap." b-but i like hooks. anyways zvookter's post is a pretty appealing combination of cool sounding words so i'm going to check it out
― samosa gibreel, Sunday, 20 June 2010 02:53 (thirteen years ago) link
there are hooks here and there! but they're refrains rapped by the rapper, maybe double tracked for emphasis like on "snow" but low key nonetheless. but prob if i drew up my fav tracks eva they'd be 90 per cent chanted hooks by the rapper, scratched in premo type hooks or one verse type joints tbh rather than guested singing.

this travis porter mixtape is the best non-gucci atl rap i've heard all year

if you guys get Fuse on cable, they've been showing Tragedy: The Story of Queensbridge, a documentary mostly about Trag but sort of how he was pretty much there for every evolution of QB in the background but never really blew up himself...
it's not the best documentary, kinda corny TV style, but man Tragedy's story is compelling...
lots of cool stuff how he used to see little Havoc on the street and tell him that he had to have a new rhyme every time he saw him or he'd cuff him
or basically hooking up Capone and Noreaga's whole career and mentoring nore as a rapper

J. Cole said he chose "Who Dat" to be his first single "because itβs really about the beat and the raps and not much more.
that's all i want, really.

J. Cole has the personality of a stick of celery.
― rennavate, Thursday, 24 June 2010 22:25 (thirteen years ago) link
And the beat's like a bad Timbo-circa-"Put You On the game" knockoff.
i think he's one of the most totally okay rappers on the scene today!

"Who Dat" is cool btw, even if I can't help feeling like it's one step above Sheek Louch or something. If I've been fronting on J. Cole, it's just because of the names I've seen him associated with. But if he is gonna just make solid B-grade wannabe NY rap, I can't hate.
― suge β (The Reverend), Sunday, 27 June 2010 06:43 (thirteen years ago) link
he reminds me more of lupe than a knucklehead east coast rapper
― incredible length (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 June 2010 06:44 (thirteen years ago) link
I guess I'm going more on the sound of it than the rapping. I've only heard it once tho.

met him today. super nice dude. his music is also 'nice'. i dunno hes not a hugely defined personality really. I can never really love these MOR-persona rappers
