note that Quitely and Morrison did the entire booklet for that Bob W album, not just the cover

Just looked up Phantom Band out of curiosity and they're dull as only a Scottish indie band can be.

Quitely is Scottish too, isn't he? Maybe he knows the band personally or something.

I saw this cassette in a thrift store in high school and got it just because of the cover art. I had seen just a few Mark Beyer panels in a book about comics but I wanted to read his stuff so bad. This was the closest I could get. I bought it and it was responsible for getting me into Zorn and Coleman. Thanks Mark Beyer!

That's definitely Gibbons on the Kula Shaker, IIRC he did the singles as well.

Just remembered Phil Jimenez did a? some? Kula Shaker singles. Though I can't find anything on the interwebs that looks like either of them, bar the album, so maybe I still R incorrectly.

the elephants do, but the main motorcycle robot didn't, to me

I dunno, maybe not the design, but the detailed linework on the robot and motorcycle is very much Jimenez.

Confirmed here.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 00:24 (thirteen years ago) link

i was gonna say, the motorcycle looks Very Jimenez to me

Princess TamTam, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 00:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Never realised Gibbons did that Kula Shaker record, but it's so obvious in retrospect. Good grief.

Lol at this one:

Did McFarlane just give the band an unused piece of Spawn art, or did they specifically want Spawn to be on their album cover?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 08:20 (ten years ago) link

The Dark Saga is a concept album based on the Todd McFarlane comic book character Spawn

Use Your Illusion too obvious to mention I guess

Wikipedia says the cover was designed by someone called Mark Kostabi, can't find any info that he ever was a comic book artist?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 11:41 (ten years ago) link

think Nick prob means Appetite for Destruction, which had a Robert Williams painting on the cover, tho iirc the painting existed before the alb, so doesn't count under sic's 'no satriani' ruling

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 11:45 (ten years ago) link

oh shit yes, i totally meant app for destruction, fucking dingbat

^ Hunt Emerson also did this painting which probably falls foul of the sic clause, but he did these pictures that got used on various records too:

Dean Motter created Mister X when doing the art for a version of Patrick Cowley's Megatron Man LP.

Jim Woodring's first record cover was for the Christmas album Vortex.

Ed Brubaker did a cover for a San Diego band called Field Trip in around '91.

P Craig Russell has done several covers for the new music label Bridge Records, including a couple of stunners in their George Crumb series.

Pressgang Wolf (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 12 November 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link

Woodring did the critter on the front of El Oso by Soul Coughing, but not the design, I assume

crumb has done a ton of these.

Moebius did a shit ton too, tho mostly for European recording artists. (Hendrix outtakes album a notable exception)

A huge database...

Suehiro Maruo did lots of japanese punk albums, I think some John Zorn too. Awesome stuff.
http://www.kurutta.com/2009/04/suehiro-maruos-cd-covers.html

Danzig and Rob Zombie got a lot of comic artists to do their covers. Joe Chiodo, Simon Bisley, Gene Colan and more.

I'm sure that guy who does dinosaurs and movie concept art did a Who live album cover. Cant remember his name.
