forks - i haven't played this game, but it seems to me like basically every game in this genre has the problem of being too long, or having a weak finish (or alternatively, just too much fluff in the middle to get the to the end)*, but do you think there are other GTA/alike games that don't suffer from this problem?

*except maybe Saints Row 2 as you could tear through the story relatively fast if you wanted to, or maybe I liked the story missions in it more. San Andreas might have had the opposite problem, i think that game was generally strongest in the middle hours after long tutorial, but again it's a long way to the finale

Bully is pretty refined, imo.

ps has anyone joined the social club? i tried last night and it wouldn't work. thought it was maybe a browser problem.

think i must have signed up for gta. doesn't seem to offer much except some 'exclusive cheats', + stat viewing etc.

It's handy for keeping track of which locations it thinks you still haven't found.

only a couple there at the moment, they look fairly tough, e.g. for pike's basin:

* Kill 3 people in one Dead Eye burst
* Drag a gang member through the basin
* Kill all enemies while on horseback

only just figured out how to do duels after googling :/

you'd think that for the sharpshooter challenge for shooting two hats off people's heads, a penalty for accidentally killing oooooh five or so folk while trying might be a good idea.

* Kill 3 people in one Dead Eye burst

this seems pretty easy now that I have the 'paint the target' thing

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 17 June 2010 15:35 (thirteen years ago) link

it was more the horse thing tbh, although i suppose it would just be tedious, not difficult. especially tedious if they manage to kill yr horse too.

i killed five goats in one burst the other night and immediately got shot dead at by a Federale who i didn't notice was standing right next to me. don't fuck with Mexican goats!

when the game began i actually assumed there was going to be some kind of snake eater subsistence action going on.. i guess i haven't shaken it completely

Finally won my first multiplayer last night, tho it was a 2 vs 2 capture the bag. I didn't realise you can just whistle up a horse, so a couple of quick trips to get the bag sealed it, barely saw any of the opposition. Was kinda weird, I'm used to getting really crappy kill/death ratios. Sick of 2 vs 1 shootouts, would be nice to get into action with about 10 people or so. This is probably a time difference thing tho, I'm in NZ and only get to play at night here.

Bill E, Friday, 18 June 2010 00:00 (thirteen years ago) link

i was having plenty of 16 player action the other (uk) night. kd ratio slooooowly rising. might rise faster now i've figured out how to use dead-eye in multiplayer.

sent from my neural lace (ledge), Friday, 18 June 2010 08:31 (thirteen years ago) link

You can do that? How?

JimD, Friday, 18 June 2010 08:38 (thirteen years ago) link

it doesn't slow stuff down but it does the auto-target painting of dead-eye level 2. nb only read about it not tried it yet.

sent from my neural lace (ledge), Friday, 18 June 2010 08:45 (thirteen years ago) link

& it might need some control option fiddling since every time i've pressed the right stick previously i get a 'look behind' view instead.

sent from my neural lace (ledge), Friday, 18 June 2010 08:46 (thirteen years ago) link

um, i'm not sure of the point of it then? i guess i'll have to try it and see but if you're still just targeting in normal motion, why don't you just normal target and shoot instead?

go O and O (Ste), Friday, 18 June 2010 09:12 (thirteen years ago) link

oh sorry, does it auto paint?

go O and O (Ste), Friday, 18 June 2010 09:12 (thirteen years ago) link

p. sure it slows down your targets too

stofu (cozen), Friday, 18 June 2010 09:14 (thirteen years ago) link

how can it do that in multiplayer tho?

go O and O (Ste), Friday, 18 June 2010 09:16 (thirteen years ago) link

iunno the logistics but iirc it slows time as well as auto-paints

stofu (cozen), Friday, 18 June 2010 09:19 (thirteen years ago) link

autopaint, yeah. slowdown, u mad dogg.

sent from my neural lace (ledge), Friday, 18 June 2010 09:31 (thirteen years ago) link

ah seems ur right, I was just confused because it goes into that blurro vision

stofu (cozen), Friday, 18 June 2010 09:33 (thirteen years ago) link

While in Dead Eye, if you mark targets while having either Dynamite, Throwing Knives, or Fire Bottles equipped, the thrown object acts as a homing missile and continues flying until the target is hit.

stofu (cozen), Friday, 18 June 2010 09:35 (thirteen years ago) link

haha awesome!

gonna firebomb a coupla bros

Isn't that a bit shit in a Wild West game? Not asking for total realism here but come on it's not fucking Halo!

I roped a deer. Couldn't hogtie it tho. I hogtied the horse rapist and got a bounty on me head. I'm in Mexico now.

i didn't know you could lasso other animals other than horses

go O and O (Ste), Monday, 21 June 2010 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link

think the non-horse animals get stunned when you lasso them

mayor jingleberries, Monday, 21 June 2010 19:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Wonder if I can lasso a bear... fuckin bears. Had to kill 5 bighorns and elks, found a whole clutch of them all together, suddenly I was tackled by a bear, with no dead-eye, and no presence of mind to refill it without spazzing out over the start/select buttons too often. DEAD. Then after I got my elks and bighorns I had to kill a bear, rode around for 20 minutes before finding one, and then got set upon by wolves at the same time. DEAD.

also wtf are these wife and child story missions, damn this is like some lord of the rings triple ending bullshit.

i've sort of hit a wall with this - strangely, right after i got to blackwater, which i'd been anticipating all game

i was like "ooh, a real town!" but really it's just the same stuff - poker, a cinema, an empty bedroom, a general store selling the exact same stuff as the store in escuela

and the missions are the same - they might be introduced with different cutscenes and require you to do some bone-simple platforming but essentially it's "saddle up, ride for awhile, get off your horse and shoot some motherfuckers"

i think i really would appreciate even just a bump up in difficulty right about now to make up for the sameyness of it. weirdly, one of the first new austin gang hideouts was the toughest - where you have to blast your way through a mine to find the "funny man" and you have a yokel behind you who generously allows you to take the treasure once you find it (and then blows himself up? never figured that out. maybe he was trying to blow ME up). anyway, i died about six times trying to get through that goddamned mine but i remember every corner of it now and the sense of satisfaction when i finally beat the fucking thing was delicious.
